Smells like NO spirit

hello hello hello hello hello...hehe Kurt Cobain sang that part the best. Bet most of you heard the song 'Smells like Teen Spirit' by Nirvana. To listen to this song go here and select #5. Smells like teen spirit. Tragic he died so young - that guy had talent. Whenever I listened to this song I used to wonder what exactly he (Kurt wrote that song) meant by the words. What exactly is teen spirit? No it isn't the deodorant 'Teen Spirit' that skyrocketed it's sales after this song became a hit :) I think teen spirit is about being youthful, stupid, happy, mischievous, rebellious, obedient and enjoying the best days of your life. Atleast that's what my teenage years were like.

Unfortunately most teenagers of today are not anywhere close to this. They are stressed out, over-worked, pressurred and setting themselves standards that's almost impossible to achieve nor maintain. Teen spirit is lost somewhere in this mess. I feel teenagers of today expect too much from life and are expected too much from as well. Where are the days when teenagers were just teenagers? Alot of unrest has been born that most teenagers these days don't seem to know what peace, respect, discipline and happiness are. Most crimes in Australia are carried out by teenagers (car jacking, home invasions, traffic offenses, suicides, murder, sex, drugs, alcohol, schoolyard crimes etc). I'm sure most of you would have heard of the Columbine tragedy and numerous other school shootings by teenagers. These things never happened few years ago and so why now? The only peer challenge we had back in school was being gossipped about or a little bit of teasing...not a mate with a gun in his hands about to shoot us down! I cant even imagine how I would feel in such a situation.

I think most familes don't realise that teenage years are the most important foundation years of a child. For it to be healthy and stable, and not to tarnish the natural teen spirit, I think parents need to spend a lot of time and effort on their teenage kids. Most don't bother 'cause they think teenage kids are 'mature' enough to handle things on their own. Some may be so but not all. You need to be there for your kids and make sure they become an asset to themselves as well as to the society, not a lost child that ends up committing a crime that's irreparable. I understand that certain circumstances put kids in dire sitautions, and that's exactly what should be prevented.

Reading the lyrics of the song again and again and seeing beyond what my naked eye could see, I realise that maybe Kurt had troubled teen years. Leaving aside the fact that he later became a very popular musician, maybe he too was a very unhappy teenager not being able to reach goals set by the family/society, not being accepted for what he was...not being 'loved' enough. There's some hidden rage in the lyrics...masked disappointment...some anger at the world/God. This suppressed rage could have grown over the years and finally lead to his suicide. I don't know, it's just a possibility 'cause no one really knows why he died. And really he didnt have to die - it was necessary for him, but an unnecassary loss to the music world.

Here are few lines from the song. I have chopped the repetition. Tell me what you gather from this (you may really have to listen to the tempo and his voice to understand his notions well) . And don't forget to tell me what your teenage years are/were like, who/what has the responsibilty to guide the teens and why so many teens have lost interest in goodwill these days.

~~Load up on guns...bring your friends...It’s fun to lose...and to pretend...She’s overboard...Myself assured...I know I know...A dirty word Hello (x 16)

With the lights out, it’s less dangerous...Here we are now...entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious..Here we are now...entertain us

A mulatto...An albino...A mosquito...My libido...Yea I’m worse at what I do best...And for this gift I feel blessed...

Our little group has always been...And always will until the end

And I forget...just what it takes...And yet I guess it makes me smile...I found it hard...it's hard to find...Oh well, whatever...~~

-Kurt Cobain

Oh innocent Rose bloom beautifully...don't let the gloom around you fade you before your time...

Keshi,

First of all a big Hi from a crazy Nirvana fan....You are true, By loosing Kurt qwe lost a gem...I think one of the best guitarist..phew!

And to the topic
You said~~ think most familes don't realise that teenage years are the most important foundation years of a child.~~

Let me differ to u over here...
Let me vent my perspective...ITs not teenage years that puts a foundation of our life or character...
Its before that..teenage is very tough to handle...If the basics put up during pre-teen years is strong, then teenage years wil be good...I meanIts a transition period..From childhood to adulthood..And i think its the dangerous period in ones life...So we need to care it doesnt go wrong...For tht we have to take care right in the childhood itself...Then and then only we will use our maturity in teenage years to guide our character throughout our life...

Anyways, wit my kids i will be more concentrating on building up character in their childhood..Because during teenage years we think on ourselves..So if basics went wrong it would be disastrous..

Wtever, indeed teenage years are fun if enjyed the right way..atleast in my case..hehe..am still a teen..

hello..hello.hello.helloo..
hmm...

Cheers..

**Its not teenage years that puts a foundation of our life or character...Its before that

ur right...I agree that childhood earlier than teenage is very imp. But when u grow into teens u thats when u develop real conscience - and also u get more freedom n that's where the extra guidance is needed...cos thats when u either stay or stray. But I know wut u mean...teenage years r the more 'dangerous' years than being the more 'important' years. Thanks for pointing that out...WELL DONE!

Ur kids r gonna be very lucky ;-)

As for d pressure..well rite now yes,i do have a lot of assingemnts n stuff to do,otherwise i dont study.I can easily top my clas, but coz i knw i can study 3hrs b4 d exam and b among d top,ive neva really tired to put in more den that to top.My rents r obviously aware of my potential and do encourage me to do better, coz they know i can.Otherwise they neva force me to do sumthin i aint capable of,nor do they have any such expectations.Rite now i dont think studies is d only thing,im doin dance n fashion shows and in less den 1 month i know almost my entire college..so nah i dun come under pressure to study.Luckily,my parents have never set unreasonable standarbs for either me or my brother.

Boy...I never had any fun during Teen age...
Damn, should have atlesat tried out Car jacking...that would have been so awesome. ME was busy working on Viruses and worm codings...life sux big times...I mean Teenage Spirit :)

I think parents need to spend a lot of time and effort on their teenage kids.
Teens already are in such an hyper state that they prefer not to take there parents serriously. I remember how I used to get mad when mom usd to bug me while I used to sit on comp for 12-14 hrs in strtch.

not being 'loved' enough.
Thts wht was told in that episode. He was troubled coz he didnt got the love he was searching for. No wonder dependency on drugs followed. But was that right?
Who knows?
Can we understand what state of mind he was going thru?
Maybe drugs was the only soltion that time.

Awesome one K00kiez
hugz to ya for this amazing post and take care
Have a nice day ahead....Greetz!!

I think ur spot on here! Yes most teens dun wanna talk abt 'it'...but I guess parents should notice changes...n maybe if not talking abt it then take em out somewhere different, spend more time doing things together etc...show the kids somehow that they r appreciated and loved...material things dont and cant replace love...

aww did they say that he wasnt loved enough in the episode? I dunno much abt why he shot himself after drugging himself heavily...his suicide note was very brief too...

I've found myself surprised by how different our experiences can be - of childhood, as well as the teenage years.

My childhood was so happy - not perfect or anything, but so fundamentally joyous - that it's hard for me to grasp the reality of what it must feel like for it to be any other way. But for many, it isn't a joyous time at all.

My teenage years were miserable, it was so great to get into my late twenties and recover the joy at an adult level. There seem to be many different patterns for the beginning of our lives. Maybe because so much is outside our control in our early years, and we get dealt such different things to start with.

Well I'm visiting a shrink since yday ..cos guess who just joined me...n000nie LOL!
lol..naughty k000kie!!!

now, back to the topic..
i think teens today are being burdened..surely i can't be speaking for the rest people here, but based on my own experience in my place..

in M'sia, we have 3 major communities living together..and Indians generally felt left out, the parents think that the only way we can bring up the new generation is through good education ,which is available in the cities..so, they move to the cities from the rural estate areas that have been their home for decades..staying in squatter areas with minimum facilities..

city life, as all know, is a challenge itself! many able to cope with the pressure and deliver the better life their parents hoping for, but some failed :(
This group of teens and young adults who couldnt cope with the demands of this supposely-good life, turn into other ways to get what they want-money that is! it is sad that although Indians belogs to a huge percentage of professionals in the country, the other extreme troubled teens and youngsters making up high percentages of criminals as well..

Whom to be blamed now? the parents who is hoping that their kids will be able to perform? the youngster who failed to realise the good and evil before its too late? the society which marginalize troubled teens until they become law-breakers? or the educators who failed to mould them to be someone?

Honestly, i don't have an answer..

All the talented people die young ...or may be it's only after they die people realise their talent..
famous examples ..Kurt, Elvis, Jimm morrison.
all of them died due to a combination of drugs and depression...
These guyz were definitely great and talented , but I think they abused whtever life gave them ...I don't deny that their name to fame was infact their dedication towards what they did and ofcourse the real talent in them...but I wonder if their end was still worth what they achieved ..

I like to clear some facts.
Firstly Cobain wasn't a tortured soul more than million of other kids in US at that time.It was a combination of a creative piscean mind and a planning scorp. ascendent(he was a pisces with a scorp rising, astrologically speaking) that made him a star.
The 'smells like teen spirit' WAS infact an ode to his former gf.When she dumped Kurt, that time an aspiring musician,he would go to her house and spray paint her walls with "You smell like Teen Spirit"(the deo, which was awfully smelling).
Now what vinu said about Cobain being a great guitarist, well we wasn't.Infact the only thing he did farily well was with the distortions. All his tunes were pretty same but yeah he had the 'thing' in him.
And to The Gome..well,the conspiracy theories about that Courtney Love killed him,but they are doubtful. He might have been murdered or he might have killed himself, but one things for sure, his death made Nirvana immortal. His living might have faded 'em into oblivion.

And for the record, the real talent in Nirvana was the drummer Dave Grohl.I had the luck to meet him in Aus in 97,when I was a teenager and he could play the guitar better than myself. He being a drummer and I the guitarist. That deflated my overinfalted ego and put me to my place.

Oh and before i forget..I love Nirvana.

I had a tough time being the gurl I am...I love rock music, short skirts, cute boys ;-), fashion, dancing, going out etc...even tho I was academically at the top too my parents didnt much allow me to enjoy the other side I wanted to tread...in that way I felt trapped many a times...my dad was very very strict...so yeah I studied hard and became wut I am today...I'm happy but sometimes I feel I should have tried this n that...but na neva will I blame my parents for that...cos I believe even if parents r strict, if u have the will to do something u will do it anyways...just that I didnt.

Lets talk about “parenting”.

In my humble opinion, not all parents are good, in a matter of fact, lot of parents are not good.

Not good as in :-

1. Lack of understanding on becoming responsible couples
2. Too busy for daily work
3. Couldn’t care less about their kids
4. etc

I agree with you. Parents should spend more time with teenagers and the they should trying to understand them rather than finding faults.

There is the sicko called ITCC/AMAR/XYZ/Anonym-ass who goes around leaving comments as KESHI...which is why I got a nasty comment by you Jerk_of_all_trades...cos ITCC went there and left a nasty comment under my name so you backfired...called me all the nasty names on Earth.

It's ok...cos people get upset when they see such things. And u really dont know who left it.

Anyways...
I didnt leave that insulting comment in ur blog. As u can see it doesnt have my profile pic next to it (the loser might get that too but can I stop that?? No.). It is totally up to u to believe whatever you want. Call me wuteva u want but ur doing a big mistake.

I've myself read a lot of such things written about you...and it makes me mad when read such things...

infact, take for eg...today morning someone used PARI's ID and something crap on one blog....I was so upset...until she made things clear that it was not her.

Few people I believe are born with no one to love them...or maybe there parents are divorced and if they are having kids, they are turned GAY. All this has created frustration in there head and the only way they can make themselves smile is my commenting shit about GOOOD people like you.

So whenver I read something written about you on anyones blog...I laugh and say to myself,

Geeez....This guys is desperately in need of someone to teach him wht luv is....I so wish his parents were alive...his kids were not GAY...so that he gives up being Anonym-ass :D

Im doing good here K000kie-piez...but not good to hear that my visit to Singapore has beeen almost cancelled coz Im stuck here in Delhi project. Will be talking to my boss later in eve and get more updates on it :D

You enjoy life...and gimme smile back. Dont you think...famous people have these Anonym-asses runnning behind. Feel good that you are CELEBRITY...there will always be people talking crap about you. Just ignore them....

Hugzzzzz to cheer you up:):)

Keshi,

I did not know that you had a "fake" you out there, nor did I care. I thought the comments were funny.
I came here and read some of your blog and thought it was cool, I was joking with you. I really did link your blog because I liked it.

Also, here in the U.S. "Bitch" is kind of a weird joke. It is an insult, but it's mostly used to discribe a very strong & confident woman who doesn't take any crap from anyone.

I did not mean it as an insult.

I was not insulted by you or whoever this ass is that's using your name.

It was all in good fun, but if you'd like I won't link your or ever come back here.

Sorry about the mix up.

Have a GREAT life and stay safe. :)

good questions on cobain that raise bigger questions about youth/art/culture/meaning. I use a biography of cobain in my juv delinquency class that might (or might not) interest you: Heavier than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain by Charles R. Cross, 2001. A pretty sensitive portrait and a good teen spirit story

More things change more they stay the same.....Words that will forever ring true. Read journals in family magzines from the 50, 60, 70's and so on one can see a trend."What is going on to teens these days, now back in my day...." I am well past my teen years but I still remeber them like they were yesterday. All the probelms of today were there, just in different forms. When I was a teen tattos were making a huge come back and all the old ppl where up in arms. Then it was the outragous peircings, the strange dressing habits, laziness, uselessness, disrespectfulness and soo on. Rebelion in teens to fight the "man" has been and always will be with us. It just changes with the times. Back in the day it was beer and pot, now its meth and herion. I dont like it but it part of the times and it to will change in a fw years. We went from Elvis shaking his hips on TV to Janets nipple. Pushing the envolope is just part of what we as humans do.

Keshi said...

Honkeie I really like ur views..they r very open and makes alot of sense. Thanks ur an asset to all my blogmates :)

**All the probelms of today were there, just in different forms

thats so true. as time goes the forms of problems change with the technology and attitudes of ppl changing too...I guess the blame for more violence these days is mainly becos of too much exposure to almost anything ard...

Thanks!

here is something interesting...

At the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards Kurt had this well publicized encounter with Axl Rose [of Guns N' Roses]. After Nirvana played "Lithium", Kurt went below the stage, where Axl and Elton John's two pianos were mounted on a hydraulic lift awaiting their duet. Kurt spit up some pretty nasty stuff upon the keys of what he thought was Axl's piano, but when the pianos arose for the duet's intro to "November Rain", Elton was seated at the piano who's keys Kurt had spat upon.

Keshi said...

ooops I didnt know that side of Kurt...wow interesting story Gaurav...any idea why he did that to Axl?

Keshi.

Gaurav said...

Apparently rumours are that Axle was dating Courtney love .. who was kurt's girl friend/wife... but no one has admitted that...it could be untrue becoz in the 1992 mtv music awards Axle called courtney "Kurts Bitch!"

It more of a personal hatred between the two ..Kurt is an antithesis of Axle.. but I think Axle was primarily and A$$, it was only becoz of him
G n' R died.

Keshi said...

oh so it was a love triangle :) Well u know I honestly dunno why Kurt fell for someone like Courtney. Axl on the other hand is a real a$$ (playboy wuteva :) like u said so yeah I can u'stand him going out with a crazy punk girl...but Kurt is too innocent...and he always stood up for what's right...and he falling for a someone like Courtney was unbelievable...I sometimes think that Kurt's life fell apart after marrying her...
