Capital thoughts

What do you think is the most serious crime that anyone can ever commit? Murder? Drug dealing? Heinous assault? Terrorism? I know these crimes are serious but does any of that deserve death? If we, the so-called rational society believe that they are senseless crimes, then why do we so senselessly follow in the criminals' footsteps and commit another crime by executing capital punishment, even in this civilised era? While I don't condone or justify any of the crimes mentioned above, I find it difficult to understand how you could punish a person by killing him. He wouldn't be there to know that he's dead, would he? Only that he would suffer in his last few days before death and that's about it! And others might not attempt such a crime in fear of death penalty, but does that really reduce crime and worse teach the perpetrator anything at all?

While I know that if one of my loved-ones got murdered, I'd want the murderer to be punished but I wouldn't like to see him dead and gone so quickly. 'Cos that's not closure to me. I would like to see him suffer every second of the rest of his life locked up in a dirty prison (no TV, music nothing) with just loads of hard work to do, and with just bread and water as food. Maybe in a special prison in Nicobar Islands, not in the US or Aus etc. 'Cos that's what I believe real punishment is, not death. They need to breathe their punishments, feel the seriousness of the crimes they committed, repent it, not just die in seconds. And for those who say they don't want their taxes looking after prisoners for life, please know the facts before you speak...death penalty costs millions, even just to maintain the law - read
here. Besides I believe in human rights and I have been a strong opponent of death penalty ever since I heard of it when I was little. No one has the right to take another man's life, no matter what. How can the law allow this? If Death Penalty is the right punishment for serious crimes, then I would say there are plenty of real criminals (murderers or not) unfairly breathing around in this world!

A young Aussie drug dealer got caught in Singapore and will face death by hanging, on the 2nd of Dec...read
here. It's not because he is Aussie that I brought this topic up - I felt for Timothy McVeigh too (even though he was the unforgivable Oklahoma bomber), and always for each and every other death-row prisoner around the world. While they deserve to be punished severely for their crimes, death in no way is going to make them realise what they did and it's the most violent act one could ever commit! It breaks that same law that the law authorities are preaching! It's ridiculous to carry on such a cruel and uncivilised punishment and I really feel for these people and their families. I'm glad Australia isn't that primitive and evil. We respect life and human rights.

To those who believe in death penalty:

NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO TAKE ANOTHER'S LIFE EVEN IF IT'S A CRIMINAL'S. IF YOU SUPPORT DEATH PENALTY, YOU GOT BLOOD IN YOUR HANDS...THEN YOU TOO DESERVE THAT SAME DEATH PENALTY YOU YOURSELF RESPECT - WHY SHOULD IT BE ANY DIFFERENT TO YOU? WAKE UP ALL THOSE COUNTRIES THAT DOTE ON DEATH PENALTY! IT'S A DISGRACE TO HUMAN RACE AND THE QUALITY OF JUSTICE. NOT EACH AND EVERYONE IS BORN WITH THE SAME INTELLIGENCE AND CONSCIENCE...LET EVERYONE TAKE THEIR OWN PACE TO REPENT AND LEARN...BY KILLING THEM THEY WON'T GET A CHANCE TO EVEN BEGIN TO REPENT. SAY NO TO DEATH AND SAY YES TO LIFE...

I think a big issue is that you can never be 100% sure if someone is guilty. I mean you give a guilty verdict in criminal trials "beyond all reasonable doubt." But i mean 'all reasonable doubt'.. that doesnt really imply 100% certaintiy.

I strongly recommend seeing 'The Life of David Gale.' Its about an 'anti capital punishment' group who try to prove a person that has been executed were not guilty. The ending is pure brilliance.

Nonetheless, regardless of this, I think capital punishment is plain wrong. I dont see how a government can justtify killing. I mean it is actually murder in itself.

I dont think capital punishment is justified in any crime. I'de be more inclinded to crimes like genocide, but not drug trafking of even murder in the first. Even if the guilty had full intent, it maybe the first time they did it, they may fully regret what they did, and pose no threat at all to society.

And what happened to good old forgiveness, everybody deserves a chance for redemption. Maybe not put them back into the public but at least rehab or therapy or something.

And its not even an effective deterrent?! All the states in America that use it have seen an increase in murder and violence crimes after the implementation of capital punishment so go figure why you would use it.

Keshi said...

Hey NV let me first hug ya - hugggggggggz! :) I so missed ya..:(

U have some very interesting thoughts there...indeed 'all reasonable doubt' does not imply 100% certainity! So, proving someone guilty in itself isnt' 100% guilt-free :)

No I havent seen that movie..I think it's gonna be my next blockbuster rental..hehe...would it be available there?

**I'de be more inclinded to crimes like genocide,

Spot on! that's what I meant abt the real breathing free...look at how much time Saddam Hussein is getting in courts when we all know he's responsible for all those mass graves...and many more to mention...but even then I dont think death penalty is the way to punish them...

Like u said, some ppl might commit a crime in the spur of the moment, losing their minds...but yeah they too need to learn from it, hence they need a chance to repent and become a better person. Forgiveness seems to be just a fancy word in some ppl's vocabulary...it aint implemented.

yes...the states of US that carry on this cruelty needs a break...maybe try a different solution to crime...like let them live and deprive them of all freedom...thats the real punishment...everyone will fear that more than death.

Thanks matey...very wise and noble thoughts..

Yeah I read, I was very disappointed mate, I wanted Emily to win....urgh and I wasted my 25 cents on voting for her.

Keshi said...

lol u voted too...aww...well I was thinking that Emily might win too...but on the last day they performed as competitors, Kate was just too good...Emily screwed it with Britney's Baby please..it didnt even suit her...besides trust me, Aussies love a true blue aussie gal compared to an exotic gal...Im sure votes were not purely based on talent...a unfair as it may be, that's the harsh truth..

But I reckon both Kate and Emily will have a good future in singing...look at Shannon and Anthony...they rock, even better than Guy and Casey...:)

Revenge is short-lived, really.

The only time I could take someone else's life is in pure self-defense. Especially if someone was trying to hurt my children.

I wouldn't think about it, if in that kind of situation. I would kill, but only to protect myself and my kids.

Drywall Mom said...

I am for the death penalty. Let's just say that there was someone that raped, tortured and mutalated hundreds of people and left people w/o their loved ones, that person has it coming. That person has stolen the life out of people and should have the deserving right to enjoy life, even if in prison for the rest of his life. Then there are other ways of making living in prison worse than death. Like the child molesters, those people are going to be hating prison life when the other prisoners get ahold of them. But I do think that there are certain cases where death would be a suitable punishment.

Abigail S. said...

I don't believe in the death penalty persay. But if I had kids and someone sexually assaulted them... I might beat the courts to it.
I am in no way a violent person... But something like that would make me lose it.
Oh- and "the Life of David Gale" IS an awesome movie!

Keshi said...

Hey Phoenix!

Revenge sure is short-lived :)

**The only time I could take someone else's life is in pure self-defense.

I agree...I mean we may commit violent crimes at the spur of the moment, in self-defense, but d u think u deserve death penalty for that?

Hellooo Drywall :)

I agree with ya there...there could be some deranged maniac raoing and torturing ppl and it would seem right to kill him...but is that really a deterrent to crime? Would it make him repent it?

Hey Abigail WC to my blog!

Yes I know what u mean...if it happens to someone we love, even the most non-violent person would feel violent thoughts...but does that solve the problem? Would it make him/her repent? Is that a deterrent?

Since both U and NV recommended that movie, I think I better hunt for it now :) Thanks!

could not agree with you more. death penalty is inhuman and is nothing but murder for the benefit of society(or for no reason at all). any member of society that has the practice is guilty of murder.
though i am not sure that australia is not 'primitive and evil', :-), in this instance at least they are doing the right thing .
nothing justifies taking another human being's life.

ppl change, criminals also undergo this change. is it correct to kill someone for something that they did in the past and will never do again? how does society benefit from that?

and let us remember that even with all those safeguards that protect the defendant in u.s.a. many ppl who are awaiting death sometimes are found to be totally innocent bc of new evidence and released. that is because judicial process is controlled by humans and humans from policeman, judges, lawyers, and juries are known to make mistakes.

but even with the perfect judicial process or even if the criminal never shows any remorse, capital punishment is never justified.

----

btw bc of election and rain and all the excitement here i was not able to fully read your new posts about givers and takers( i am both), and dancing (i am hopeless at dancing but you almost inspired me to try some steps :-)) until today. i can only say i should not have missed reading them immediately.

Hmmm...interesting post!!!
Convicting somebody for a capital punishment is not so easy like it looks, there are many factors which are considered before the conviction. And in most of the countries when someone is caught in a narcotic case, usually they have to face the life sentence or the death penalty, the reasons for implimenting the rules are also quite justified if u want i can give u an elaborated explaination and justification on that and i am sure when u go through that u wont have the same opinion what u have right now.
Good day keshi!!!

I totally agree with ya...how does society benefit from death penalty! Great Q for thos edeath penalty supporters to answer..any takers? :)

Yes there's human error in every situation...but like u say, even if the criminal is 100% guilty, death penalty adds to the crime...

btw Aus is not primitive ok...lol!And hey hows SL doing after the elections? All calm or tensed? Great that u got motivated to try some dancing steps...hehe...u gottta give some to get some..I mean dance a little to get some excitement into ur life :) THANKS mate!

All in all, we are not suppose to judge each other!
I don't believe death is the answer, however, our prisions are such a mess, is prision the punishment it was meant 2 b?
Prisions seem 2 have it all anymore. Cable TV, heat, hot water, obtain a degree, etc....
Not the prision they were in the 1900's. If you were homeless in the winter,-prision probably sounds like a good choice. We can't afford Cable TV, but our prisioners get 2 watch it!
Just doesn't make alot of Sense!

Let's see....I am of the opinion that that Nyguen guy deserves it.
I am balancing the fact that if he wasn't caught, the haul of drugs on him will make their way to other drug dealers and eventually to addicts.
Sure, hanging him doesn't solve the problem, as he is only a runner, not the big boss.
BUT why should lives of drug addicts be any less precious than his?
If he knowingly brings drugs through a country with strict penalties, he should be prepared to bear the consequences.
The death penalty may not be a sufficient deterrent to would-be criminals.
Yet the bottomline is, the authorities are answerable more to their voters than citizens from other countries. They have every right and obligation to protect their citizens and prevent illegal acts from using their countries as a conduit.

i know we say they deserve this... they have killed n raped n wat not... but i think they should b kept in prisons rather than killing them in one go...

i prefer "killing them softly"... this way they get to repent n know wat they have done is absolutely wrong...

Gosh, Keshi, heavy topic and a post that is bound to get a record number of comments.

Seen black and white, I'm most definitely against the death penalty. Once one starts looking into different scenarios, the grey areas so to speak, it becomes a little harder to maintain that clearcut, 100% certain opinion. If someone did something to Maria for example, what would I feel then(?). In as far as I can, I imagine, I would still be against, but I wouldn't know, unless in such a situation. I don't think, one can blame the families of victims for wanting this kind of retribution, regardless of whether one considers it inhumane, even evil.

Re: the drug dealer up for execution in S'pore, I can add that I've travelled into this country numerous times and there are warnings upon warnings upon warnings long before one ever arrives that being caught with drugs is punishable by death - is it right, no, but he knew the risks.

Hi Keshi,
I think you hit on a major point, the death penalty has not deterred crime. I don't think it's for anyone else to determine when another's life should end, regardless. Of course they should be punished, and some serverly and never released. (I might have a whole different opinion if something happened to a loved on of mine.)But for now, that's where I stand.
And I really dig your blog!

I dont agree .....the kind of crimes committed here....children being raped n killed helpless women being burnt for dowry....i any case there is no fear of punishment u do away with death penalty and crimes wud increase manifold.....its not only to punish rememmber its also exmplary....i wud rather have much stringent laws....one guy i know killed some one he managed to get out on bail..a yr later he killed some one else....so how cud we let such ppl continue to hunt.....in Saudi Arabia...crimes are much less only due to brutal punishment handed out to guilty...........any way keshi if u cud stop dancing for a sec ..need a hug : )

Hi kesh...
Hmmm, raging topic.. I feel like talkin for both sides!
What you say is very true, capital punishment is not the way out.. But if making ppl realise their mistakes, and getting them back to lead a good life, is your motive - it will not work out in most cases! Your solution would be ideal, if the offender committed the 'crime' by mistake, or if he/she is not an all time criminal or anything like that!
Imagine if veerapan was caught. He wud be prisoned, and no amount of counselling wud make him change himself one bit, right!! The moment he gets released, even if it was 20 yrs later, he wud head straight for the nearest elephant camp! In such cases, there is no option but to put an end to such personalities... Its not an option keshi, its the only way out. Hence for such cases, capital punishment shud be allowed.. Not bcos its right, or cos we have the right to kill someone else... But bcos there simply is NO OTHER WAY OUT :)

johnny boy said...
This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
johnny boy said...

There is another big factor - aginst your solution for the criminals... If putting them in jails, torturing them and making them serve long term, is the punishment to be implemented - then there is a huge pre-requisite for this.. There shud be absolutely no corruption in the police/goverment departments! Imagine... If a big time criminal is lodged in prison for long, it wud only be a matter of time b4 the cash comes out. And talkin abt countries like ours, do we need to say more? Its too huge a risk, to be taking...
Such criminals if they manage to get out again, they might account for many more lives, and this risk is simply not worth taking! Once again, whts the only solution in such cases? Capital punishment..
We are talking abt saving the life of a criminal from capital punishment, right? Well if that very act, can put many innocent lives in danger, its not the way out dear.. We shud do anything and everything to save an innocent life!! Its too precious. No one deserves to die, for no fault of theirs!! Its tooo big a risk.
If we narrow it down, it all leads to one thing - eliminate corruption, and we can maybe think of implementing what u suggested :) In fact if u eliminate corruption, the number of criminals wud reduce by half :D lolzz
u take care and have a fun day!!

Hello Keshi,

When I was much younger, I used to think that the death penalty was warranted for certain crimes. I think I was conditioned that way by school, government, community, I'm not sure. It seemed logical. But I have come to believe differently now. My feeling is that the only one with the complete authority to give or take life is God. We as the human race do it anyway, and as someone else mentioned, all sin is sin. But we can't justify it. In the event of some awful threat to my loved ones, yes, I would have no trouble shooting the offender during the course of defending myself. I pray I'm never challenged like that. I also feel that nursing a grudge or hatred is like feeding poison to someone else, and then waiting to die. Revenge is death. Forgiveness is life.

**But if making ppl realise their mistakes, and getting them back to lead a good life, is your motive - it will not work out in most cases!

Nope thats not my motive..lol...I meant punishing serious criminals for life...making them repent and dying a slow death than just by a bullet or a rope.

** Imagine if veerapan was caught.. ...The moment he gets released, even if it was 20 yrs later, he wud head straight for the nearest elephant camp! In such cases, there is no option but to put an end to such personalities...

No I didnt say they should be released :)

**Its not an option keshi, its the only way out.

NOPE there is an OPTION! Let them rot in prison...isnt that a worse punishment than quick death?

**Not bcos its right, or cos we have the right to kill someone else... But bcos there simply is NO OTHER WAY OUT :)

Disagree :) The law allows it because they think it's RIGHT, and they think they have the RIGHT to kill someone, and also becos there is another way out that they just can't be bothered to use :) dun u think so?

**then there is a huge pre-requisite for this.. There shud be absolutely no corruption in the police/goverment departments!

rather than fixing corruption in police and govts, it is just easier to kill isnt it? how sad and pathetic we have become!!

**We shud do anything and everything to save an innocent life!!

surely we cant nurture a plant by pulling out few bad leaves without curing the roots, can we? :)

**eliminate corruption, and we can maybe think of implementing what u suggested..

Im glad u brought this point up...it's exactly what we should do :) thanks matey!

With South's permission I post his latest post in response to this post.

Thanks South!

---------------------------------

Finally something interesting did caught my attention!!!

This is in regards to keshi's post on capital punishment!!!

Keshi, i read ur post and also the comments of few of ur regular visitors, it was good to see the views of beautifulll people like u who are so kind hearted and think in that way. But like i mentioned in my comment a capital punishment is not convicted just like that, there are amny other facts behind such a punishment. Look at the countries which follow this rule and also look at the recent history they had in terms of crime specially narcotics and terrorism.

Lets talk about narcotics, do u have any idea how much money is generated in the narcotics trade, its enough to buy out nations if u accumilate the sum of a normal mafia or a cartel!!! Where is that money used once its generated? Its invested in the most profitable business on earth today...CORRUPTION. And the next profitable business is the business of TERRORISM. There are many more....If i keep mentioning them i'll have to keep typing for the next 20 days atleast.....
Anyways the next question is why should a small time offender be punished so heavily or should i say be convicted for his life, well even if he sells or supplies a kg of narcotics in a month, practically he has screwed lives of approximately 10 adult people and i feel if someone has practically screwed 10 lives there is no harm in taking his life for the betterment of the society in future and also make an example for the aspiring pimps....If this simple explaination is not enough i can provide u official figures and data as well.

Overall even a small time offender is responsible for spoiling the future of any society and the country and he who does that should be punished for it.
After reading this u all might say who's responsible for all this, the answer is WE, coz we all are responsible in some capacity in the betterment of the business called CORRUPTION....Do not take any personal offenses coz it was absolutely my own view based on the real life case studies of 1000s of cases and 6 years of service in the narcotics dept.

Thank you very much, all of u have a nice day!!!

Keshi said...

And this is my comment to South :)

South thanks for that detailed explanation and thanks for coming back :)

I know what u mean...and it's not just cos Im kind hehehe..it's also not cos I dont u'stand the seriousness and the consequences of crimes such as narcotics and terrorism. But no matter how much justification death penlaty carries (not forgetting the millions it costs too:), do you honestly think it's a detterent? And by killing would he/she even repent it? Isnt slow death for the rest of his/her life a worse and more deserving punishment than instant death? That's my point...

With ur permission I will post both ur's and my comments in my post..thanks!

Keshi.

This is a very big issue Keshi and I have thought about this be4 and I think a person who has commited the most heinous crime and has been found guilty and doesnt repent for his crime.. needs to be punished severely.. depending on the circumstances and the crime I think capital punishment becomes neccessary cos we dont need these guys in the society. Well I know taking a life out doesnt cross out the crime but still.. I think it is neccessary.. a kinda neccessary evil u can say.. very contentious issue...

Jim said...

Rohit,

about southpaw's argument that drug trade and corruption, i will ask, can you prove that death penalty has any effect on the spread of drug use or corruption? answer is no. in fact death penalty has no effect on any crime. things like economy, demographic, and culture has the greatest effect on whether a country has a high crime rate or not.

to ppl arguing that heinous criminals should be killed bc we do not need them in society, aren't you in effect arguing that ppl should die so that we can live in peace. what is the difference between that and a murderer who thinks that he can kill so as to say get rich and live in peace?

to ppl arguing that heinous criminals should be killed bc we do not need them in society, aren't you in effect arguing that ppl should die so that we can live in peace. what is the difference between that and a murderer who thinks that he can kill so as to say get rich and live in peace?*** There is a huge difference my friend, its very easy for a person who has born independent and has no direct impact of such things in life to take that independence and the peace taken for granted. When u start dealing with such things first hand all the perceptions change in a flick of a second. Nobody likes the jungle rule or the live for a live rule, but there is a very old saying,"you must always reply in the language u were questioned" When the war is taken to their backyard, things do change and change in a big way, what u may see in the society and the figures u may read in news and the pictures u see are not always true. If every one of us would sit in a corner just coz we cant be hideous like them then u can't imagine where the society will go.

Keshi said...

Vivhyd heyy!

Well if u think capital punishment does not cross out the crime (it only doubles it actually), how can u say it's necessary and righteous to implement it? :):)

Sittingnut hello :)

**can you prove that death penalty has any effect on the spread of drug use or corruption?

exactly my point!

**to ppl arguing that heinous criminals should be killed bc we do not need them in society, aren't you in effect arguing that ppl should die so that we can live in peace.

wow words of sheer brilliance! Thanks Sittingnut...u completed my Qs to ppl who support it. Any takers now? :):)

And hey thanks for those words abt my uncles...yes so they r considered colatteral damage..hehe..

Uttara huggggggggggz!

**i dont agree with the point which u have made for once :)

good friends have to agree to disagree too o.w. it's too boring and unreal :)

**how they can be sooooooo cruel .. but then they shud be punished .. else they will get a bail n rule the world ..so we r giving them the chance to rule also ..

nope...not if we punish them for life in prison. Killing them wont assure us there's not gonna be new ones...does it?

**crime may may small or big ..but then crime is a crime u see

sure is...so is death peanlty a crime and all those who support it and execute it have blood in their hands...:)

**n now wen i saw the movie .. its scaring .. so do u think we can allow others to take our lives .. n wen we know who they r ???

no ways we cant allow them to do that! But by killing the criminals we r becoming criminals too, arent we? more than a movie that depicts the inhuman underworld, what's more scary to me is us the so-called civilised ppl preparing the gurney or a rope to kill another human being...then what's the difference between us and them? Like Sittingnut stated, just like the criminal killed for his peace of mind, we r also killing for our peace of mind...isnt that so? :)

Keshi.

Keshi said...

South I know what u mean...but what Sittingnut and I r trying to say is if we kill just becos he/she killed, then what's the difference between us and them?

Isnt lifetime prison a more cruel punishment than instant death?***not always...like i hv said atleast more than a couple of times that there are many things taken into consideration before convicting somebody for a death sentence.

but what Sittingnut and I r trying to say is if we kill just becos he/she killed, then what's the difference between us and them?***i think i have already given an explaination on that. Do not take any personal offenses but its very easy to debate on such things but the perceptions change when u deal them first hand. No enforcement ageny would like to take lives just like that after all a country's image is associated with that, but its like when u got to do, u hv to do....

Death... I feel is an easy way to escape from ur "crime" For most of us, death is the last phase in our lives...

So instead of punishing a person by giving him a death sentence, the best would be to make him suffer. Each and every second I would want to see him suffer... Pay for the crime he did... For the pain he caused... I'm sure the crime he committed cannot be reversed, but at least a small mental satisfaction would be there for me.

Quite a sensitive topic... but got my gray cells thinking :)

Have a good day Keshi..

Keshu, i do concur that capital punishment is a heinous act. How do we qualify to kill human life.
I had thought even from the spiritual aspect. Are we given the authority to kill someone. But on a practical note,

What @ abortions? Arent we killing life here?
What @ killing animals, or we can kill them but we shudnt hang humans.
We have fought wars for centuries killing innocent ppl.

Now,
If a person alive can be a threat to the society, better kill him and save the rest. You imprison a terrorist and his troops wud kidnap someone even hijack a plane and wud demand his acquittal in return.

I second what Strawy said. Now, ur reply to her 'stopping the crime', well, give everyone everything he/she desires. That's the only way to stop crime. But then it is not practical, right? and the desires just keep growing. The laws r enacted so that ppl are feared to commit a crime. Laws cant change psyche of ppl. And we cant risk lives of innocent ppl just to save some insane souls and teach them moral lesson, NO WAY !! How wud u justify it to those who lost their lives in this process.

For the others, i wud say give them chance to repent, to feel the gravity of their crimes, and to come back into life later.

Why should taxpayers' $$ be spent on the upkeep of murderers/drug traffickers? As a taxpayer, I'd rather my $$ goes towards putting children in school or buidling better infrastucture, not building maximun-security prisons to keep dangerous people away from society.
And I do wonder, is it more humane to end his life or to keep him behing bars for the rest of his life, bearing in mind he is only 25 yrs old!
Is losing freedom a more platable option than not knowing what losing freedom means?
*My little 2 cents worth*

Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth!

Serve the LORD with gladness!
Come into his presence with singing!

Know that the LORD, he is God!
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise!
Give thanks to him; bless his name!

For the LORD is good;
his steadfast love endures forever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.

the life of man is to be protected, whether from animals (9:5a) or other men (9:5b). Life is a direct from God (2:7-9), was divinely imparted (2:7), and divinely maintained (2:9). The importance of the life of man, made in God’s image, emphasizes the importance of protecting that life! Some would argue that capital punishment for a murderer "cheapens" human dignity. In reality, it accentuates human dignity! When one person murders another, he is murdering one made in God’s image. Some would argue this is a form of "Deicide" along with "homicide." Life is so valuable, that if you dare break the command of God regarding the sanctity of life, your own life would be required. This is the essence of Gen. 9:6.

2. Exodus 21:12-14 commands capital punishment for premeditated murder.

3. Exodus 21:22-23 commands capital punishment for harming a pregnant woman or her unborn baby.

Note that there are other instances that God commanded capital punishment in the Scriptures, such as kidnapping (Exo. 21:16), adultery (Lev. 20:10), cursing father or mother (Lev. 21:17), offering human sacrifices (Lev. 20:2), rape (Deut. 22:23-27), and even rebellion in a son (Deut. 21:18-21) among many other examples. We would argue today that murder seems to be the crime which would demand capital punishment, and perhaps even in the Old Testament. Kaiser states, "Only for the first crime, premeditated murder, was there a ‘ransom’ or a substitute payment unacceptable (Num. 35:31) but presumably all other capital crimes could be committed as the judges determined. The death penalty marks the seriousness of these errors."1 Though this may be arguable, there has been no documentation that any rebellious son was stoned in the ancient writings that have been found. David was not put to death for adultery (2 Sam. 11:4, though he certainly should have been for murder!), nor was Solomon for worshipping Molech, which likely included child sacrifices (Lev. 20:2, 1 Kings 11:7). Thus I would at least argue that not all of the capital crimes listed demanded death. The crime of "murder," the Heb. radzah, however, had no exceptions.

B. In the New Testament

1. Romans 13:3-5, which defines the purposes of government

a. to protect the good,
b. to punish evil-doers, v. 4 The bearing of the sword seems to validate that capital punishment was still the command. Though there are some that would argue that the sword is merely a symbol of authority, there is no scriptural warrant for that interpretation. He bears the sword – for a purpose!

2. Acts 25:10-11 teaches that:

a. some crimes are worthy of death, v. 11
b. the government has the right to issue the punishment, v. 10
c. the guilty have no right to protest the death penalty, 11

3. John 19:11, Jesus Christ illustrates that:

a. He did not oppose capital punishment in His case
b. He did not oppose capital punishment in His teaching
c. He never said that the government has no right to exercise capital punishment

II. THE SECULAR ARGUMENTS OPPOSING CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
A. Social Argument: "Capital punishment does not restrain crime."
Response: It does deter crime! It prevents the murderer from committing other crimes, and deters other criminals. Studies have shown that every execution of a convicted murderer deters 156 murderers.2

B. Penal Argument: "Capital punishment does not rehabilitate the criminal."
Response: Capital punishment is not designed to be rehabilitative, but retributive. There is a difference between chastisement and justice.

C. Moral Argument: "Capital punishment does not reflect love."
Response: God is not only love, but light, love, life, truth, and just. Love does not automatically dissolve wrong-doing. Love may be geared toward the greater good – the people that will not be victimized by the perpetrator in the future.

D. Pacifist Argument: "Capital punishment does not rectify evil. Two wrongs don’t make a right."
Response: Governments are appointed to be God’s instruments of justice. Crime demands punishment at all levels. What God calls right we must not call wrong. And again, it is retributive, not corrective.

E. Spiritual Argument: "Capital punishment could snatch sinners out of heaven before salvation. Our efforts should be on salvation, not condemnation."
Response: There is plenty of time for repentance between sentencing and execution. There is not proof that more time will cause man to be saved. A most important fact to remember – GOD IS SOVEREIGN!!

Summary: Kaiser summarizes it well, "It was because humans are made in the image of God that capital punishment for first degree murder became a perpetual obligation. To kill a person was tantamount to killing God in effigy. That murderer’s life was owed to God, not to society …"3

It is important to see that capital punishment for the crime of murder was commanded in Genesis 9, is practiced in the Old Testament, maintained in the New Testament, and was never rescinded. Thus, it is still compelling! It is also important to note that all human life taking was not wrong – e. g. besides capital punishment, wars may be justified (Gen. 14, Josh. 6), as is self defense (Exo. 22:2, Luke 22:36).

I believe in justice. So whatever punishment it takes to be fair and just, Id support it, as long as the judges are not bias

you can think so. but i believe just that!! revenge is quite a heavy term here... dont know.. may be!!

I so agree with you. Death isnt the correct punishment for that person, but probably for his loved ones/family!
The criminal deserves to rot in the prison, and not enjoy the freedom from life post-death!

Vivek Panda said...

My dear Keshi,

you have put down your thoughts very touchingly. Now lemme express myself :

Do you think it is a better option even for the criminal to be rotting in the prison for 12 years than to take a strong dose of poison and...whoosh...meet the ineviable in life.

Everyday hundreds of innocent people die of starvation while millions of tonnes of food are being served to criminals...is it right ?

What does your conscience say ?

take care,
vivek

Hey v000nie :)

Totally respect ur pint of view...but ofcourse I don't agree :)

**What @ abortions? Arent we killing life here?
What @ killing animals, or we can kill them but we shudnt hang humans.

Abortion is wrong...it's killing too. Animal cruelty is the same! I never said any of this is ok :) but ppl still do it, just like maintaining death penalty.

**If a person alive can be a threat to the society, better kill him and save the rest.

tell me this v000nie...we have been executing ppl for centuries...has crime rates beinf reduced or increased now compared to then? Infact there's more crime now than before! What I mean death penalty in no way a detterent. Must be for u and me cos we r sane, but the willed man is going to do it no matter what. And by saying that killing him is saving 100 more innocents is so somehow not quality justice...would u kill someone just to protect ur peace? Then wouldnt u be doing just the same as what the criminal did? Cos he killed someone for his peace of mind too be it anger or in sheer revenge...

**How wud u justify it to those who lost their lives in this process.

There's no way u can bring back the dead and there's no way u can punish the dead :)

Thanks v000nie...I'm with u on what u mean abt insane ppl etc but I just don't see capital punishment as a real and quality punishment :)

Hey Saffronz :)

yes it's more like High School debates lol! But it's all good...good to debate like this...:)

**Why should taxpayers' $$ be spent on the upkeep of murderers/drug traffickers?

Saffronz d u know it costs millions just to manitain the death penalty w.o. even executing anyone in a year? :) Have u read the link I gave in the post...u should....

**And I do wonder, is it more humane to end his life or to keep him behing bars for the rest of his life

yes it is...it humane cos we aint killing anyone...plus it is the most severe yet quality form of punishment in the sense that he/she will repent it every sinngle day of his life and ofcourse he/she isnt dead not to know what losing freedom is abt :) dun u think?

Anyways thanks Saffy for ur views and I repect them too...altho we dun have to agree on all, we r going well hehe :)

Uttaraaaa ooops I mean Drew :) Someone's got a sexxxy voice...wooohooo ;-)

Saby it will take me 1 week to read that comment lol but I will get back to u soon :)

Arun hey thanks and ur right...but who r we to judge anyone? :)

lolz Johnnyboy lets agree to disagree yeyyyy! That way we still can keep our friendship as well as our sanity intact lol :)

Somewhere helloo!

Thanks for seeing my point of view...yes it's sad that there's so many who think killing another is ok...well the world is full of different ppl na...we must respect all views :)

Hey Guys,

Thanks for a healthy debate on this topic..I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for bringing across ur honest views and even tho some of them differed from mine, I respect all of ur views and justifications. Everyone has a point of view and just becos it's different from mine it doesnt mean they r wrong...we r only mere mortal beings on this Earth...we are limited in so many ways that decisions we make for ourselves and even for others can be totally wrong even without our knowledege. So in this topic, maybe Im wrong...or maybe you are wrong...only God knows :)

But thanks so much for taking part and playing it like a sport. Keep ur heads straight and keep smiling always :)

Hugggggz all!
