In search of Compassion

Guys I know I have spoken about Death Penalty last week, but this is to inform that Tuong Van Nguyen was executed this morning at a Changi prison 6am Singapore time (9am Aus time). I couldn't help but write this post for the injustice against humanity that was carried out this morning (leaving aside the fact that he was a criminal).

I don't know Van at all, but I have Compassion for him...and I know what Love is...it's not about I, ME and MYSELF...it's about YOU too. It's about learning to forgive others and allowing people to change. It's about having faith and trust in a young person to change...to do something good some day...to give him a chance. It's not about Revenge! Van's lawyer said that Van had immensely changed in his prison time, became a devoted Catholic and was prepared to die without blaming anyone for his fate. He had a troubled story behind him too (the 2 boys above are Van and his twin brother in childhood)...just like all of us have a story to tell, but now who was willing to listen to his story? No one. He carried drugs once in his life, so let's all get together and kil him?? Van's execution showed how little mankind has changed from the olden days where people were beheaded and the punishment didn't even fit the crimes. Man is still very evil and when I read some comments in the newspapers that supported his execution, I was shocked at how heartless some people can be. But at the same time churches around Australia and hundreds of people were keeping candlelight vigils for Van in the past few days leading upto his final minute on this Earth - that showed that alot of people have real Compassion in them too. I was at peace knowing that.

I know Van did something wrong and he had to go by the Singaporean law, but don't we ever make mistakes in our lives? And killing Van wont give him time to repent, neither will it stop the drug business. The man who doesn't choose drugs will never do drugs...the man who chooses drugs, will always do drugs, irrespective of Van's death. And the drug addicts, please don't blame it on Van...if you chose to take drugs, then it's your fault too. Where there is Demand there will be supply. While I don't condone Van's crime of carrying drugs, I don't condone the brutal execution either. And for those who say that he was about to ruin millions of other lives with drugs, please think twice...like I said before without demand there won't be supply. And those who take drugs are doing a crime too...what about their mistakes - do they get death penalty too? One way or the other, it's very easy to blame others but yourself. In a so-called civilised world today, where is Compassion or are we all just putting on an act of Love and Compassion while inside we are really evil? Ask yourselves that question. Where is dignity for human life? And to hang a man is a disgustingly cold-blooded thing to do!

I walked into my office this morning feeling horrible and helpless 'cos someone was being hanged while I went about doing my normal thing...that the world watched on and that there was absoultely nothing that could be done to help Van! Shame on you people who killed him...look into your hearts and search for Compassion...it's a huge mistake you made, much more worse than what Van made. 'Cos what you did will come back to haunt you. You all lack Compassion...find it before you lose yourself in anger, revenge and sheer evil. I couldn't sleep last night...it was disgusting and heartbreaking to see that Van still went to the gallows and no one in this big wide so-called beautiful world could stop it. Capital Punshiment should be eradicated in Memory of people like Van. Please don't think I'm making a martyr out of a criminal - this is about Human Life irrespective of what kind of mistakes he made. We can't allow calculated MURDER to take place whether by law or not. That's not quality justice..it's just economical and barbaric!

I know that I will fight against death penalty no matter what...I have already been in touch with
Amnesty even before Van's death and many more barbaric deaths, and I want to see that the world has nothing called Death Penalty in future, even if that takes many years to achieve. If you are with me on this, please help mankind know what true Compassion is before it disappears from the face of this Earth amidst violence and revenge. It won't do anything for mankind, but death and destruction. Is this the way we want to guide our children's conscience? How sad. Please get in touch with Amnesty and help to eradicate barbaric practices from this world.

Atleast now Van has been set free of evil men who thought his life was nothing and less valuable than their's. He will be forgiven and loved again. May he find that Compassion in God's loving arms...

Keshi, do you know that he committed the crime in other country? Singapore is not your country but it is my neighbor country at which my grandmom and many other relatives are still the citizen of it.

It is so unfair for non-Singaporean and non-Malaysian to judge the way we treat drug dealers or runners in our countries.

ALL drug dealers worldwide know that Malaysia and Singapore put death penalty for drug dealers, so why bother coming to our countries with those illegal thing? Besides, since he was in Singapore, where you think he will distribute the drugs?

HE WILL KILL OUR NATIONMEN AND WOMEN. And we don’t welcome that.

Singapore is less than 1 KM from Malaysia vise versa, and we will hang anybody who attempt to smuggle or distribute drugs in our country!

I pray to the lord to show his mercy to Nguyen Tuong Van and Michael McAuliffe but I like to warn Australian for not coming here or Singapore with drugs or you will see the hang rope circling your neck.

It is not easy for our governments to deal with drug addicts in our countries, but if we could stop the dealers, THE BUYING WILL STOP!

Both Singapore and Malaysia have spent billion of dollars for drug rehab centers and we do not wish to use up our tax monies for that.

Again, if any of you don’t want to DIE in our countries, do not come here with drugs.

Personally I don't think drug dealers are solely responsible for people dying coz of taking drugs. People taking those drugs are also to be blamed for. Van Nguyen deserved a life sentence, not a death penalty.

All of us make mistakes and are spared

Something that forces me to sit down and think about what happened at this place whrere iam living now.

Hi Keshi,
Its not that I like brutal killing, but I am also not against punishment. If u are interested in indian mythology, in Mahabharat or Ramayan, killing of Duryodhan and other Kaurav's were quite brutal. If he was forgiven then today's scene of world could have been different. Coz before doing something wrong, Van or criminal is well aware of the consequences. Its like if I do something wrong and then I become totally God-fearing person and expect grant from my punishment then its wrong.
This are my views.

as i said in the original death penalty post i totally agree with you here.

when will ppl understand that,
justice is not revenge,
murdering criminals will not bring down the crime rate,
even if it does(or allow us to fool ourselves it does),this kind of killing, will only make us equal to ppl who murder in order to benefit from it.

as for ppl who say that is their countries law and others should not interfere, i will say we all of us belong to the same family whether you like it or not.- you, us, and the criminal.

I fully understand that he is a criminal and that Singapore has it's own law. But just as much as u support Death Penalty, I detest it.

**It is so unfair for non-Singaporean and non-Malaysian to judge the way we treat drug dealers or runners in our countries....

u r talking about a country's self-induced laws being judged...what about a human life's value being judged by an age-old, ineffective and barabric law? It's not abt a country's laws Im talking abt in this post...it's abt Human Rights...compassion...not degrading urself to the criminals' levels. Abt not using Death Penalty to boost self-image.

**HE WILL KILL OUR NATIONMEN AND WOMEN

Who killed who today? This is solid proof than what would have happened in the future. Maybe no one would have died if Van was still alive...maybe he would have turned out to be a better person. And do u honestly think that all drug addicts will stop their habits now that Van is dead??

**but I like to warn Australian for not coming here or Singapore with drugs

It's not Aus that came there with drugs..it's Van. I think it's wise not to blame a whole country for one man's deeds. Cos alot of other countrymen come into Aus with drugs too butAus don't point fingers at those countries. They punish them in jail terms and that's it.

**but if we could stop the dealers, THE BUYING WILL STOP!

hehe..Van was suppsedly only a carrier. If he lived, he would have told the main dealers' details.
And na it wont stop...as long as the demand is there, the supply will also be there. Think abt ppl who take drugs...they r at fault too.

Jay u have taken this post personally :) It was nothing against Singapore. It was purely against Death Penalty, and u still failed to tell me anything abt Compassion.

Thanks anyways!

Why is it wrong? May be u really changed from a bad person to a good person. Im not telling that u walk out scott-free, but perhaps u need that 'chance' to live and repent?? Why don't ppl have hope and faith in ppl anymore?

Exactly my point!
How can u even grant them a thing called last meal? As if what he eats gets a chance to digest! DISGUSTING! I puke at that thought of a last meal...

**as for ppl who say that is their countries law and others should not interfere, i will say we all of us belong to the same family whether you like it or not.- you, us, and the criminal.

SO RIGHT! Human family...not human-animal family. Ppl think they can so righteously point fingers at others when they themselves are behaving like barbarians. Did I say LIKE...no they ARE barabarians.

**if u were the victim , would u ever be able to forgive him ???

He should feel every bit of the crime he committed...he should lose all his freedom for life and become a better person and die in prison...and when he dies, he would have really repented it and known what how much life he really missed.

**suppose ur family was destroyed because of this drug dealer , would u ever be able to forgive him ??

lol Deepa how can i blame the dealer for my famly's mistakes? If I went and drank alcohol all my life and died of it, would I blame the alcohol dealer?

actually , many a time , i thought like you ...

as in why go easy on a criminal by giving him a death sentence instead of a life sentence ...

but u know , if u wanna teach all those criminals around that u are gonna put ur foot down on crime , mayb death sentence is the only way ...
coz i feel the only thing criminals are scared of is death ....

and supposing a 75yr old man is given a life sentence for all the crimes he did in his lifetime, whatz the use ??

Why not sure said...

U r right death penalty is not the ultimate punishment. But main reason for death penalty is "may be" to set an example for other "to be" criminals. I know it never stops any new criminal to do a crime. But see these days its not like it used to be.
Its like "Sau choohe maar kar billi chali haj ko".
Chance is given to people to improve, but then there are different laws in every country and thats what Van has to abide to.
If he would have done it in India, and not caught or he would have been arrested and was jailed for few years, what would have been our reaction then? Again he will come out and will be more comfortable with criminals in India and start some Gangs or something. Thats how so many criminal tribes errupting in India from across the border.

Nisha said...

Hi keshi :)

I feel there are 2 ways to look at this situation

(1) He is given the worst punishment for the crimes he has committed.
He has destroyed many people's lives.

(2) If given life-sentence, there is a probabilty that he might escape and commit the same crimes again.

So looking at it from those 2 perspectives it seems fair..

Have a great weekend!

I dont think this is the right time to argue abt anything. Your post sounded really emotional, and i know u are just that.. I can understand.. I hope n pray that his soul rests in peace, thts the best we can do...
Wanted to convey this - The execution of Van was given so much publicity, and thus it has come to everyone's notice... But like this, there are millions of ppl dying... I don think its fair to jus pick a few up from here and there, and show our compassion. If justice is to be served, each n everyone deserves it.. But sadly, out of 100, 1 case of execution gets publicity and the world expresses their condolence to the family involed.. While the remaining 99, whose fate is no different, go unnoticed.. Not fair, is it? Sad....
[This has nothin to do with the argument about the common sense behind capital punishment.. One particular thot jus crossed my mind, and thus i penned it down]
get back to old ways soon.. Life goes on..
Take care Kesh..

somehow i cant subscribe to the concept of no capital punishment. it will definitely result in more number of murders as people realize that they wont lose their lives even if they kill someone. this will lead to the other extreme of barbarianism. so mabbe capital punishment in that sense reduces the number of crimes. capital punishment for non-murder crimes (like drug deal) is a different thing, whihc i agree..

this is what I dun u'stand...cos how do we know what he'll turn out to be later in life w.o. even giving him a chance in prison? this wasnt the 2nd time or the 3rd time, it was his 1st crime ever. He even wrote a letter to the President of Sing to say that he accepted his mistake and he's ready to abide by the law...he didnt beg for clemency, his lawyers did. So dun talk w.o. knwoing ur facts.

And it's very easy for ppl to say that death penalty is great blah blah blah, but one has to really witness another man being hanged to even imagine how cruel it is. Those who say killing another is ok, have u even witnessed a love-one dying? I guess not. The lawyers for Ryan (another Aussie killed in Sing) said that when they watched his hanging, it was too horrible that they will never forget it until the day they die...

it's cold-blooded and calculated murder in the name of so-called LAW!

I totally understand what u r saying. That's just the basic understanding of how death scares anyone. But d u honestly think Van's death will stop all drug dealers? Or another murderer's death will stop all the future murderers? Ppl dun go murder or do drugs as a hobby, to stop that hobby in fear of capital punishment...whoever who is going to do it will do it anyways!

So like Sudeep stated we need to stop the crimes...not commit another crime to stop the crimes. Cos who's going to give us the death penalty then? :)

**and supposing a 75yr old man is given a life sentence for all the crimes he did in his lifetime, whatz the use ??

How do we know what the use is for him? We cant measure that on his behalf, can we? It really may mean something for him to repent in last years...and perhaps rescue himself from sin before death.

Ppl who say death penalty is great must sit and watch the gallows when an exceution happens. I have read a story where a witness of an execution stated his emotions...his daughter died at the hands of that criminal...and he wanted the criminal to die and he won the case..so he went to the gallows to watch his daughter's killer being killed...he said that after watching it he wished that he never did this...that he never asked for death penalty for this person...that he never got closure from it...only pure misery and more shock of the horrible death...he said it doubled his pain and added one more crime to it....and that he felt guilty as hell. He said he will never forget it and he will never receive closure from thsi anyways.

These r ppl who have really been there and done it. So beware of what u wish for...

The Aberdare committee heard a lot of medical evidence and one witness,

Dr. Marshall described a hanging in 1886 as follows.
"I descended immediately into the pit where I found the pulse beating at the rate of 80 to the minute, the wretched man struggling desperately to get his hands and arms free. I came to this conclusion from the intense muscular action in the arms, fore arms and hands, contractions, not continuous but spasmodic, not repeated with any regularity but renewed in different directions and with desperation. From these signs I did not anticipate a placid expression on the face and I regret to say my fears were correct. On removing the white cap about 1 1/2 minutes after the fall I found the eyes starting from the sockets and the tongue protruded, the face exhibiting unmistakable evidence of intense agony."
A better table of drops was worked out and these awful incidents largely became a thing of the past.
It is notable that there were quite few problems with early lethal injections before the learning curve was surmounted.
The British Home Office was eventually able to issue executioners with a table of dro

Hiya Keshi,
I'm not without compassion, but it sickens me to the stomach that while the politians are clamouring against Ngyeun's capital sentence, have they forgotten that not too long ago, they themselves were pressing oh so loudly for the Indonesian bombers (who, BTW, caused the death of quite a few Australians) to be put to death?

And, you should not forget that the drugs that Nyuen is carrying is not for Singapore, but for Australia. He has enough doses for 26000 addicts in Australia.

What he did was not a mistake.

It cannot be correct that young children, who are offered drugs just right outside their schools bu pushers have it THEIR OWN FAULT that they become drug addicts.

It cannot be that Nygeun would give information, because he DELIBERATELY gave FALSE information while in custody.

And most importantly, it cannot be wrong that I want to demand a safe place for children to grow up, where they can walk down the streets of Sydney or Melbourne or any other city in the world wihout being offered drugs-disguised-as-candy

Last but not least, it cheapens the act of observing a minutes' silence of the death of a man who knwoingly saw the devestation drugs had wrought on his twin brother, and yet, cold-heartedly, chose to be a carrier and wrought the same misery on othe families.

Tell me, has Nygeun any compassion for his own mother, for all the other mothers out there and for all the mothers-to-be?

Nygeun saw his mother lost a son to drugs, yet HE CHOSE TO LET HIS MOTHER LOSE ANOTHER SON TO DRUGS.

*Say NO to drugs*

I totally understand what u r saying Saffronz. But I cant speak for the politicians cos they are them...and I am just me :) I know that some Aussies wantes Amrozi dead cos he was a mass-murderer...I still dun agree with them cos it comes down to the same bigger principle of Human Rights. But that's my opinion. But as some ppl here stated, mass Murder may look very much more death-penalty deserving to the majority of the public, than a one-off drug trafficking...
Again I dun support death penalty...and I cant speak for ppl who do...

**And, you should not forget that the drugs that Nyuen is carrying is not for Singapore, but for Australia.

I havent forgotten that and that's why the lawyers tried an Extradition approach of the case too...but Sing didnt allow it cos he was caught there. If he was caught in Aus (as alot of other foreigners r being daily caught and sent to jail in Aus), then Van's fate would have been less barbaric and human-rights would have prevailed too.

***He has enough doses for 26000 addicts in Australia.

Agreed! But Im not saying these drug users r innocent...they chose it. If they couldnt get it from Van, they would find someone else!

**What he did was not a mistake.

It is Saffronz...it was grave mistake of choosing between what's right and wrong...

**It cannot be correct that young children, who are offered drugs just right outside their schools bu pushers have it THEIR OWN FAULT that they become drug addicts.

?? In which country does this happen? C'mon if they give it out like Candy to kids, then how would they get any money from it?? Drug addicts are ppl who have probs, who cant face the reality of their lives...so they 'choose' drugs...just like someone else would 'choose' alcohol or prostitution or violence. U and I didnt choose any of it and it's because we come from families that took care of us or because we have a healthy conscience than they do.

So it's really not right to blame just the drug traffickers...it's also the addicts' fault. Both are doing something agianst the so-called LAW so in ur theory both deserve death.
There wont be smoke w.o a fire neither will there be Supply w.o. Demand.

**It cannot be that Nygeun would give information, because he DELIBERATELY gave FALSE information while in custody.

How do we know? Now that he's dead we will never know anyways...how foolish!

**And most importantly, it cannot be wrong that I want to demand a safe place for children to grow up, where they can walk down the streets of Sydney or Melbourne or any other city in the world wihout being offered drugs-disguised-as-candy

True. But would killling Van give u that much-demanded safety? Yes I u'stand that other would-be-traffickers will be more wary of it and will be scared now. But will it stop the current drug business? Would it stop the family probs or whatever that will sprout new drug-users? The main drug traffickers will continue just like terrorism continues to grow inspit of many terrosits being sent to death row. We should kill the crime, not the criminals.

**Last but not least, it cheapens the act of observing a minutes' silence of the death of a man who knwoingly saw the devestation drugs had wrought on his twin brother, and yet, cold-heartedly, chose to be a carrier and wrought the same misery on othe families.

The minute of silence was ruled out by the Aussie govt. But whoever who observed silence at the time Van struggled at the end of the rope, was out of pure humanity I guess...no one would want a death like that no matter how cruel a criminal we r talking abt...

**Tell me, has Nygeun any compassion for his own mother, for all the other mothers out there and for all the mothers-to-be?
Nygeun saw his mother lost a son to drugs, yet HE CHOSE TO LET HIS MOTHER LOSE ANOTHER SON TO DRUGS.

True I agree. 100% correct cos I thought abt that too. It was really stupid of Van and yes HE WAS WRONG. No doubt he did a very serious crime and a huge let-down on his Mother. But does that deserve death??
Though he did a grave misdeed to his Mother, I don't think his mother wanted him dead...she still wanted his son to live and she will forgive him....cos he's her son.

****Say NO to drugs*

Indeed. NO to drug trafficking and NO to drug-use.

If this case brought anything good out of it, it's the fact that yyoung ppl should stay away from drugs. Van's death is a profound message to traffickers as well as users. Stop the drug business before more lives r taken from both sides, and yes unfairly for both sides of the families.

Thousands of people are killed every year in the U.S for violating drug laws .. they become victims of prison violence ..dying at the hands of gangs, murderers and other members of the violent inmate population. In addition, criminal prosecution ruins people’s lives and careers ..which often leads to destitution and suicide. Add to that the number of people killed during police raids. In nearby Ventura County a small army of police smashed into the home of an innocent rancher ..and shot him to death when he ran in panic. Where is the compassion in that ..? Drug laws distort law enforcement priorities ..instead of chasing violent criminals, police target ordinary citizens ..and fill our prisons with people who do not belong there. Isn’t there a more realistic and humane approach to drug use than criminalization ..?

true...I dun condone drugs but death is not going to stop it in anyway! It will only kill one drug dealer while another 100 is being born somewhere else. And no one has the right to wipe out a human life just like that...that's murder over drugs...which is better? NONE!

Thanks for ur very informative comment Lee...I knew that prisoners in the US and everywhere else live violent lives even within the walls...no human rights r preserved once taken into the hands of the so-called law enforcemnet officers...it's appalling! Guys...ok what I intended to do was connect this post with the Salvation post and re-assess what u thought was ur Salvation path...

Those who said that their Salvation path was based on whatever sins they did and since they didnt sin (in their own judgement) that they feel they r in the correct path...think for a moment. A sin is not done just by words or hands...it can also be committed by a cruel thought. You may not have killed anyone else, but to think it's OK TO KILL someone (even if he/she is a violent criminal) is equivalent to the act of killing itself...dun get me wrong - why I think so is becos, we think before we speak....and we think before we act. So if u think u want to kill, then u will do so too...

Fo those who said that Salvation is abt having a good conscience...if u thought that death penalty is still good, then ur conscience needs to be reviewed...conscience is sense of right and wrong. And if u think it's ok to kill someone, is it good conscience, cos is it good to kill someone no matter what?

Those who thought Karma was the Salvation path...and if u thought that Killing is good, then is that good Karma? Cos good Karma by all 3 avenues of thought, word and deed must be maintained. So if a killing thought sprouted in ur hearts, that's almost equivalent to killing someone by ur own hands...

Im not in any way trying to say that those who did not support the death penalty r the best ppl on Earth with the right Salvation path etc. They may be bad/weak in other areas of life, I dunno...

What I intend to tell u here is that I'm surprised that those who came very close to death and knew what it is to fear death, still support another man's violent death. Our miseries in life, our tests and trials should make us better ppl in thoughts, words and deeds...not make us more vengeful and cruel. Grow some compassion and reap the fruits of Love and Forgiveness...u will see the difference...and u will never fear death :)

Thanks all!

Abolish the Death Penalty is a blog dedicated to...well, you know. The purpose of Abolish is to tell the personal stories of crime victims and their loved ones, people on death row and their loved ones and those activists who are working toward abolition. You may, from time to time, see news articles or press releases here, but that is not the primary mission of Abolish the Death Penalty. Our mission is to put a human face on the debate over capital punishment.

Keshi, you are talking about humanity. Imagine….

If I raped you in front your brother and father, and after that, I grab your sister and rape her in front of you and your family. You mother lose her sanity seeing what I did and end up her life in her own hands. Few days later, I was arrested for it by the police and was sentenced to death.

Would you say like what you said in here about NOT fair for me to be sentenced to death?

Sometimes it is easy to say things when it isn’t happened to us but when we are in the state of it, we will understand.

DO you have the compassion on saving my life after what I have done to you and your sister?

No offense to my brutal example but just picture it and tell me how you feel.

Drug addictions are like being raped by the drugs to their bodies and do you know how suffer the family feels to see their sons/daughters being ripped off by it? I take drugs as very serious offense as the same as murderer, so I stand to my principle! Eye to an eye! Life to a life!

Drug dealers don’t deserve to live, go find other jobs!

Ohh.. just because he has turned to be someone “good” while in the prison and worship god you feel pity for him? Where was his god when he was busy distributing drugs?

Some more words.....(my, i'm getting long-winded)

I was pretty ambivalent abt this case. In fact, I might have even felt some compassion for him.

But the inane rattering that has been coming from some quarters have so lost the point, lost hte big picture that I totally fail to see what is WRONG with hanging him now.

There is such a thing as overkill....

Sometimes, politians have too much heart in the most inappropriate circumstances.

Well Keshi !

U may have a valid point but this is a topic which can be debated on and on. Last time we have a death penalty in India was when a 20 something guy raped and killed and innocent girl may be of 14-15. Mass opinion showed over 80% people were in favor of the penalty.I personally believe that this punishment should be reserved for henious crimes committed & thats how indian judicial system uses this punishment. Personally speaking I am not in favor of completely removing this as form of punishment. It should always remain there as deterrent.

**dis dame never apologizes

I havent committed any crime by thought word or deed in this post..so tell me why should I apologise? I didnt say i DIDNT feel compassion for the victims did I? I was talking on behalf of another victim too...a victim of the state-sanctioned death penalty. Maybe it's u admit ur guilt and apologise cos u supported his death - hence it is U who sinned. Not me. So u can shut ur senseless crap now.

***Manish

I understand what u mean...brutal criminals r unforgivable...and I really dun think one-off drug trafiicking deserves death and that too an Aus citizen on his way home...those drugs were supoosed to arrive here. Aus govt would have handled drug trafficking ina better and human way.

And if u look at it, it's the countries that still maintain death penalty that have the highest rates of brutal crime. Europe and Aus has no detah penalty and trust me, these countries have less crime compared to all those countires that boost their image by killing ppl. So it's really not a deterrent. And I think it promotes violence...

Thanks anyways :)

Keshi u can't compare highly educated developed society like aussies to a devoloping countries like us.

I will be surprised if ur statistics holds true for two developing nations with similar societies where one has such penalty and the other has not!

In India it is clear directive to judges that this punishment should be reserved for rarest of rare cases. The criminal in the case u presented here may have got just LI here.

hey na I aint comparing India with Aus - Just take Aus and the US...:) I dun even have to say a word...hehe..

I respect India's laws...cos I know they dun just put ppl to death...they only do it to the real brutal maniacs.

Thanks Manish :)

hi keshi!
on the day he was excuted, i wrote a post on my blog too.

his exucation made me question my belief. as you see, i still cannot say that i have a confirmed stand on this matter.

singapore and malaysia has seen a rise in HIV+ patients as a result of our citizens being drug addicts. a few years back, the sight of young citizens, always high and wasting away, was rampant. that`s when the death penalty was implimented. the punishment HAS to be harsh, otherwise this problem cannot be (not stopped altogether, as the gain is high)controlled.

another point of interest in the fact that Van Nguyen was an australian; might have contributed to the worldwide media interest. a couple of years back, a malaysian was excuted in singapore for similar reasons as well. only our local papers featured his story. we did not have the president of US condemning his death publicly.

Compassion, as you said, is needed in mankind. however, i think it is not right to demand compassion from a mother who loses her child to OD.

but, there are always two sides to a coin.

there are times when i question the right of mankind to take a life. there are also times when i thank the law for removing criminals from public.

i just don`t know...

Hey thanks and I agree with nmost of what u said..and I respect ur views.

**Compassion, as you said, is needed in mankind. however, i think it is not right to demand compassion from a mother who loses her child to OD.

Na it aint demanding compassion...it's a request to consider comapssion instead of violence...if we build this society on retribution and violence, then there will be more and more drug addicts too...

Thanks!
Keshi.
