An Old Soul

This post was written 1.cos this has been bothering me for years and 2.cos here in this blog I have visitors from many faiths, lands, cultures and experiences so I will get a nice variety of views on this to think about. I'm talking about Rebirth. I come from a Buddhist/Hindu background and alot of Buddhists/Hindus believe in rebirth. However I'm a person who don't blindly believe in any theory just cos it's believed so in my faith/culture whatever. I like to think rationally and fairly based on my understanding and experiences. Buddhism claims that there is rebirth for each one of us. That the soul travels through many lifetimes until it finally attains Nirvana(enlightenment). What alot of baggage the soul must carry huh, and think about the airfares whoaaaa! Imagine finding an old undy from a previous birth in your suitcase? Ok sorry guys jokes apart, do you believe in rebirth, if so why? If you think this is all a big fat joke, then tell me why? I wanna know cos I can't understand why some good people suffer and some bad people never seem to suffer in this life. Not that I wish any person to suffer but it doesn't make sense when a good man dies young or falls sick and is not able to enjoy life, while some mean old loser lives a paradise of a life. Now you may say it's pure coincidence/luck but what exactly is that luck? If we do good, don't we deserve good? They say you reap what you sow, well then why do some good folks suffer unfairly or are born with genes that make them terminally ill or are met with some terrible accident or face an unbearable misfortune due to no fault of their's?

Looking at the other side of the coin, if at all there is a rebirth mechanism, what does it serve by making good people suffer in this life where they have been good anyways? If there is a past life that may haunt you for many lifetimes to come, then should we easily blame this life's mistakes/misfortunes on our past life's deeds? My point is, if there's a rebirth at all then how does it work in a sensible manner that's fair to everyone?

However I have read many stories of reincarnation from around the world, of children remembering details of their past lives that later proved to be shockingly accurate. I've also come across some chilling rebirth stories from Sri Lanka/India that make me believe there must be some truth in it. Once there was this very famous story about a small Sri Lankan girl that was in the papers. She was only around 6yrs old and she used to be so afraid of passing this specific bridge in her town. Everytime she passed this place, she used to cry, feel extremely frightened and frantic. So her parents asked her why she was so afraid of that small bridge and then she had told them that she had died there. They were astounded and asked her for more details. Apparently she gave the most specific details of the accident, names, dates etc and they verified all of that to be true! In fact a few years before this girl was born, some other girl had died at that bridge in a car accident on her way to school. So they took this little girl back to her old house and she apparently hugged her people from the past like she knew them so well, and she even showed off her bedroom, toys etc to her current parents! If it's just some intuition in that girl then why did she feel that love for those strangers, the room and the stuff? Why that unbearable fear at the bridge? Sometimes we choose to ignore what we can't understand or what scares us the most or what might make us look silly. Although I know I'm not going to find definite answers to most of my questions here, I do feel like an old soul sometimes and I do get that Deja Vu feeling with certain places, people and events. Now isnt that cool :)

Buddhism denies the reality of a permanent self. However, something has to reincarnate, following the dictates of karma(deeds). You may ask if there is no real self, who then inherits the deeds and reincarnates? Buddha answered that only karma is passing from one life to another, using the illustration of the light of a candle, which is derived from another candle without having a substance of its own. In the same manner apparently there is rebirth without the transfer of a self from one body to another. The only link from one life to the next is of a causal nature.

According to what deeds are done
Do their resulting consequences come to be,
Yet the doer has no existence
This is the Buddha’s teaching.

What are your honest thoughts on this?

I really think this can not be a thinking matter.

The most you try to understand with your "logical" abilities, the most confused you get.

There are some things that are faith, something inside you tells you one thing or another. Study, read different opinions, etc. may help, but at the end... I think no one can say I have the truth.

I personally don't belive in rebirth. I come from the catholic culture and my belive is that God made you unique and humans are not separated pieces: body, soul, mind... you are you with all your components... Would you be the same if you were blonder/fatter/taler etc.?...

But, as I said, those are just belives, I can't say I have the truth and we will only know when we get there!

PS: sorry for my english, not my native language!

A very long post and a very long comment by me. Sorry for typos.
I come from a Hindu background. My mother and father are hardcore Brahmins. And according to them we pay for our previous life's deeds in present life. This is known as "Yoni" or say form. May be in previous life I was in "Pashu Yoni" i.e. in animal form. Anyway. But I am a known atheist and always look for rational answers. But reincarnation has always put me in trouble. I have heard and read many stories of rebirth where kids tell things which elders cant even imagine. Unexplainable. How? Why?
Then like you said. Some bad people enjoy the life and some good dont. We have n number of bad ppl enjoying good life. Bush. Rahul Mahajan. Manu Sharma. Lalu Yadav and many Indian Politicians. Where as a normal taxpaying honest Govt. employee spends whole life in a rented accomodation struggling to send his kids to some good college. Why? No explaination. I have a theory which I call "Dance on chance". The honest govt employee didnt get any "Chance" in his/her life and so he/she could not dance. But Bush did. Now who gives you "Chance"? There is no GOD. I dont find any good logical or rational answer to this question why GOD didnt give chance to the honest person and Bush got it...No explaination.
So in the end its all confusing. The best thing is to sip a Mojito if you are feeling hot or take a small drink of XXX RUM if you are shivering with cold and keep enjoying the life.

ahmm ahmm ... did u realize u gave many answers to the questions thyself?

life ain't fair with everyone ... but we expect fairness ... which is why rebirth was probably invented ;) ... another measure of control ... to say ur miseries r b'coz of ur previous life and what u do now would affect u later ... which amazingly works

** as for "you reap what you sow"

if u don't sow you can't reap ... @ least that u buy right? besides its a very subjective clause so dun take it literally ... humans are higher beings ... we sow for our progeny to reap ;)

I'd like to have a BBC documentary on the story u told ... I'v seen one on zombies in haiti ... it was a superb scientific dissection of how they make believe ;) cogently ... with ur case too I am skeptic unless proven :)

its human tendency to want to believe in something beyond us ... such things take of quite easily ... as travolta wud say in SwordFish - "what the eyes see and the eay hears the mind believes"

** I do feel like an old soul sometimes and I do get that Deja Vu feeling with certain places, people and events

did you realize that everyone likes to say something like that obut themselves ... coz it buyz attention (am not pointing @ ya)

IMHO everyone of us have a subconscious alter ... n these feelings point to that

as for the topic by itself ... I'd say every individual lives by his perception ... buddha had his perceptions of things

I regularly watch his marma thodar called chidambara ragaseeyam ... its based on naadi jooseeyam ... that karma in previous life affects what u reap now ... nice fiction ... but its just a flick like "The DaVinci Code" ... to make one question why not!!!

I am a believer in existentialism :) ... I continue to persist coz I choose to ... maybe my interpretation of buddhist teachings is not what was intended ... like chineese whispers

I guess for some ppl buddhist teachings works best, whilst others go with what suits them best

Hard to say in english, but I’ll try…

I do believe in rebirth. I think the big problem with this karma thing is that we judge so much what happened. There’s not something ‘good’ or something ‘bad’ happening to us. There is just ‘something’. It is as it is. Only our personal view makes it good or bad.
How many times something ‘good’ later turned out to be ‘bad’ or holds you back in comfort? And how many times something ‘bad’ turned out to be ‘good’, just corrects your way of life and lets you grow? Hmmm…

The mechanism of rebirth is to throw you from good to bad to good to bad, from right to left to right, from up to down to up to down…. until you stop and come to your middle, until you stop judging, until you realize that it just is as it is. Maybe then you can find some peace.

Once a guy said: ‘nothing is better, nothing is worse, nothing is equal’…. How wise!!

Keshi,

I think that reincarnation makes a lot of sense from a scientific standpoint as well as a religious one.

Science states that matter cannot be created or destroyed. Every living (and non-living) thing is made out of matter. When we die and our bodies begin the process of decomposition, the matter that once formed us is being transformed into other objects.

Have you thrown pieces of paper out of your window? Do that and see how far they would go and where they land depends on how the wind blows them. That is the the force of karma.

I would love to faithfully believe in rebirth. I really can't comment on this just yet because I would need to seriously think about it. However, Karma has always been a 'what comes around goes around' thing for me. Or something like 'bad vibes.' I could be mistaken but yes, I believe in karma.

I dont believe in rebirth...as I have not seen and its not justified yet enough to convince me! I remember as a kid, my Library Teacher wanted me to believe in it and hence he used to always select books for me which were on rebirth and dear I think because of him, I read many books worth of pages 500 and above and till date nothing could shake my belief!
I do believe in karma...as you sow so you reap...I truly believe in it. For me hell and heaven is here itself...when we do something wrong it comes back and bites us...and when we get those small rewards that coz we did something good for someone :)
I like to take good things from all religion thats how I am brought up too but then I try to find logic in it and what makes sense to me I take that :)! There is a lot of things good in Islam, I have read Quran, Bible, Geeta, Gurugranth and so on...but my beliefs are all said above
I liked ur post...amazing topic !

Ah, humans and their belief in rationalisation and in particular fairly !! *sigh* The root cause of our restlessness, aint it? Yeah, one life form to another and who chooses it in what aspect? Y cant you be that deprived stray dog on the road instead, be a Keshi/TLW. How long would it have taken for you to be there and not be what you are?

I guess the answers to these are beyond the rationalisation of human mind !! We so believe in rationalising everything, aint it? What if its just an illusion? and that it is all just irrational ?
:-) because our mode of understanding and rationalising always depends on some assumptions and facts which we have understood in a certain way and believe it to be correct !!!

Hi,

I'm back again.

Great post. Made me think of a lot of things.
I've strong belief in Hinduism. But I'm not that sure about the concept of rebirth.

Yet I feel that what we do whether good or bad, we'll definetly reap the fruits whether sweet or bitter in the same life. I'm not sure of the rebirth were we'll reap for our good or bad deeds we've done in the previous life.

Luv U Dear Friend.

Keshi,

Have you ever thought of destiny? Yes, i believe that there is someone who wrote the whole program for us, there is destiny, and along with this destiny we move.
Sometimes, we tend to think "we are free to choose, so what the hell is the destiny", but are we really free? We have a choice, but again that choice comes with consequences and results. If all our actions were free, then certainly i would call it nirvana, but now, at this moment, everything is written already, all our choices are restricted. We might seem to be free, but we arent!
Well, about the rebirth part, i firmly believe in it. Re-birth occurs in all forms. The old soul cannot be free this soon. Just because you are good and you have served people, that doesnot mean that you will reach nirvana. To reach nirvana, you have to be free of everything, even yourself. When will that day come .. duh!!!
But until that day comes, we keep moving in circles, in the repeated cycle of life. It is a recursive loop whole end has a condition "get free", and till we reach that condition, we will continue moving in the function, neither static, nor our of it. Just a dynamic movement.
I am a Hindu, but i am very much secular. Though there are things we have learnt in hinduism about rebirths, if you are bad in this life, you might become a spider in the next. I dont believe in that. How good or how bad, these things are different from being "free". A person might be free of anything but doesnot do any good to the society while another might be a social worker, but does everything with desire and entanglements.

There are things which hint about "re-births" and some people might just go around saying, its only one life, enjoy! I say, its both. It is a golden opportunity for anyone to get a life, thinking power, intellect, so why not make a step closer to freedom? You have one life, enjoy and make the best of it. Yet, you will have another life, your sould wont reach infinity just like that. It has to take steps closer to that infinity. It has to move ahead. Sometimes, we just move in circles, we might never get a straight track.

I think, just the "idea" of thinking about rebirths, can lead us ahead.

Well, we have re-births, and though i dont have the proof, neither is it proved to me, i believe in it.

The question after that, what is nirvana? Does our soul travel beyond the universe after that? Or does it remain in the body itself. Because being a science student, i also believe that energy can neither be destroyed nor created. And, "i" (it consists of our soul as well) is a bundle of energy.

I think reberth is just a Hope. I also read an article in Newspaper, that a 5-year-old boy tells his previews life that he was married and got 3 kids. After hearing this there parents take him to the village where he said his wife and kids are staying, when they enquire there they said what every the boy said is true. He was died 7 years back in an accident. That boy was like to live with his wife and children’s, but the boys parents dint like him to stay there, now the case is in Panchayath. Me to don’t know the, the reberth is true or false. We can’t decide by hearing these issues that rebirth is true, that means I should have know my Last life know. You have Hope in this?

Pradeep Puranik said...

You asked for views, so here I go. Let me start by outlining 5 simple points:

1. Science tells us that nothing is created or destroyed. Things just are, and they are in a state of perennial flux - relativistic change - evolution.

2. Science (and common sense) tells us that our interpretations, which in turn depend on our perceptions, in turn depend heavily on a relativistic model of the world-view. What appears to be a point in one frame of reference, might indeed be a line from another dimension. What appears to be a line might indeed turn out to be a square when the point of view is rotated laterally.

3. Rationale tells us that all (wo)man-made measuring systems are also relativistic; there is nothing absolute about them. The distance between 2 points is relative also to the point of observation. Time is also one such relativistic measuring convention, and there is nothing absolute about it. Time is only an illusion that we have adopted for our measuring convenience.

4. Obviously then, the changes we observe around us are only relative to some original frame of reference that we chose to observe from, and also the dimension in which we prefer to perceive. A different frame or dimension would offer a different perception, and would result in a different conclusion.

5. However, when relativistic models are dropped, and a wholistic model applied, things begin becoming much much clear.

Now, coming to the topic proper:

I am a strong believer in Destiny. As such, I am rightly expected to think about rebirth. I do, but not in the conventional sense.

Traditional ideas about rebirth strangely rely on an extremely relativistic model of life. In my opinion, birth and death are relativistic concepts. Nothing is created nor destroyed. Things just are, distributed in various forms of energy.

At the lowest level, things are in a constant state of flux, of change, of evolution. But at the highest (wholistic) level, such change or flux is hardly evident. Whether we look at the subatomic level, or at the cosmic level, all things are one. They are neither born, nor die. They exist. They change from one form to another. They evolve.

And since time is a relativistic measuring system, or an illusion (I have already written about this a few posts ago), the question of past, present or future hardly arises. Therefore Karma is also an illusion.

Therefore, everything is permanent in one form or another. It is our awareness that tells us that we are. Remove awareness, and we will not know that we are. But we still will be. It is our intellect that questions our being, or about our being again. It is our double-edged sword of logic that severs things and concepts in a futile attempt to understand the secrets, the mysteries of our existence. The more we sever, the farther away we move from the truth.

They say that people could be born again as people at various levels, or as animals at various levels depending on something they call Karma. I have not heard anybody talk about people being reborn as an inanimate object - like a penstand, or a car. Nor have I heard of any person/persons being reborn as something intangible. Wonder why not!

In summary, we are neither born, nor do we ever die. We are. In one form or another. Whether we are aware of it or not. We are. And we are one with the cosmos, because we are made of the same elements as everything else around us is. Names and forms might vary, but we are.

And finally, only for those readers who may still not be able to agree that time is an illusion, I would put it this way, "We have been, are, and will be, albeit in different names and forms."

Cheers!

The same applies to rebirth. The stories about them are eerie and I have no explanation for them.
I do believe in Karma and that payback happens here and now.
Maybe the deist school of thought works? That god created the universe and abandoned it, to it's own which may explain crimes perpetrated on innocents, esp children?

** humans are not separated pieces: body, soul, mind... you are you with all your components...

I personally believe that humans do have a body and soul. Not cos my faith says so, but just cos of my own experiences. If we dun have a mind, who does the thinking? Where do the emotions come from? Why is it so hard for anyone in this world to read what's in another's mind? If the body and the mind is the same thing, then doctors should be able to work what's in ur mind too, just like they track diseases. Isnt it?

hey! hemm the old old soul theory.

Well there is nothing old bout it anymore. If you want to look at the scientific aspect of it all, we are made of particles which itself are billions of years old. Decay is very slow, hence we do share particles among all existence. Particles are responsible for out thougts as well, the synapse waves and so on which is also been in existense for eternity (loosely speaking). There is some unique properties of quantum theory called entanglement which can be used to describe old souls too. The theory mentions two particle separated by great distances which can share a 'link' through space (distance) and time! Amazing isnt it. So imagine ourselves sharing waves or particles from a infinite distance. If you think in the lines of this, then imagine all the SF books written. Could it be that we are linked somehow to other beings, aliens and such. And therefore also linked through time to other souls before us?

Its amazing, great to know the boundaries of existense, but sorry I could not subscribe to religions view of this. I have a service to do for science. But strangely enough both doesnt deviate much in its core concept.

This is realy something that is understood and believed differently by different faiths. Like you, we too are told that the body and soul are separate and the soul goes on and on talking any life form, could even be an animal.

The story you have narrated is just chilling. I too have heard such things and people being able to connect with their past lifes. I too get images or dreams which are recurring. I see one place and then I remember having seen that place before (it would be my first visit to that place in this life time) but I think I have seen it before. I often wonder if there is some way I can get myself checked and figure why I think I have seen the places tht I have not.

Irrespective of whether the soul and body are apart, I would lead a fine life to my standards and try my level best not to hurt others, if I am going to get punished in my next life or become a Queen because of my good deeds...
Regards why we suffer this life. Do we think why we are happy. I too would think of all the negative things in me, maybe medical and feel bad and ask wht bad did I go to deserve this but how often do I ask, wht good did I do to deserve such loving parents and wht not.

I really have no answer and this is a mystery we carry...:)

Keshi..enjoyed reading this post and started laughing halfway inbetween about finding an undie in your suitcase from your previous trips. But it is a very serious topic, there are so many things I dont understand, I truely believe in karma and that you reap what u sow. with that in mind I try to live my life. I have also questioned God many times about how is it that the good suffer and the bad are rewarded with good health and wealth. And as for the children who have done nothing wrong, how can he let them go hungry, i have so many unanswered questions, that it questions my faith in God. I can never understand how a good god can look down on this world and see what is happening.I dont know. I stopped thinking, I just try and live as best as I can, sometimes good and when I am bad I try to recover, because I believe in karma. I dont believe in rebirth, b ut if there is such a thing I ask god to send me back as an Eagle so I can fly to all parts of this world and enjoy the limitless sky.

Since energy cannot be created nor destroyed it makes sense that we have past lives because our energy just gets transfered.

However I have come to believe we dont have to pay for our bad karma from past lives.

A wise man once told me that when we get rid of the ego (devil inside) we "die" to the world and are reborn.

I was once told by an oracle about my past life. Weird ancient Egypt stuff

I think I would love to come back as a dolphin. :)

Aside from that the jury is still out on what I think about it.

My darling Keshi,
I have said this before and may I see it again.

Our destinies are not in the stars
But in our own hands.

My father was a certified metaphysician and he believed in what you have posted. And what you mentioned was similar to the confession of one of my nephews who was also about 6 or 7 when his father was taking him along the street where my father lived years ago. The little boy suddenly stopped infront of the house where my father lived and said he wanted to go and greet his neighbours and he had never been there before. His father said he nearly passed out. And his father is an ordained pastor.

I have had some uncanny feelings whenever I watched movies of America from the 1920s to the 50s and the same feelings come over me whenever I also hear music from that period and tears would be pouring from my eyes as I felt very familiar with the scenes and music as if I belonged to that period. But, I have dismissed all these mysterious happenings. Because, they have been used to oppress the poor and needy in primitive cultures and they have become chains of bondage to imprison the poor and needy and we must not believe in the lies of Satan. We must not grope in the darkness of the past. We must embrace the enlightenment of truth and shine in the light of our salvation.

The only Karma I will welcome is if you come to me and tell me that you were my lost lover in a past life and have returned to be reunited with me. And we have to make love to prove it. Through the communion of love, the truth would be made manifest.

I believe in God, all things are possible. Even the possibility of the communion of Keshi and Osinachi as star-crossed lovers.

Smile from your heart my love.

God bless.

Interesting post!

But, really, my understanding tells me that it's all about karma, as you have also mentioned.

Plus, it's not much of an issue, considering majority of people don't give a damn. Those who do, think for the good!

if rebirth is there..then why is population increasing?scratch scratch ! or is one area reducing and another increasing?

sittingnut said...

heyyy mate!

first i don't believe in rebirth. there are too many unanswered questions.
what exactly travels from one life to another? and how ? (do we have to by air tickets? :-) )
how does it (whatever it is ) store information about one life's deeds? (where is the suitcase? )
and what is the exact mechanism or law that categorize deeds? why is it not some other?
how did it all start?
why is that most rebirth stories come from sri lanka, india etc that believe in it ? while in the west there are more alien abduction stories, lol?
why is it that all these stories relate to humans? are only humans capable of rebirth?
what happened before there were humans?or other animals? or the big bang? and how does one explain population growth? or what happens if someone destroy the world? and the universe?

and i am sure i missed several other questions.

i personally think rebirth, like god, is a human invention to explain the world. since we for some reason want some kind of order in the world and cannot believe it is just meaningless chaos, we invent these supernatural things. and based on them we differentiate good and evil, life after death etc. so that we can feel comfortable.
so when we see 'bad' ppl doing well while 'good' suffer (as happens in the word) we explain that by saying it is the result of previous life or that its god's will and that everyone will get their 'just' deserts eventually.

anyway thats what i think.

hope you are having a great day.

~~Eclipsed_Thoughts

heyy thanks for that detailed explanation. I really liked what u said. Very clear and sensible.

**Have you ever thought of destiny?

yes Im a person who believes in Destiny. Only cos some real unbelievable things happen even thru me when I didnt even intend to do such things...I turn back and ask myself 'now wud I even do such a thing' or 'where did that come from'...

**Sometimes, we tend to think "we are free to choose, so what the hell is the destiny", but are we really free?

I always thought abt this. Ppl say we have the free-will but is it really their OWN free-will or something pre-written acting like it's our free-will? U know wut I mean na.

**To reach nirvana, you have to be free of everything, even yourself. When will that day come .. duh!!!

hehe yeah...when is the question.

**But until that day comes, we keep moving in circles, in the repeated cycle of life.

U used an interesting term there - 'cycle'. If u look at anything in this world, it's a cycle. Everything is in a cycle. So could birth and death of a person be the same?

**It is a recursive loop whole end has a condition "get free", and till we reach that condition,

hehe ur techie like me na? :) Good expression.

**It is a golden opportunity for anyone to get a life, thinking power, intellect, so why not make a step closer to freedom?

very true.

**Well, we have re-births, and though i dont have the proof, neither is it proved to me, i believe in it.

Solid proof is not always needed to believe...

**The question after that, what is nirvana? Does our soul travel beyond the universe after that? Or does it remain in the body itself.

I always thought abt that too. So what exactly is Nirvana? Does the energy just reside in harmony or is there a body involved? But if the body is involved, there cant be eternal peace. Thats what I think.

**Because being a science student, i also believe that energy can neither be destroyed nor created. And, "i" (it consists of our soul as well) is a bundle of energy.

So true. Thats what I mean. Where does this ENERGY go to when we die? That was my Qn to ppl who say there's no Rebirth. I should have included that bit in my post. Anyways :)

Thanks that was an awesome insight from u!

~~PradeepK

hey Praddy I liked ur ans. Matter, Energy, Illusion...tells me u r very knowledgable abt this topic in a very rational and scientific way. I learnt alot from ur comment..made me think heaps. Thanks for that!

**1. Science tells us that nothing is created or destroyed.

yes...so that means when we die, the energy must go somewhere na...

**What appears to be a point in one frame of reference, might indeed be a line from another dimension.

So true :)

**Time is only an illusion that we have adopted for our measuring convenience.

I got ya this time...it sure sounds very sensible to believe that Time in indeed an illusion.

**A different frame or dimension would offer a different perception, and would result in a different conclusion.

gotcha.

**I am a strong believer in Destiny. As such, I am rightly expected to think about rebirth. I do, but not in the conventional sense.

u believe in Destiny too? cool!

**In my opinion, birth and death are relativistic concepts. Nothing is created nor destroyed. Things just are, distributed in various forms of energy.

I can understant that very clearly now..especially after Niki's, Eclipsed's and ur comments, it's very clear.

**They are neither born, nor die. They exist. They change from one form to another. They evolve.

just like anything else ard us...this can also be thought as what the Buddha said...nothing is permanent in it's form. Including self.

**Therefore Karma is also an illusion.

yes I can u'stand that...but the power/energy in the deeds should be there somewhere na?

**Therefore, everything is permanent in one form or another.

permanent in existence but temporary in nature/form. Am I right?

**It is our awareness that tells us that we are. Remove awareness, and we will not know that we are.

As long as we have consciouness, it's gonna be very hard to remove awareness...but when we do, that's when u attain liberation isnt it? I wonder how I'd ever do that lol!

**It is our intellect that questions our being, or about our being again.

Intellect is very much a part of us that is superior to the mind...so it tells us what to do and how to do, isnt it?

**I have not heard anybody talk about people being reborn as an inanimate object - like a penstand, or a car.

well thats cos these r objects that Man make..isnt it?

**Nor have I heard of any person/persons being reborn as something intangible. Wonder why not!

thats a good Qn...

**In summary, we are neither born, nor do we ever die. We are. In one form or another. Whether we are aware of it or not. We are.

good analyis.

**And finally, only for those readers who may still not be able to agree that time is an illusion, I would put it this way, "We have been, are, and will be, albeit in different names and forms."

Terrific words! I love that.

Thanks so much Praddy ur so knowledgable wow!

oh ok. But d u ever think outside the bible? I dun mean to interfere with ur beliefs/faith, but Im just asking if u ever wonder abt alien theories. I mean I always took other faiths and analysed whatever they had to say cos we r free to do so na. And I must say I respect all faiths and I'm a strong believer in Christ and His Love and Sacrifices to our sins...d u believe that these sins may well be the Karma that Buddhists/Hindus talk abt? Just an observation.

not really Sittingnut. There are millions of Rebirth stories from ard the world, even the West. How could one not believe the blatant Truth? Nothing 'cool' about it, because I was destined to believe it. Moreover, even if I did not believe it, it would be there anyways.

**Therefore Karma is also an illusion.

yes I can u'stand that...but the power/energy in the deeds should be there somewhere na?

Not somewhere, but right here! The deed does not create any energy. It has always been here in a different form.

**Therefore, everything is permanent in one form or another.

permanent in existence but temporary in nature/form. Am I right?

My answer would be YES!

As long as we have consciouness, it's gonna be very hard to remove awareness...but when we do, that's when u attain liberation isnt it? I wonder how I'd ever do that lol!

Nah! Who told you that you will attain Liberation by detaching awareness? Awareness IS consciousness. Do you mean that all those unconscious people in the hospital are Liberated souls? Hardly, my dear! Salvation is just a state of extremely refined awareness; call it super-consciousness if you will. It is this refined awareness, which saves you from painful bondage.

Intellect is very much a part of us that is superior to the mind...so it tells us what to do and how to do, isnt it?

Intellect is a general mental capability that involves the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend ideas and language, and learn.

However, one must understand here that there are several concepts in the cosmos that one cannot comprehend by the aid of the intellect alone. While some ideas may be too complex for our intellect to handle by itself, some others are so simple that our intellect cannot work with them.

For example, when we look for "Intelligent Life" elsewhere in our universe, do we even know what signs we are looking for? We land up looking for symptoms of life as we know it, using our limited reason and logic to decide and judge. What makes us so sure that all life must be limited to show the symptoms as we know them? Why do we believe that there cannot be life outside the perimeters of our understanding? There could be "intelligent life" out there, which our intellect may not even recognize as "life".

**I have not heard anybody talk about people being reborn as an inanimate object - like a penstand, or a car.

well thats cos these r objects that Man make..isnt it?

Oh, you find that hard to believe because man made the penstands and the cars. Okay, did man make the the fire in the volcanoes, the water in the oceans, the grains of sand in the deserts, the mountains, the asteroids, the galaxies...?

Think about it, dear.

Dear Keshi, I am just an average man, with a simplistic vision. Thank you for giving me this platform to share whatever little I know.

Finally, please do not praise me. Praise Tathagatha. Praise The Buddha.

hi keshi.
A question for the ages that cannot be answered to the satisfaction of most people.

As a species our brain has developed incredible powers that modern science has only recently (last 200 years)begun to scientifically investigate.
In ancient times theories were developed to try to explain the inexplicable. Senseless tragedy was the most perplexing of issues.

Near and after death experiences are highly suspect. When a human body is shutting down an explosion of endorphins is released to ease the trauma. Visions of fond memories, past lives or dead loved ones are a byproduct of this natural high. There are a few hospitals that place non sensical messages on the top of Emergency Room equipment that only a patient floating above his body could read. So far none of them have passed this test.

Reincarnation would logically provide a plethora of near perfect souls who have migrated over the millenia to near perfection. There is no evidence that after hundreds of thousands of years of human existence any such group of karmic superbeings exist.

The little girl who feared the bridge may well have heard about the tragic story from others. There is usually a rational explanation for channeling the past and it is usually very suspect. In the end people believe what they WANT to believe. It is how many humans decide to cope with the uncertainties of LIFE.

Our fantastic minds create incredible things to decipher the mystery of this world. Unfortunately nobody has ever come back to tell us what really happens when we die.

This leaves you with two choices; choose empirical reasoning or imagination. Imagination is much more creative and rewarding. That's why so many of us want to believe that there is more than meets the eye.

A few of us are satisfied that somethings are unanswerable, however insulting that may be to our collective ego. We are content with knowing what probably DOES NOT happen judging by all of the available data.

Of course there are!

The thing is, I belive they can't be separated, and if they could, the result would be nothing like the whole thing. i.e.: if you separate them, you loose the original person, and get something else, something incomplete, something else..

I do believe in reincarnation. As to suffering there are so many different factors that go into why a given person suffers. But I can't agree with those who believe that persons who are being tortured in this life are all in that position because they did the same in a past life. Sometimes a person erroneously believes they must be punished for a perceived wrong and that punishment will take a severe form. Sometimes they are just in the wrong place at the wrong time. There is also free will involved on the part of the torturers. But even if some people who are currently in this predicament acted reprehensibly in a previous life, the only way to break the bad pattern is to refuse to involve ourselves in participation or self-righteous judgment and instead to react with compassion.
I am a very old soul who sometimes acts with dreadful immaturity to compensate!

heyy bday girl!

Cos it's against their belief so it wud be best for them to ignore it as rubbish
may be :-)
bt i think some one should do a proper scientific study first to check whether they are as common in other countries as in sl etc.

Ok so d u think ur meaningless chaos? That u senses dun mean anything? Think think..hehehe. They all have a meaning behind em dun they?
:-)
no i mean fundamentally there is no purpose for our existence. we may create meaning for our experiences etc. but ultimately there is nothing at all not even meaning.

There's Electricity behind that plug point, isnt there? When u take off the plug, does the Electricity die? And u cant see that Electricity but u do believe it exists dun u? :)
but electricity can be proved. and it behaves according to laws governing it. as i asked above what is the mechanism or law that govern rebirth?

anyway hope you are in a great party mood while you read this . :-)
btw one thing is certain birthdays and angels do exit.

Indeed an Intresting topic.I Came across your site again via Kumar.I am not much knowledgeable about rebirth theory in hinduism, all i know that hindus believe about seven janams(or forms).

As some of christian read made comment that christianity didnt have concept of rebirth. My religion also dont believe in rebirth at all.In short no Abrahamic faith believe in this concept. The reason to make comment on your post was your saying:

hen tell me why? I wanna know cos I can't understand why some good people suffer and some bad people never seem to suffer in this life. Not that I wish any person to suffer but it doesn't make sense when a good man dies young or falls sick and is not able to enjoy life, while some mean old loser lives a paradise of a life

Look keshi its very simple.Have you ever got chance to appear in some online test in school or somewhere else.?

If you ever notice or any other reader who would have appeared in such exams. The ratio of hard questions get increased if you dont give any wrong answer. If you keep giving wrong answers then the examinar(or the system) will keep asking you simple questions so that you earn some points.

If you are good student and facing tough questions, does that mean examinar is mean towards you? and if your friend who is dumb in studies getting simplest question, does that show she/he is favorite of examinar?

The teacher gives you tough question because He knows that you would go thru it unlike other dull students and it results you much good marks than others. The degree of arts and medicine cant be equal. One has to study a lot while choosing medical as profession.

Same concept works about our sufferings.Uusually if some good and noble person suffers more, actually he is being tested by God(teacher) by giving his tough question because teachers wants his student ahead than others.God doesnt hate His creature like teachers dont hate hi students.

hope i made some sense.

A wondrously open, bare-all, sensitive discussion initiated by you of an important question, Keshi.

Of course none of us are qualified to know, but only to ponder, and those who ponder are those with heart and curiosity and goodness.

We in North America, I believe, are the least imaginative (on the whole) about these questions because for the most part, our roots and history are in Europe.

Personally, I don't think reincarnation happens, but as I grow more spiritual and less religious, I don't discount it as a possibility either.

I went out with a woman for a couple of years who dabbles in all kinds of spirituality and she was quite convinced there is an after-life -- in fact a series of afterlives -- based on what kind of life you lived previously.

By the laws of science, I think it's improbable to expect that we can be reborn. But this question goes far beyond the realm of science and the sperm and the egg and natural selection.

I'm quite taken by Bhuddism and believe it's the highest of spiritual awakenings and awareness, more than any religion is.

But on this question, there can be no answer. I just figure it's best to live the life you're in the best way and most productive way you can, do the best you can for others and for yourself...

And hey, if we actually get another life after this to do it all again? Fantastic!

**but electricity can be proved. and it behaves according to laws governing it. as i asked above what is the mechanism or law that govern rebirth?

true but thats cos we defined electricity...but the energy in a human being could be far too much for our intelligence to define and come down to a scientific theory...not yet maybe.

Anyways thanks for ur sweet wishes - I had a blast :) How have u been? Anything new?

~~Adnan_Sidiqi

hey Adnan WB! I'm glad u came back to participate in my blog even after our differences in that Veil post. I'm glad u didnt take it personally and that u r intelligent and brave enough to discuss world matters without feeling so bad abt it. U r truly a gentleman, I respect u for that. Cos my own long-term muslim friends abandoned me after that post :)

well u gave a very good example of teacher and student...neat stuff! Thanks.

yes thats true...and like u say, it maybe cos it's beyond our capability as yet.

**I'm quite taken by Bhuddism and believe it's the highest of spiritual awakenings and awareness, more than any religion is.

true....Buddhism opens ur mind like the lotus petals open up and showers the world with the beauty it can hold. All religions do..if only we really grasp the beauty of the teachings and not create wars among us for being self-righteous.

**And hey, if we actually get another life after this to do it all again? Fantastic!

hehe why not ha? :) Well I'd prefer not to be born again but if I'm born again, then I'd like to be a flower in the garden of God.

Dear Keshi!

First of all thanks for such kind words.I was searching the comment sections to find out that whether some other "Adnan" is being addressed, hehe,in short your words re too much for me.I dont say things because someone praise,i follow wht my inner person commands me,some people like it while others not.

You asked:

true...but then when would God (our teacher) reward His good students?

Different timelines, again I wuold use same teacher/student example that some intelligent students re asked to appear in various levels of test while few are given marks after 1/2 levels. The *duration* is set by examinar not by student itself, its upto teacher when he rewards his student.

My personal experience,I was blessed many times by God right after few moments of *prayers*.Sometime i was blessed and rewarded after certain period of time. There are few prayers of mine which yet not fulfilled and I know why r prayers re delayed which i discussed before.

Once the imam of masjid gave very good example that kids at very younger age keep asking their dads to buy chocolates or any other thing they see on shops. While dads dont bring everything for their kids. Why?do they hate kids?No infact Dads know tht particular thing is harmful for the kid at that age. Some fathers save that money for sake of future.I as muslim believe that everyone is rewarded on earth whether hes muslim or non muslim.God is not violent that He just dont reward some good non-muslims.

Keshi said...

~~Adnan_Siddiqi

Hey Adnan twas my pleasure :)

That's a great ans...different timelines. It's quite clear now. U gave a great example for that too...abt dad not buying everything the kid asks for. Truly wonderful example...thanks a ton!

The doubt about rebirth is caused by the majority (99.99..%)not being in touch with the intutive self. Many of us have had some instances of 'deja vu' or gut-feel or unbelievable 'coincidences' that we remember for our lives. These instances make it possible for us not to discard the rebirth stories out of hand.
Till 1500's earth was the centre of the universe. Knowledge is expanding- lets see when we will understand 'life'.
For me, karma is more like a blue print for a physical life span - a goal that we are born with for this lifetime - set by ourselves. We have been empowered to lead each life as we want to. That gives us the capacity to be happy in diverse situations and environments and to fulfil our karma.

Keshi said...

~~Rajeev

WC Rajeev!

**not being in touch with the intutive self

thats true. I mean there has to be some real explanations to the DEJAVU feelings than to discard them as 'something weird so lets not worry abt em'.

**We have been empowered to lead each life as we want to.

so true!

Thanks for ur quite insightful view on this topic. I appreciate that.
