Virgin Updates

I went to a wedding on Sunday. Yes it was superb and extra 'bling-bling' an event cos it was a Sri Lankan Hindu wedding. So you could imagine all the colors, glamor and glitter of sarees and jewellery! Yes I wore a saree too (a mix of turquoise blue and champagne green) and guess what...while I had many kinds of fancy jewellery to go with it, I still wore my mum's ancient necklace and (jimki) ear-rings that matched it (this was the 3rd time I wore them). She wore them when she was in her 20s. I always had a love for old stuff cos there's something so precious and beautiful about them - maybe the sentimental value of such jewellery knowing that my granma made them for my mum. Anyways the wedding was absoloutely breathtaking. The mandap (altar where the bride and the groom sat) was simple yet so romantic - decortated with white, yellow and orange flowers and so full of grace, purity and magic. We were seated in the 3rd row so I got to witness the whole ceremony quite clearly and to detail. My favorite part was when the Hindu priest got the couple to exchange garlands 3 times and I thought they looked so cute doing that - like sweet little kids playing a game :). Anyways I had lots of fun in my saree, walking around feeling beautiful and graceful ;-) and most of all getting glances from some hunks, woohoo! Ok there was this one very good-looking dude that I had a glance or 2 at and guess what...later on when I went to serve myself some food, someone accidentally bumped on me from behind and we both turned to say 'Sorry'...and it was him (jaw-drop in my head) and I felt like that that bumping was indeed necessary and nothing to be sorry about lolz! Anyways we said Sorry and yes I moved on with my food and not with him, chill guys!

(Ok I know you're bored with my modelling pics but here
's one of me just before going to the wedding showing off my mum's pretty jewellery). One other thing I noticed about the Hindu wedding ceremony - the priest anounces that this virgin has been given in hand to this man now etc etc. I don't like that bit and I don't know why people still say such things in modern times. It belittles the bride somehow and I feel it's synonymous with considering the bride as a sex object - atleast that's what I think. I mean think about this...we are in the 21st century where both girls and boys have moved on from cave-men days, we are independent women/men and women's rights have come a long way. And Respect should come from both sides. So why include that bit still, as if this is about donating a virgin to a sex hungry man? What about him being donated to a woman, cos for all I know most men need a care-take lol! Anyways virgin or not, I despise that kind of vow which humiliates women and are still read out when that's not what love is all about! if I ever have a Hindu wedding, I'll make sure that bit is removed - hell yeah I will review every word (remember my recent wedding-vows post lol!). If my man or the priest objects, I'll dump them both. What I mean is love and marriage is not about virgins and human donations. It's about giving yourselves to each other just as you are. And when you do get married, make sure the vows are in synch with your thoughts and views. What other wedding vows (from your (/other) culture(s)) have you come across that make you wanna puke or sack the priest?

~~'Cause I am your lady (not your virgin)
And you are my man (not my master)
Whenever you reach for me (not when you smother me)
Ill do all that I can...
(we'll do whatever we both wanna do ok?)

:):)

First things first did u wear the saree in indian style or the srilankan way????

Now as far as those lines r concerned thanks for updating me coz i hv been to several marriages but never paid attention to those lines and as far as my marriage is concerned i misused my position and had the registrar in my drawing room with the marriage register holding others in the court for a good hour or so...
The rituals were pretty simple, we both signed on the register and an application form...lol, touched our parent's feet, hugged our friends, as far as the commitment between 2 of us, we already sealed that agreement with a kiss before starting for mumbai...lol, so u see it was so simple and without any controversy...lol

This reminds me of our wedding vows..they are sooo outdated!!!...They have stuff like "the girl will never leave the house without informing /taking permission from the husband"...CRAP!...was soo meaningless and irrelevant in today times!
We both were literally laughing during the vows and the priest was amused!

Would you buy a car without a test drive? No.
Aside from mastering the simple mechanics of lovemaking there has to be a little something extra. Otherwise it is just sex. That being said there are times when married people just have sex but that isn't what is going to keep them together. It is those knock your socks off swinging from the chandelier events that make your head spin that keep you from wandering off.
Today we all know that making love is not exactly how it looks in the movies and Rapper videos.

Portraying women as virtual orgasmotrons that only require a few seconds of kissing while ripping off their clothes is drilled into the minds of young men on a daily basis. Unfortunately some guys cannot seem to get past the 3 minute hero stage because of all of this disinformation. They need to be trained and it is a good idea to find out if they have the capacity to take instruction before you say I do.

and speaking of virgins..Comedian Bill Maher was talking about how pathetic it was to seduce suicide bombers with the notion that 72 virgins are waiting for them on the other side. Maher said that he would trade all 72 virgins for 1 pro. He then listed all of the time and energy that would be saved trying to coax any of the virgins to try to perform certain things that the pro already knew.

Where the hell am I going with this anyway. Oh yeah I think that the notion that the woman should be a virgin is hypocritical and as Bill Maher has pointed out, not really a great idea anyway. Men who need to OWN penis receptacles are more interested in their own pride and should just buy inflatable wives.

Love is giving not taking.
and so ends todays sermon....

Women in silk saree n jwellery ... the scene luks like godesses r walking down on earth :)

** that bumping was indeed necessary

u mean intended n not accidental ;) ... Y did ya say sorry when u hit that guy ... that was disastrous ... u should have just walked away with a smile :p

now this proves KESHI = IRRESISTIBLY blah blah blah ... he he ;)

** virgin has been given in hand to this man now

proly a misinterpretation :-? ... if I remember right its called 'kanya dhaanam' (kanya usually associated with being virgin) ... coz the father who takes care of his daughter now gives that responsibility to the groom to love n care for her forever henceforth ... doesn't this sound like women are r gift from god to be treasured ... so the msg is lost in time

but if its a perfect arranged marriage (@least these days) then I feel like its legal brothal ... no offence, but it usually happens when a guy n gal can't wait anymore to get laid ;))

I don't think vows were ever meant to be demeaning ... to whatever ends I'v heard of it ... its an open proclamation and a promise with fire and the junta as evidence

in fact in earlier days there was a short ritual where they ask the bride and the groom to bear that wooden stuff used on bullock-carts ... the burdensome wooden thingy that goes onto the shoulder of the bullock's ... signifying that the bride and groom shall help each other with the burden of life together

I think the hindu's marriage n celebration festivities are crazy, fun n profound in meaning ... be it the chanting, the funny games played, old mami's throwing the colour laddos all over ;)) ... of course the chance to see the lovely gals in distant relations / friends

I don't think any aspect of the vows mean the way you interpreted negatively ... just not conveyed in the right manner I'd presume :)

Though its a sick old tradition, it is still seen everywhere.... yucks!!
If ever my husband is gonna make my dad or anyone do that, i will beat the shit out of him....

Your mom's jewellery though not very clear does look nice and minimal and you look nice in them.

About hindu weddings, I had a south indian hindu wedding and to be honest I really didn't notice what the priest was saying, I was too immersed in my husband's eyes and in my dreams ;-)
There was one ceremony though that irritated both me and my brother. Basically the groom and bride's brother are made to enact a scene wherein the groom is determined to take sanyas or permanent bachelorhood. The bride's brother has to then change the groom's mind and tell him how nice his sister is, how well she can cook, how obedient she is.....and what not.....and then the groom changes his mind and arrives to the mandap.

Ok then bye for now, have a good day

Okay all my comments one by one (take a deep breath, relax and sit back) :-P:

1. You look absolutely stunning in this picture.

2. How can be so dumbo :-D? You find a hunk, bump into him and still walk away from him........ggggggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.......what were you thinking?

3. If you plan to get a Hindu wedding, then make sure that you don't do it in India - because you wouldn't find a priest who wouldn't say such things. Moreover those and other rubbishes like your husband is your guardian and etc will be uttered in Sanskrit with a heavy accent - too difficult to follow.

4. I don't like this part of western marriage when the priest (or whoever) says to the man, "do you take her as your wife?" and to the woman, "do you take him as your man?" Why she becomes his wife but he becomes her man and not her husband?????????????????????????? Though these utterings are changing, but in many many cases, those traditional words are uttered.

5. This song of Celine Dion is one of my favorite :-D.

Very true! thats a bad tradition that people hold on to these days! I'm not sure if I've heard like anything(abt viriginity) that in Hindu weddings. But as far as I know, they tie the know before the fire - where the groom takes a vow " That as long as this fire remain I shall like, the fire be pure in my heart and live passionately with my girl" Hey, BTW Power of love is one of my fav. songs from Celine - oh boy what an amazing voice she has got! Another very interesting post from your side Keshi. I have never been to a hindu wedding and now I am thinking to attend one. One of my students is Hindu and she is getting married soon I will ask her to invite me. :) Jimki is earrings. In urdu do you know we call it jhumka. You look stunning in the pic. Let the priest sing the song at your wedding, She is his lady and he is her man..:)

WithinWithout said...

Yeah, Keshi, we're all SO tired of seeing your pictures. Can you stop that please?

The idiocy of what the priest said about the virgin...is pure lunacy and makes a joke out of the whole ceremony.

Unless, of course, the woman was actually a virgin and she did actually want those words read.

I suspect it was the priest or parents who wanted that said, whether it's true or not.

You'll pardon, I hope, my cynicism about marriage as an institution and the vows that accompany it.

In North America, anyway, the divorce rates are at about 50 per cent. So marriage vows are no promise of anything, although I still believe in marriage and deep love between a man and a woman.

If I get married again, I and my wife-to-be will dictate what is said and what isn't. And it won't be a religious ceremony.

Now, on to the final topic: that was it with the hunk in the dinner lineup? A "bump" in the night?

Nothing happened after that? More discussion? An exchange of phone numbers? Nada? Girl, go for it!

I'm sure you looked ravishing in your sari. I brought one back for each of my three sisters from India many years ago.

AnonymousBlogger said...

Oh Keshi, you should have moved in on that guy. I'm sure he bumped you on purpose just to get your attention!

I agree with your views on those stone-age views some people still have. It's a shame, but I think they are slowly fading away with the new generations.

sittingnut said...

agree with you about the wording. it is degrading to women.
catholic wedding service has got rid of ' to obey ' part in the vows? i actually don't know but don't remember hearing it in weddings i attended. don't understand what is being said in poruwa weddings here.

personally i would prefer my wedding( if i get that silly ) to be just the registration at the registrar of marriages. but i suppose the prospectives wife would have something to say on that .
imo the best wedding i attended was such a registration after an elopement. i was a witness. wedding reception, so to speak, for 6 ppl including the couple was held in my room at the time. it was so romantic :-)
actually they had a big party a month later. and everybody, parents and all, has since reconciled and the couple is doing extremely well.

hope you are having a great day.

I disagree on how it belittles a bride. It is not about what century we are in, it is about custom.

If you dont like the custom, just dont follow it. Changing it to way you like is like creating a new custom. You cannot have best of both the worlds. Either be in it or get into western culture.

Old as it may sound, but after staying in midst of all western culture, I really feel the old culture is not as bad as I thought. Just as the western culture is not glamour all the way as I thought from other side.

Respect, I do agree, should come from both sides. But that does not seem to be happening. Most of the time in name of equality, I see women taking advantages. I have seen many of my friends being joroo ka gulam. Where is the equality there?

I know no one asked, but my wedding vows will be as they are. Editing strictly not allowed.

Vivhyd said...

that was funny - the vows thing.. but leave the vows thing - as long the couple has a gr8 marriage life overriding the differences and helping each other - everything is taken care of.. its one thing to have vows like we will be together till death do us apart and then divorcing in 1 yr.. like it happens in the west..

Your comment about 'virgin bride' made me laugh!

Trust me, if you have a hindu wedding, you will be sooooo tired and boooored of all these petty details, that you will simply say 'For goddamn sake say whatever you wanna say quickly as i want to get married and spend time with my man' LOL

btw, some people still live in cave man era ;-), and apparently they are too busy to come out of physics, programming and gaming. LOL

~~Starry_Nights

**Maybe that hunk will call u up sometime.

aww Starry tnxx for hoping for me...but I guess it was just a passing-by hunk :)

**Anyway coming back to weddings do they really proclaim the woman to be a virgin. I just thought they assumed that, even if she was not.

no they use the term 'Kanya/Kanni' as the girl's parents hand over their daughter to the groom. That assumes she's a virgin yeah.

**I really dont like the obey part in the vows. Its like being a slave.

lol yes I know.

**I will honor and trust but dont know about obey, thats why I get into a lot of trouble in my marriage.somehow cant do that.

haha ur cute Starry. Ur right...obeying is like being a bloody slave. It's really more of trusting and respecting than obeying.

~~Lil _kath

Kathhh mwahhhhhhh!

**send me ur pic. Kesh plssss!

I will..thru email.

**yeah, and its my first time to hear about that sweetie, what about if the girl is not a virgin anymore? u mean she cant marry anyone?

hehe good point. My mum says that girls who r not virgins are usually not supposed to get on the sacred altar. It's a Hindu tradition. But how do we even know if the girl is a virgin? If she's not, then all those vows r empty words!

**so again its all about religion! well, we cant do anything about beliefs etc...

yes but times surely have changed. So should the vows.

**when u bumped w/ that guy hehe... then what happened next? did u talked? or just said bye after saying sorry both??

~~Within Without

heyy WW hows it going?

**Yeah, Keshi, we're all SO tired of seeing your pictures. Can you stop that please?

lol ok ok.

**The idiocy of what the priest said about the virgin...is pure lunacy and makes a joke out of the whole ceremony.

yes especially in this century.

**Unless, of course, the woman was actually a virgin and she did actually want those words read.

na it's traditional vows that hardly get changed by anyone.

**So marriage vows are no promise of anything, although I still believe in marriage and deep love between a man and a woman.

true.

**If I get married again, I and my wife-to-be will dictate what is said and what isn't. And it won't be a religious ceremony.

good on ya!

**Now, on to the final topic: that was it with the hunk in the dinner lineup? A "bump" in the night?

lol yes and a cool bump too ;-)

**Nothing happened after that? More discussion? An exchange of phone numbers? Nada? Girl, go for it!

nope :( mebbe he's got a GF already...well anyways Im the shy kind when it comes to these matters. I always wait for the guy to make the first move. U know, waiting for the sun to shine on me than making the sun shine on me hehehe...I know Im dumb :(

hello :)

**It is not about what century we are in, it is about custom.

I disagree with u on that :) Cos while I know it's also abt the custom and not ONLY abt the century, it is also abt making sense. We cant blindly follows age-old customs just cos it was carried out for years. Can we?

**If you dont like the custom, just dont follow it.

and thats what im saying :) I wont follow it.

**Changing it to way you like is like creating a new custom. You cannot have best of both the worlds. Either be in it or get into western culture.

Why not create a new custom? If we can change the ways we dress, think etc to suit the times, why not change few customs too? Especially customs that humilate ppl. And I believe we can get the best of both cultures. That's what good-living is all abt. Pick the best ones from both sides. Arent most of us doing that already?

**Old as it may sound, but after staying in midst of all western culture, I really feel the old culture is not as bad as I thought.

ur rigght to a certain extent...but we cant bury ourselves in old customes that mock individuals and ones that dun make sense anymore.

**Just as the western culture is not glamour all the way as I thought from other side.

its not...so is our culture. There r good and bad in both cultures. Thats why we should pick the best ones from both sides.

**Most of the time in name of equality, I see women taking advantages.

And how does that apply in this case?

**I have seen many of my friends being joroo ka gulam. Where is the equality there?

wuts that? Sorry I didnt u'stand that Hindi term...plz explain further.

**I know no one asked, but my wedding vows will be as they are. Editing strictly not allowed.

** lol na...we both 'accidenttally' bumped on each other. Serious!

maybe u did, but maybe he didn't :D

** Back then women didnt have much rights and they were treated as some religious donation to men.

did u know that women were equal to men long ago in every aspect, n they even learnt vedas alongside men n participated in all activities equally? it was sometime in b/w (modern times) that the manudharmam sprang up n made a mess of things :(. wonder where u got that idea that of women considered low #-o

** D u honestly like that term 'Kanni' being used in today's weddings?

its not a question of liking/disliking it nut, its about understanding what was said bout the institution long long ago

to me every custom has a positive and profound purported meaning which was lost in time, distorted by narrow minded individuals ... so I see things with a positive spirit ... n dump the rest

btw kanni is kinda like the word chiquitita ;)

** I think it's pretty dumb and it sure demeans women of today - may not have been so in those days. And thats what I meant.

scriptures don't change just coz u dun like the choice of words :) ... scriptures n those who wrote em can't help if people who preach them misinterpret it

maybe the priest enunciated it with that tone ... its the very feeling of being heving been treated in a demeaming fasion thats 1/2 reason for y its so ... its like u r what u think u r :)

I hate it when certain weddings take days to complete all the rituals. It should not exceed an hour.

I hate the "Virgin" declaration part. So much for enforcing the male chauvnism. How come the priest doesnt say the same about the guy, or no one cares?

Oh, and some of the customs specify you wear the palloo over your right shoulder and others specify you wear it over the left.

Try out as many styles as you can and you'll have some REAL fun with a saree. You can also try the sexy look by tying the loer end lower than your low-waist jeans. He he...look at the guys ogle then [;-)]

You probably haven't read the translation of Manu Dharma Sastra, the official Dharma all Hindus are supposed to live by. It tells people to treat women worse than dogs. Even though Vedas at places said women are like Gods etc. but in general the Hindu mythology does not give equal rights to women. (I mean God Rama asks Sita to burn herslef to prove that she is pure. It is unthinkable that a woman could ask the same thing of a guy). There are so many examples like that.

Also the entier marriage ceremony dates to the time when women were bought and paid for by in terms of cattle and grain. The ceremony has several remnants of that.

Oh by the way, I was raised a Hindu but now I chose not to have a religion.

No matter where a womn hails from a sari has to suit her.
Wedding vow...??
Not much on that.
More than being faithful I seek understanding and being able to get along worst possible times.
A smile every time I think of her is the key. :)
