A Better Death

I'm sure many of you have seen this pic before. This is a pic of a man jumping out of the World Trade Center on that fateful day (9/11/2001) in New York. Back then this picture had me in total shock for months and even now I still haven't gotten used to it. Everytime I look at this pic, I feel a fresh sadness for that man (and the the rest of 200+ men and women who were forced to jump to their deaths that day). This pic is a very special pic in the sense that alot of journalists later tried to find out the identity of this person but didn't really succeed. More than that, what this pic tells me is whoever it is, he shows true courage and grace even at the hands of death. Look at the way he is falling. So quiet, peaceful, full of grace and strength. It's not what death is portrayed to be. We all have this fear within us when we hear the word 'Death'. But he doesn't seem to be fearing death, neither is he screaming or struggling. He's just quiet and down he goes, down, down, down to the hands of something that'd handle him 'better' than the raging fires inside the building. He still shows hope, absolute stillness and a 'better' choice of death for him at that point of time. I know that there are(were) many people who suffer(ed) around the world because of terrorism but this kind of death is beyond imagination. Where one is forced to commit suicide! I find it difficult to even imagine his horror and pain when he had to make that ultimate decision of his life, perhaps within 10 or 15mins and that too just to die?? Just imagine facing a situation like this where you're being 'executed' (for nothing) and you only get the choice of the way you die (as if that's any comfort). I think in that kind of situation I too would have done what he did 'cos I don't want to burn alive. Human courage is immeasurable. What would you have done if you had no way out of that building that day?

Since it's getting close to the rememebrance of that fateful day and it's many victims, I'd like to dedicate this post to all innocents who perished on 9/11...to all those who had nothing to do with this stupid war but had to pay the ultimate price for it...to all those who's cries went unheard till their last breath...to all those who left their loved-ones behind right in front of their eyes...and to Joanne Ahladiotis. I know Joanne's cousin and we became friends after 9/11. I had to reach out to someone, to share their pain so Joanne was my choice. Joanne was only 27 and worked as a Systems Analyst for eSpeed, Cantor Fitzgerald on level 104- similar to what I do and her personality sounded alot like mine too. She left her beloved mother and sister behind. Apparently on that day staff at her office were getting retrenched . She had told her mum the night before that she was in fear of losing her job. Instead she died that day. Life is as fragile as that drop of water hanging from a leaf. The sun and the moon are forever but you and me are not. Never forget that Joanne was here.

It was shocking, wasn't it? I woke up to newspapers with horrific photos splashed on the 1st page. I thought there was some new movie coming out. That day, everyone in school was passing round newspapers and ignored the lecturers. Now, we are still facing the impact of that 1 fateful day. I hope people do sober up.

Seeing that man falling to his death is so heartbreaking!
But, it was his choice to die this way. Was it as act of bravery...
I do not know.
We will never know what prompted him to jump... maybe fear of dying in a raging fire!

I myself do not think I would have jumped! I would be keeping hope alive till the last second that I might be rescued!
I do believe people were comforting each other with the hope they were going to be rescued.
Sadly hope was in vain for all the
magnificent people that lost their lives on 9/11.

I Have a book that has a picture of nearly every victim of 9/11.
When I look at their faces, I am so overwhelmed with sadness!
Bless them all... and bless all the loved ones that lost so many
precious friends and family members!
Feeling very sad at this moment!

"Back then this picture had me in total shock for months " How often do we remember that picture any more ? Its not about you.. but in this fast world.. human life is facing deflation (as against inflation) and becoming cheaper by the day..
Especially in poorer countries in Asia, such deaths, terrorist attacks etc are forgotten within a week..

I wish we could chose our deaths.. would have been interesting..
But the surprise in death, like in life makes life more interesting..

I guess there is some reason why its best that we forget the past.. because today is here to live and tomorrow has more to offer

Keshi,
I havent seen that pic before. I feel its because of the gravity pull, it looks graceful.

Although, most of us fear death, it is a part of life, though sadly it is the end of our life and the last point of our quest for wisdom.
Though i believe that there is more to life, after death.

I saw that picture before and i thought it was the best a man could do for himself before dying... even i wuld have jumped coz i am too scared of being burnt alive.... the fear of fire is worse than fear of height for me... afterall we are gonna die anyways, isnt it?

terrorism is something which everyone hates. i have never been able to understand what is the hwole point in "freeing" people or bringing a revolution in the world when the human beings are killed in thousands? Its everywhere....

okay, since you have put up this post, i think now i will watch the vidow of "wake me up when september ends" by greenday!!

I'm sure suicide is always the wrong decision. But maybe in a situation like that it's different. Hmmm, maybe...

gP said...

the human courage, certainly during testing times we bond together or as individuals we strive for solutions. But more than that in times of despair, the solution comes out of the box. Maybe we would have fallen into a heap of something and survived. So its not a suicide, but a run for freedom and for survival. Amazing what the human mind can do and achieve.

Your 6 degree connection is amazing. its a big pity that most of the foreginers who died in the tragedy was forgotten except for americans. Its true, there was a Malaysian too, and the person was forgotten. Then why did America rally such a big force and throw tantrum when it was clearly for political motives. And innocent people like joanne had to die because of overzealous generals and presidents. Pity.

Sweet Keshi,
The blood of the innocent cries out for justice.

The murderers are still unrepentant, because these devils have continued to attack and murder more innocent people.

And until Muslims all over the world condemn and join us to track down and arrest the other Islamic terrorist suicide bombers, I will condemn all Muslims as equally guilty as Osama bin Laden and all their fellow agents of Satan in the masquerade of religion.

Do you know that surveys have shown that majority of Muslims all over the world approved of what their evil brothers did on 9/11 and went ahead to encourage them to attack and bomb London on July 7, 2005?

How can a religion that claims to be of God approve of the Satanic attacks of 9/11, London 7/7 and others and they are still unrepentant?

Islam is not of God.
Any religion that approves of the murder of the innocent and continues to hide the murderers is of the devil. And I shall make sure that evil religion is totally destroyed so that the innocent shall be saved and there will not be another 9/11, London 7/7 and these devils will no longer have the power to terrorize us again.

Those who don't want others to live in peace, don't deserve to live.

May God comfort the bereaved colleagues, friends, relations and families of all those killed on 9/11 and other terrorist attacks all over the world.

God bless.

How I remember that day......it was only yesterday even tho in just a few days it will be five years. I remember I was at work and one of my friends/co-workers was listening to radio and the radio station was interupted. A plane had just crashed into the world trade center and then another. We had no TV that was available to us...and then my boss finally turned on the little 13 inch in her office. I remember Katie Couric and Matt Lauer giving us the latest. I was so scared, so paniced, so grief stricken, so shocked, so freaked, so sad, so mad, so confused, so helpless.
I turned to God. I slept with a light on. I thought it was the beginning of the end of the world.
I cried for a month. I knew no one personally but yet I knew them all. They were my brothers and my sisters. They died for my country.

Everytime I enter a stairwell, I think of all those that day who tried to escape and perished.

I don't think there is a day now that I don't take my freedom for granite. I still don't feel completely safe. And then just so very recently those terrorists were soiled from their airplane stealing, bomb planting attacks.

I am so lucky, so blessed-hense my blog name, Blessed. That name is becuz of 9/11 and my love of the Lord and how very lucky and fortunate I am indeed.

Your pic of the man falling-it's terrifing. What would I have done?
Would I have even lived to try to flee? Would I have sat there to burn or be crushed in a crumbling building? Would I have ran to the millions of stairs? I don't believe I would have jumped. I think I would have sat there and cried tears that I had never cried.
Tears of absolute terror. And I probably would have died.

God bless all those heroes. All those whose names I do not know but know they were my family.

Blessings to you Miss Keshi and your soul searching/soul delving blogs.

I am not sure what would go through my mind in that situation.
I hate tall buildings to begin with. I hope that I never find out.

I often wonder how many more people will die the next time a low flying plane enters a heavily populated area. The Air Force will probably just shoot it down and ask questions later.

This reminds me that Bill Maher had his Politically Incorrect show cancelled because he said that it took courage for those young men to fly the planes into the buildings. It is arguable that religious fanaticism is a form of mental instability but those men actually convinced themselves that they were doing a great thing. Despite all evidence to the contrary they believed that their GOD would be pleased with their courageous sacrifice. How dumb is that?
This world is full of other CRAZY people and somewhere, someone is dreaming up and planning another horrible idiotic plan to kill innocent lives for their version of God.
Anyone still preaching this hatred (and there are plenty) should be ejected from the free world and sent home in a cage.

Please, please, please world..open up your history and science books and THINK about the reality of the Why,How,& When we evolved to Where we are today! We may never know Who dreamed up the whole thing beyond the Big Bang but if you are a theist it is safe to assume that blowing each other up in office buildings was not a part of the original plan.

Hey Babe, This is perhaps the best post that I've read on any site. You really caught me off guard today. Excellent post. I remember exactly where I was at when I heard that the first tower had been hit. It's like an earlier generation who still say they remember where they were when John F. Kennedy was shot. It's burned into our memories. Here's some irony for you. I was engaged to get married on the 14th of September 2001 in New York. My brother and I couldn't wait to get there to trek around the towers. We scheduled a week in the Big Apple from the 9th to the 16th. Luckily for me about a month before the wedding she left me. I was devastated... but in retrospect.. I still wonder where I would have been on that day. .. oh and .. the best part of the story? she was sleeping with a married guy.. his wife caught them and threw him out. Homerun for me!!! Missin ya ;)

yes isnt that so naive and unfair to use such methods to prove a point to the govts? In that process so many innocents have to sacrifice their lives!

~~RandomThoughts

hey Im fine ty sweety. Just wanted to post something that has been on my mind since 9/11. These victims and their families.

yes I spoke to Joanna's cousin. She was so happy that someone all the way from Aus reached out to her. She was totally broken-hearted and apparently she was the closest to Joanne. She wrote me long emails after that and told me everything abt Joanne. And that she dreamt of Joanne recently. She thanked me so much for being with her at a time she needed to say to ppl (strangers) what/who Joanne was - how priceless her existence was.

**...n its sad n pathetic tht such an incident only could wake up the world community

ur right. Sri Lanka knew terrorism for 20+ years and no one cared. Suicide terrorism was a daily thing in SL (and in India too). But no one cared cos we were developing countries. but hey when it happened in NY, it was a big thing...cos that's when some ppl even realised that there's indeed something called suicide terrorism! Sad indeed.

Yep Amy Lee's lil sis died. I didnt she wrote this song for her. Now this song has more meaning for me...thanks Desperado!

~~Ghee

hey Ghee tnxx! I got ur earlier comment in my prev post and I replied :) ty!

~~Yashita

**if the truth of life is death, then why do we fear death?"

yes but why we fear it is cos we dunno what's after death..the unknown scares us. We r so used to Life that Death sound so final...and that scares us. And a forced death like this guy's death is even more frightening.

~~Sudeep

Respect and honer r the words. Cos they faced the ultimate battle of their lives.

** if it stares u in ur eyes then sure any strong person will fall on his/her knees

so true. But this guy (and 200+ others) did something most of us will fear more than death alone. Jumping from that high a building, knowing they r gonna crash to their deaths.

~~Parag

hey Parag!

**How often do we remember that picture any more ?

I rem these victims very well and no I will never forget.

I know that we must look to the future but past is what has made us who we r today. So we cant forget the past entirely. From time to time, we must take a peek.

~~Alex

** I feel its because of the gravity pull, it looks graceful.

not really...cos I watched a documentary on ppl who jumped that day. This man was one of the very few who had stayed in that position till he crashed to his death. His many pics at many heights of the fall was shown. He was going down just like that except when he was reaching the bottom he took of his white-shirt. Can u believe that.

Others have been screaming as they fell and some others were holding hands as they jumped! I watched the entire documentary with very heave tears.

Im not sure what's after death...but I hope there's something lovely after death. For the beautiful ppl who didnt get to live here too long.

~~Eclipsed_Thoughts

yes I rem that day...I had just come back from gym and at infront of the PC for something, and there it was all over ther net!

**I saw that picture before and i thought it was the best a man could do for himself before dying...

yes ur right. Some ppl will fear it but I think it's the best he could do to himself at that time. I wudnt wanna burn alive either.

terrorism is a f#cked up technique to send msgs to govts. I wish ppl had more brains.

btw I love that song by Green Day.

~~Die_Murane

Suicide is not always wrong. Every person has his/her explanation that no one else would be able to u'stand, unless they themselves r in that situtaion.

~~Ghost_Particle

Ghosty heyyy!

**So its not a suicide, but a run for freedom and for survival.

yes one can see it in that light too...maybe he thought he's escape somehow. Also maybe its his way of saying 'im not gonna let u kill me, I'll die the way I want'...

I know that many ppl from many lands died in those towers. I read almost every person's profile when this happened. So many Indians who worked at WIPRO died too. But the US gives her man/woman the first recognition and we have to u'stand that Ghosty. Cos it happened in NY, the majority of victims were their men/women and it was clearly an attack against the white Americans (tho our ppl and many others became victims of it simply by being at the wrong place at the wrong time). But all suffered equally yes.

~~Orikinla_Osinachi

hey Ori hows u? Hope ur feeling better today.

**Do you know that surveys have shown that majority of Muslims all over the world approved of what their evil brothers did on 9/11 and went ahead to encourage them to attack and bomb London on July 7, 2005?

OMG did they say that? I cant believe that but then I can. Cos most muslims fail to prove to me that JIHAD is plain wrong. I just cant u'stand why even good muslims fail to explain that to me.

~~Dumbdodi

yes sweety...9/11 was a starting point for so many other unnecessary deaths too. And it was also the beginning of a huge change in the view towards certain races and religions. The world became more racist.

**Napolean said that sometimses it takes more courage to live than to die.

I honor that statement. Yes sometimes life can be demanding than death. And no 2 ppl will handle the same situation in the same way. SOme can live thru it, and some cant. So we should never judge.

I can be very spiritual Hiren. D u know I'm also a lead singer at a spiritual society here in Syd :)

~~Fleiger

**Seppuku

whats that?

**He/she is better off as a faceless, nameless victim of terrorism, rather than just a person who jumped to death.

Spot on! Thats what I said too as I was watching the documentary. Some journalists tried to find out his identity. From analysing his clothes they thought he's sure to be a worker from the Windows of the world restaurant. And that he was a non-white American - either Spanish or Black. Apparently there were 2 such ppl working at the restaurant. They even traced the families. But how can anyone say who he was. cos the distance was too much to track the exact identity.

I say he's the personification of courage and grace in the face of death.

~~Sush

**"the sins of a parents bestowes their wards"

I dunno if that's true. No one knows.

Keshi.

Known Stranger said...

thatz how the saying goes...

" rajanin pizhaigal avan makkallai vattum"

the subject suffer for the mistakes of the king is the meaning.

do you read tamil by the way - i doubt you are either cyelon tamil origin or tamil origin.

Keshi said...

thats what the books say...that doesnt mean it's the truth KS.

Keshi.

Known Stranger said...

It is true dear. A mistake of a kind costs a whole kingdom. recent history doesnt make the saying true. You have plenty of evidence that happenign right before eyes... a simple mistakes costed many of their children.... let us no go back to bc or early ad' just in 21st century and late 20th century are the evidence after we are born...

History books write the truth with okie some imagination and fantacies.

what you sow is what you reap.

Keshi said...

I dun see the truth in that way. Cos thats generalisation based on few events KS.

Keshi.

Known Stranger said...

the universe rule isnt it that the king's or the country head's decision affects his country men. are you sure it is a generalised statment. isnt it the good decision fetches the people good and a worse decision of his makes his subjects sufffer.

if you say it is generalised statment - i back of on this topic....

I think i make a sense in this atleast.. normaly i speak stupid - hardly i say soemthing sense and that is also you had told it is generalised.. okie...

when a woman say so - i heed.

Keshi said...

KS thats true. But what I meant was abt how u said that children suffer cos of parents' deeds. It's not always the case. The individual is responsible too.

Keshi.

Known Stranger said...

in my view - need not be right (but i feel i am nto wrong) - self declaration first before i share my views.

ofcourse you are right that a individual person is responsible for the deed -but a deed of a parents or a forefather can certainly affect the growing up of a children -

a small example - if a father is pretty indulged in gambbelling ( i am very typically comparign in the Indian society - not with other lands as my exposure is little) and the family is left to no care - the children gets affected - the way the parents deed certainly affect the generation down the line. A simple example - a well do mirasuthar family of olden zaminthar aristocrate family has one fore father who had been just a casanova and been flirting around with woman keeps the tag name branded till the great grand children with the infamous surname - he cannot do anything about it but jus thave to accept - ofcourse - the individual can make it change with his sheer detetmination yet - what the tag he gets while he grow cannot be done anything..

A rapist son - certainly when in society grows up - you cannot stop others influencing him with his fathers deed.

A philanthrophist son certainly have a virtue of respect in the society of his fathers deed.

A magistrate son would be always reffered with a honour in the place he grows up...

A big dept left by a father is certainly on the shoulder of the son or daughter ( let me give equal respect)

a big wealth earned by father if he doens leave a will on some one else - certainly the deed of earning money bestows to his children...

a small deed of a grandfather of 1920's in india going to british land ( that time - india is a part of british and need no visa - it was a british passport) had changed the life style of the next generation while his peers of cousins and own blood may be a popur in indian .

Certainly the deed or a sin of parents carry down to the children
you cannot avoid it - ofcourse the individual can change it

when wealth of a parents is inhireted the sin also gets passed on..

i DONT KNOW IF YOU are convinced in my view - i may not be right but wont easily give up to accept i am wrong that it is only bookish words.

I will respect your view that you consider it is not true - wont show the impulse that i am right. i would prefer to be humbel and say - may be i not right but i am not wrong in my view

Keshi said...

I see what u mean KS...but they r all individual stories. I used to believe in that b4 (like u do) but not anymore. Cos I see a whole lot of good parents with bad kids and vice versa. So to me, eventually it's to do with the individual.
