The Original You

I had a shitty weekend. Major argument on Sat and decided I wont go to this musical concert on Sun - doesn't matter if I lose my $80 on it, I JUST WONT GO. Some people just don't know how to talk and don't know their limits with words. Such words are lethal to the system. So yeah I wont go. When I'm affected I'm affected so let me be. Till you realise what you said was plain cruel and downright ugly, I won't ever talk to you again. Don't always expect me to be a puppet on strings. This time I just cut the strings and now I'm lifeless in your play. Get that.

Now to the post. How do you usually indentify/introduce yourself? Doesnt matter who the audience is, just imagine this situation. You are given a microphone to say who you are. Alot of people will start with their origin - fair enough you've got to cherish where you come from. But are you really only that or many more? One of my friends always say 'I'm an Indian girl, very traditonal, I have a culture to preserve...etc' and I used to ask her this. Shelby are you really all Indian? Cos we are in this imaginary world sometimes forgetting the fact that though we are Indian/Sri Lankan/Chinese/English/Aussie/Canadian etc by origin, that we are really many more than just that. Have a look at this example of an Indian girl. Since the day she is born, she is brought up to believe that she is 'Indian'. That's true, by birth she is Indian. And she lives learning the Indian traditions and ways. But deep down she can have many other characteristics that may not necessarliy fall under the label 'Indian'. Is that a crime? I think not. Cos that's who she is. I'm a simple Sri Lankan woman when I'm in a Buddhist temple, I'm a fun-loving American woman when I'm at the pub with friends, I'm a sport-loving Aussie woman when I'm singing 'Waltzing Matilda' at the Olympics with friends, I'm a seductive Arabic woman when I do belly-dancing with my Turkish friends, I'm a family-loving Greek woman when I watch TV with my mother and aunt instead of going out with the boys, I'm a fashionable Italian woman when I fall in love with Dolce and Gabbana, I'm a gracfeul Indian woman when I wear the saree and light the lamp, I'm a hardworking Asian woman when I'm at work earning my dough, I'm a daring English woman when I'm bush-walking in the loneliest forests, I'm a tough African woman when I'm facing the harshest droughts in life, I'm a Russian ballerina when I put my dancing shoes on, I'm a sexy Brazilain woman when I'm at the beach in my cossies, I'm the carefree Islander woman when I'm with nature. I have every trait and I'm every woman. What matters is being who you are, not labeling/branding yourself to be one thing just cos of brand-loyalty. That doesn't mean you should be someone else, but it means don't be forced to hide what you are based on a passed label. Be proud of your origins but never let that loyalty cost you your originality.

I dedicate today's music to the best-known Australian ever Steve Irwin. Tears well up whenever I think of him and this time it's no crocodile tears. I don't think I'll ever get over Steve's death . He's one rare man who found his reason in this life. Guys I know that everyone dies, but Steve was not everyone.

This is something i would like to say to a guy i know right now...but i am just keeping my cool and allowing myself to calm down and evaluate stuff before i even speak out.haiz

allowing me to be me is just what i am really battling with this season. not fitting into people's mold and judgements and wants. Sure is not easy..eeks! but well..i guess it will take to me learn some new things. i choose to take it light heartedly though at times it can really be frustration from deep within. like i can growl too..grr..heez..

Steve and Janice fit in dis slot
Janice made a tremendous impact

Hmmmm...this one got me thinking...Never before hv i thought abt all that.
I hail from a bengali family, but one wud hardly find any trace of bengali tradition in me if scrutinized closely, even my name is completely out of bengali dictionary. As far as my habits, characteristics, look, accent is very diff than the traditional bengalis.
I really don't know what wud be an appropriate line to describe me....I m original in my own ways, mostly i sound very proud and arrogant and most ppl i come across say that i hv loads of attitude, but frankly speaking i give a damn abt it. Its my manufacturing fault and its gonna be this way till i breath my last...

It ain't all that bad keshi. ppl tend to associate themselves with something. maybe they are not a ton like you.

the fact is social groups form by what they share in common - birds of a feather flock together

when ppl can't describe themselves they use such association since thats what they think they mostly r :)

some ppl potray themselves as what they r n associate with something ... some ppl associate themselves with something n be that

Why dont u go alone for the concert ? therez no need to go with someone .. u can enjoy the concert alone , right ? Of course , I have no idea about the situation and all

Madhu said...

Puppets and strings.........hmm sometimes we r the puppet and sometimes we hold the strings! Anyways its what u feel that's imp here....knowing u, I think u will get over this fast.

Coming to the post, I really dont know how I will introduce myself....depends a lot on that moment. But yeah I wont say "I'm a Indian girl...". I can never relate any of my traits to any particular country....its not like only in Greece girls love their family or only in America they know how to have fun.

Some choose to identify themselves with places (like most ppl from Kerela do....they gel so well even if they have never met just bcos they r from the same state...), companies, brands and so many things....its a way of getting ur attention or what u can relate to. Maybe its what they really feel for that comes out....like being an Indian. Or maybe they r just at a lose of words!!

Gosh i started out explaining something and came out with something else.........my stomach's rumbling....that's the prb i think.

Hope u have a great week ahead.

Very well said KAP... really introducing onesself is such a tough job... coz for me, its always been "who am i actually"... its not about the name, birth, origin, culture and religion... indentity is much more than that... exploring our indentity is what most of us dont think about. Anyways, i guess even i am among those "most of us".........

Dont know what to say......... thats all i guess

Nothing wrong in remembering one's roots and behaving accordingly.
We are born free without any likes/dislikes or views..
We get "conditioned" based on our religion, sex, size, parents' beliefs, neighours, friends etc

Negatives are - We get directed in thinking and behaving in a particular way..Which makes us lose our creativity..

Positives are - We remember our roots.. Its an effort to get my kids to learn our native language..
They only speak in English !!

This is so similar to my latest blog .. We think alike !!

you are right as always about identity. ppl too often 'brand' themselves with a certain external identity and then try to live by it .which sometimes lead to absurdities.
but more than that they forget to be themselves and hide behind the mask. that may be easy but they don't know what they are missing: their own self.

hope you have a better working week than the weekend. :-)

Way to take a stand on the concert.

As for introducing myself, it's pretty simple. Hi, my name is...

Nothing more than that. If I feel more detail is necessary, then I'll give it, otherwise I think that is good.

WithinWithout said...

I hate to say I'm just a boring white guy, so more or less just fade into the background.

I introduce myself, I guess, by just saying what my name is with a smile...

I might say at some point that I live in such and such area, I'm a sportswriter, single, two kids...

IF ANYONE ASKS ME FOR THAT KIND OF INFO or if it naturally comes up in conversation.

I'm not what I do, and I'm not just a parent, and I'm not just my marital status.

Like you, I can be different things in different situations and all things in all situations.

And good on you for cutting those strings. Being anyone's puppet can be hard on the limbs, the heart and the mind.

Now since the weekend is long gone, am sure your out of "shitty" mess.

About the topic of this post on how do we identify ourselves, well, in 2006, we are no longer place-centric. We are now earthlings. True we need to be proud of our origin but in day-to-day life, it doesn't matter anymore. All depends on what you do, where you are and who you with.

This is actually a nice topic and I might comment more on my blog as post soon.

{{What matters is being who you are}} - Well, who you are is the question that is moot.
"be yourself" is an age old clichéd cousin of what you've said above. You've listed a whole bunch of constructions which themselves are nothing short of prejudiced generalizations.
Why? An American is devoid of family love? Or is an Indian not supposed to enjoy sports? You are perpetuating the very element that you're criticising. With all these contradictions I don't see any identity crisis in you, you're clearly 'clear shallow water' - clear yet shallow!

@saby
{{but it dont matter how u die}} - err, it does! I'm happy that he died the way he did. At least now, people won't say things like "the way he was handling the snake/croc, I knew he was going to die on their mouths someday". That would have been so antithetical. I'm gratified that even in his death he has taken a route that is very unique yet modest. In a way, his death embodies his life.

yes and? what I mean is be what ur istincts r telling u to be. I guess u didnt get that.

**You've listed a whole bunch of constructions which themselves are nothing short of prejudiced generalizations.

haha thats how u saw it Suresh. And it's not necessarily what I meant by those examples. I knew this was coming and Im glad someone pointed that out.Let me explain.

**Why? An American is devoid of family love?

did I say that? U interpreted my example in that manner and I cant help that. What I have used in those examples r in fact MAJOR traits of women in this world. Surely u dun see MOST Indian women in bars d u? It's the MAIN cultural characteristics I have laid out in the examples. Not prejudices at all!

**Or is an Indian not supposed to enjoy sports?

haha now u sound bitter. Get a grip. I did not mean it in that way. My ans is above for this Qn too.

**You are perpetuating the very element that you're criticising.

NOPE I disagree. Now that I have explained what I meant in this post, u should take that judgement abt me back. Cos Im certainly not copping it.

**With all these contradictions I don't see any identity crisis in you, you're clearly 'clear shallow water' - clear yet shallow!

huh pretty brave a judgement about someone u havent even known b4 this post. Suresh did u get hurt by any of the statement I wrote in this post? Dont take it so personally. Besides I think u r shallow than anyone of us here cos u jump to pretty big conclusions abt people w.o. clearly understanding what's been written! And ur pretty UNCLEAR too.

**At least now, people won't say things like "the way he was handling the snake/croc, I knew he was going to die on their mouths someday".

Suresh would u stop disrespecting the dead? It's ugly. U sound like u had a bad day and please dont vent out ur frustration here! Cos I dun even know u and u have no right to speak abt Steve in that manner. Have u done anything worthwhile for ur country as much as Steve did for Aus and the world? So U can just zip it and thanks but NO THANKS!

Suresh ET said...

Ok back to basic deconstruction

{{yes and? what I mean is be what ur istincts r telling u to be. I guess u didnt get that.}} - What does instinct mean? Or what is an instinct in general? Can a person who has never driven before "instinctively" hit the breaks when an animal (or whatever) runs in to your car? Oh, how can a person drive if he/she doesn't know how to drive, let alone stopping the car in time? - is that your question?
That's exactly the point. What you call instincts are nothing but social constructions that you internalized over a period of time that it, from the conscious then to the subconscious, has entered a part of your mind that's called a instinct. So, we are not just born with instincts, we develop them according to our environment (or to put it a little theoretically, habitus). And in numerous cases we destroy/suppress several instincts (ex: no matter how beautiful a woman/man is, your sexual energy does not get triggered "instinctively"--as we are born--if the person is of an "inappropriate" social relation to you).

So if you're a "victim" of American pop-culture, your "instinctive" reaction to pizza would probably be "whoa that's a lot of calories". The reaction is not you, even your instinct is not you, for 'you' do not exist. You are a personification of your circumstances and surroundings and to an extent, genes (and genes know nothing about calories or good/bad sports). So when you say "be yourself", all it means is, "continue to personify whatever you personified before that moment" - which need always be right or wrong (the nature of the embodiment and how you judge 'right' or 'wrong' are debatable). So your statement, in its essence, is pointless. It's like a weatherman's prediction that goes "it may or may not rain today!”

{{Why? An American is devoid of family love? - "did I say that?"}} - No you made an insinuation that Greeks are more "attached" to their families - which has no anthropological/theoretical evidence. It's how Bush ducks out: "We never said Saddam Hussain was responsible for 9/11". Sure he never said that, he was just saying "Saddam has assisted the terrorist attacks of 9/11". Pardon me, logical deduction supersedes semantic precision.

{{What I have used in those examples r in fact MAJOR traits of women in this world.}} - What you used in your examples are stereotypes that are euphemistically referred to as culture. Had this post been a casual, humorous anecdote I wouldn't have used the word 'prejudiced'. But since it had tone was relatively "serious", the post was rather shallow and prejudiced indeed. Of course you can always hide under the mask "that's the way you see it" - a universal text book example of rhetorical escapism.
I can look at a naked a man in the middle of a busy road and go "That's outrageous! what is he thinking? crazy lunatic"; for which he can respond "Outrageous? I'm just trying to show that a man needs to get in to touch with this natural self and the world as it is, it's a metaphorical connection that I draw to propagate selflessness and peace. If you think it's crazy, 'U interpreted my expression e in that manner and I cant help that'". So go ahead, employ more escapist contrivances. You say what you want to say. What you say, regardless of what you mean, means something independently (a naked man is a naked man).

{{t's the MAIN cultural characteristics I have laid out in the examples.}} - What you call "cutular characteristics" are nothing but transitory behavioural traits (which are influenced by several elements including, but not limited to, media, family, memes, financial set up etc.).

{{Surely u dun see MOST Indian women in bars do u?}} - I don't see women in India driving SUVs either. I can tell you tonnes of other things that you cannot see a lot of women in India doing. There are several reasons for that; economic status being one of those, very significant one at that. And talking about women in bars: women from the socially wealthy or "upper class" can be seen in all page 3 parties and other social get-togethers on par with men. If culture is the factor that stops Indian women from going to bars, I wouldn't see any "Page 3" personality that is a woman. Or we should probably take it as rich Indian women have no culture (or that theirs is more "westernised").
Contrarily, women folk can be seen in many temples involved in all kinds of "sexually arousing" postures (sometimes along with men). Historical records say that women had to pose in those postures for several hours everyday in order have them sculpted. Now this can be generalized as "Ancient India women were horny sluts". I wonder if that was our culture. I wonder if those women represent all women of that time (not that there's anything wrong with that).
Another example: all poor people have certain food habits, if food habits is an indicator of culture, then poverty defines culture (at least for a lot of people in India). So, maintaining their culture would probably mean they should continue to be poor. In that sense "be yourself" would mean "be poor, always!".
What is my point?
Culture is not as tangible as it may seem, if it was tangible it is not as observable, if it was observable it is still not generlizable (regardless of how many people ape it), if it is generalized let it not be done loosely (like it’s done in your post).

{{huh pretty brave a judgement about someone u havent even known b4 this post.}} - I've read your posts before, just didn't feel like deconstructing any of it, and even in this one I didn't do it so well (because deconstruction takes a lot of time and engagement). Even otherwise, a few judgments can be made based on a few traits (a naked guy is naked guy - whether you've seen him before or not). Nevertheless, I didn't pass that judgment about you as an individual but as the author this particular post. And even taking your "explanations" in to account, I cannot but stand by what I had said initially. Your views in this topic are still shallow.

{{Suresh did u get hurt by any of the statement I wrote in this post? Dont take it so personally.}} - As an academician I take nothing personally. I tend be forthright and critical about theoretical flaws in write-ups that try to carry a sociological message (whether intended or not). This post of yours was one of those and I've pointed to a few, briefly.

{{Besides I think u r shallow than anyone of us here cos u jump to pretty big conclusions abt people w.o. clearly understanding what's been written!}} - Still, a naked man is naked man!

On a different tone (not note)...

{{Suresh would u stop disrespecting the dead?...
...Cos I dun even know u and u have no right to speak abt Steve in that manner}} - Just for the record: I didn't say anything bad about Steve, in fact I have lot respect for him, you can check my blog post that I made on this death, if you had any doubts.

Now, to what you've said: What are you trying to say? If I knew you I have every right to speak about Steve? :)). ennama solra!. What's the with the whole "you hve no right!" BS? Actually I have every right to say anything about anyone, dead or alive. Except in a few countries, you can actually, rightfully praise Hitler for what he did (many people do). You can deny that the holocaust ever happened - all under the name "freedom of speech".

Fine, let us assume that I said something that I did not have the right say - what are you going to do about it? Prosecute me?

About dead people: Dead people do not get "immune to criticisms" boon when they die. Steve has always had his critics and they'll continue to criticize his past (while expressing grief about this death). Those are two different things. To take the Hitler example; he cannot be praised or not spoken about just becaust he is dead. If we applied your logic there won't be a faculty called history!

{{U sound like u had a bad day and please dont vent out ur frustration here!}} - naah, kid (yeah with maximum condescension) I didn't have a bad day, I enjoy posting this kind of stuff. But yeah, I'm sure I made your day pretty bad, already. By the time you're done reading this post, I would have probably ruined your whole week (ok fine, make it 3 days).
{{ Have u done anything worthwhile for ur country as much as Steve did for Aus and the world?}} – Do you really want to know or is it just a rhetorical question? If you assumed-- “huh this guy is just some empty weirdo, I can corner him with this exceptionally intelligent question that’s never been asked by anyone except the 4 smartest people in the world (one of which is me)”—you’ve got the wrong number. I can actually give you a long list of things, interested?
What are you suggesting anyway? People who haven’t done anything “worthwhile” for the world are expendable?

PS. I know this "comment" puts your ego in a slingshot, stretches it beyond its threshold; shoots it high to get it as close to the Sun, to have it burning before it spirals down to hit the ground. A small request: either publish my comment in its entirety before you split it to fit your replies or don’t post it all and save your ego.

Of course, whether it appears here or not, it will appear in my blog.

{{"no one but a fool enters crocodile infested woaters"}} - Columbus was a fool in the eyes many Europeans because he was sailing towards the horizon and eventually slip off Earth's edge (well actually he was a fool in a sense, he thought, in the beginning of the journey, the Earth was flat too).

So yeah, if you don't have the knowledge or the skills to do what appears to be dangerous, the person who does it is a fool indeed. Who else is a fool, an astronaut?

{{Suresh u might as well direct me to a library. too long. will read when I have time for the lecture.}} - Yeah it's better if you go to the library sometime. Oh! you don't have the time to read it now? man I got snubbed! What a witty reply. I spend 20 minutes in typing a comment and she says she doesn't have time to read it. Can anyone possibly come with such a sharp and clever response? Dumb as I am, I would take your word for truth :D.
