The Toughest Innings

Ooo! Aah! Glenn McGrath! Yes that's how popular, talented and great the world-renowned Aussie cricketer Glenn McGrath is. But he faced his toughest Innings in life on Sunday when his 42yr old wife Jane McGrath passed away after an 11yr battle with Cancer, leaving behind their 2 young children James and Holly. Now, while Death happens to every man/woman on Earth and in every family, what was special about Jane was that she was a very public person, and truly brave and an extremely positive spirit. Being diagnosed with Breast Cancer at just 31yrs of age, she didn't let it affect her Life and Living. She always came on TV and in the papers with encouraging words and great wisdom to other Cancer sufferers and also used her high profile to help other Cancer-stricken women - The McGrath Foundation. In short, she DID something about it FOR others in the small timeframe that she was GIVEN on this Earth. I find Jane to be an amazing and courageous ambassador for true Humanity. And it's rare that we find souls like her. I have been watching her brave Battle closely over the years through her ups and downs, and right throughout it all, what I saw was a true Survivor....not a survivor of a disease but a survivor in LIFE. She showed people what it is to have Death staring her in the face yet take it in good spirits, smile through the many tears and just get on with it. She did her best to LIVE...at the same time, she did make plans for her own funeral too (as she was recently told by her doctors that she had only few months to live). Now how very brave is that? To choose her own coffin, the flower arrangements, the farewell songs etc etc. She had everything in life...her superstar and loving husband, 2 beautiful kids, a great home and so much of love around her. And most of all she had the greatest attitude towards life and the miseries thrown by it at her. Cos of that I say she didn't LOSE her life, rather she WON in life. Forever shall we remember her true valour!

And I was thinking. We always seem to believe that it's our education, skills, achievements, assets, careers etc that take us places. Not for me. I believe it's people, even total strangers like Jane, who takes us places in life. It's the courage in their actions, the bravery in their battles, the positivity in their attitude, the brilliance in their deeds, the beauty in their hearts, the story of their lives, the Life in their Deaths...that's what takes me places in life. It's them that take my soul to a higher level...to a place that where nothing can shake my soul. The Life in the Death of someone so bright, secured my soul.

My b'day post was written with Jane McGrath in mind. Hence the 'one day at a time' theme. And it was also her funeral yesterday (on my b'day) and the Memorial took place very close to where I work in the City - in Sydney's historic Garrison Church where the couple got married in 1999. It was an emotional public Farewell, and to see a husband and 2 young kids bidding adieu to their loving Wife and Mother, was too painful for a soul like me. But I guess, the fact that Jane lived one day at a time inspiring so many people in Australia and around the world, makes me feel content for her and her family. Cos Jane was one in a zillion who realised what it is to LIVE before she DIED.

Today's song is a special dedication to Jane's undying spirit. I remember watching one of Jane and Glenn's recent TV Interviews (her last one), and Jane was asked what do you want in life, she replied 'I wanna grow old with Glenn and see my children all grown up and see their life'. Ok now I'm crying! Sweet Jane you didn't know me but I know you so well...your great spirit and bold battle inspired many people like me in the short time you were here. We will never forget the Angel that you are...all your work is done now, and all your pain is gone away...your kids will do well being blessed by you...now fly with the angels darl MWAH!

..// That`s so wonderful, Keshi..! I`ve not known about Jane, but reading her story, like you`ve told here, really inspires me, to secure my soul as well, to win in life.

Take Care and God Bless!

And so nice of you to share this with us.. bcs we all need strength to live life as there are so many difficulties we face day to day.. And then reading something like this makes you feel content with your life.. and gives strength to fight with life if anything wrong happens! And THAT is important!
May god rest her soul in peace and bless her children and give Glen the strength to take care of his children..

Why are they mortal?
And that also such great ones. And you know,I saw her interviews as well.I mean noone could point out from her positive attitude and a cheerful smile that she was a person who was one step away from death. All we can say or do is R.I.P Mrs.McGrath.

People like her.I bow down to them.
And she IS a true person who has potrayed a "human" in herself.
I even hope that McGrath overcomes this terrible sorrow which has hit him,and even her two li'l children.

She is a person who deserves Heaven.
R.I.P Glen!

God bless their family.

Cancer sucks. It will take everything from you if you let it. That's why Jane lived her life while dealing with it. It's hard to do that when you go through treatment, let alone plan your final departure, but you must or else you die inside long before your actual death.

Sir Grunty, cancer survivor.

A beautiful tribute to a great woman.

I have been sad since I heard the news, having also followed her very public journey while watching my father on his own.

Attitude is everything in life because there is no changing the past. Waiting until you are on deaths door is too late to say, do or fix the things you need to do.

Jane's life was "Carpe Dium" personified. May she RIP and her family continue to live life to the fullest.

Nadine said...

Very moving. She sounded like a wonderful woman, whom her family will miss terribly.

God speed to Jane McGrath... My hearts go out to their family. Pigeon is not just a good cricketer but also a good bloke who is very attached to his family.

Cancer is a 'sshhh' word in my household and the most disliked word during my childhood cos it took my dad, who had no bad vices, away from me... he was diagnosed at late stages and fought hard for five years. :'(

Well, some people must go through such experiences for a reason, I suppose.

Take care Keshi Girl... Have a great day... Cheer up!!! :)

Yaar thats very touching..

I guess it teaches us to look at life's troubles and hardships as a pinch of salt and our life as a lake rather than a glass of water.. coz a pinch of salt makes the water in a glass salty but does not affect the lake..

Thats probably called living life the royal way :)

Macadamia The Nut said...

Makes one wonder about the life we're wasting, doesn't it Keshigirl? There's SO much to do for ourselves, for the people around us.. and yet most people are content to hang on to their pet peeves and let the beauty and joy in life go unnoticed.

Sweet Jane you didn't know me but I know you so well..." From a summit we can’t find every person in crowd, identifying who is this and that but all can know who is standing above. That’s how she stands in mind. If we think about the day we pass away, the today would become suffer. It was great know Jane, keshi.

Well I remain, but in some urgency I miss to tell u that u shares my mom’s B’day. Her’s too 25th june :)

generalising here. dunno if you'll agree...

no matter what, certain people have a central role in your life...and more often than not, you're glad that stuff is that way. because none of us, no matter how introverted or misanthropic we are, can be without someone on our side. what makes the world more beautiful is when someone takes it upon themselves to make a difference, in a good way.

i loved the spirit of this post, and i think its an amazing tribute, but there's only so much words can convey, right?

Strange how the lives of strangers can touch us in a way no one can understand and explain...

I have always been a big time fan of Glenn McGrath, but I have never followed his peraonal life, needless to say I had no idea about his wife's illness.

All it invoke in meis why does it happen to good ppl always ? Why the good ones have to be at the sacrificial altar all the time.

As timeless life and love are, why do they have to cease to exist for the ones who should be living away to glory...?

Why ?!

Anonymous said...

I never knew this all about the better half of McGrath. Thanks for sharing this with us all.Cancer Survivors as well as victims often teach us a lot about improving the "quality of life"- remember Dead Poets Society or Patch Adams ? I have always been a die hard fan of Armstrong and incidentally he has helped me get over my chronic ailment. Its a responsibility, the way I see it, on part of those suffering/recuperating to inspire people- and instill the best of things- Hope !!

I must compliment you for the comments that I saw on some of the blogs.Just curious- How do you manage to read so many posts? I mean, must be difficult :)

It's impossible for us to understand WHY.
I still have one Bible verse from my years in the church that still resonates a workable truth for me...
Ecclesiastes 9:11
"I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift,
nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding,
nor yet favour to men of skill;

but TIME and CHANCE happeneth to them all."

Don't ya love Happeneth..
Sh*t Happeneth!

I often wonder how that didn't get edited because it doesn't seem to support the idea that there is some BIG plan.

This is a very sad story but it proves that some people make more of a difference in a relatively short amount of time, than most others would even if they lived to be 100 years old.

Sh*t Happeneth!

haha thats cute! Im gonna use that from now on. :)

**I often wonder how that didn't get edited because it doesn't seem to support the idea that there is some BIG plan.

lol true!

**This is a very sad story but it proves that some people make more of a difference in a relatively short amount of time, than most others would even if they lived to be 100 years old.

so so so true! Cos most ppl just EXIST...they forget to LIVE!

Silvara sweetz these days I hv unexplained tears in my eyes...even when Im on the train.

It must be Jane's sudden death. cos even tho she had Cancer, I never thought she'd die so soon.

Yes I know Rove was there too...and Jane picked the same song as Belinda Emmet did for her funeral which was:

Monty Python's 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life'.

Humor even at Death. That's what I call a shining spirit!

maam u dnt need to derive strength frm.ur brave already.see maam u dnt need to have to get cancer to show ur brave.one mans mountain is anothr mans molehill.we must respect evryone who fights the challenge called life.whether they are extrme cases like this or simple ones like a child geting up to ride his cycle again after falin.that is the celebration of life for me.when the mst frail ones of us show us life is nt to be lived...it is to be grabbed and enjoyed.cheerz to everyone who takes a step forward..hwEVer smal or slow that might be...it sure beats sitin and cmplaining.... Oi i am leavin on 2nd.the nt cnection wil go too lol.

felt very bad whni read abt the news of jane's death on BBC. i was one die-hard fan of her never-say-die attitude.
every word u wrote here abt her is perfectly right. but still, she is a person beyond words.
