Bittertweet Botoxification

What's with the world these days? I witnessed a very disturbing scene over the weekend. I was at the mall and was passing a manicure & pedicure salon and saw something that made me freeze on my tracks in total shock. No I didnt see ladies tearing each others' hair out just to be first in the queue *trust me I wouldn't be surprised by such a scene cos they are becoming quite frequent in the news these days arent they!*. What I saw was something totally new to me. There were 3 girls, probably around the age of not more than 6 or 7yrs, getting a pedicure done! Hang on, arent Beauty salons for grown ladies? When did BEAUTY and looking sexy become an issue/requirement/necessity for kids? I was stunned. These kids had faces of angels, they had barely grown out of their baby years, and here they were lying down like adults, wondering about God knows what until their tiny toe nails got painted in red slutty nailpolish by a woman old enough to be their granma! What are their parents doing to these children by letting them run amok with adult frenzies? Why do they need brightly painted toenails let alone manicures and pedicures? Arent those tiny feet supposed to be covered by sneakers and climb trees, or run barefeet in fresh green grass feeling nature on their skin?

These days there are kids on Twitter, Facebook etc doing what adults are doing...then there are Kate-Moss wannabes pursuing modelling careers at the age of 12...then there are kids going to Pre-uni classes at the age of 5! Kids these days know alot, want to be alot more than who they are, ask for alot more than they can afford, do alot of things that tarnish their innocence, only to feel 'cool' about themselves and to stay in touch with the trends. And in that process, they lose their entire 'childhood'. And their parents support all of this, sadly.

Peer pressure can be a killer of originality. Same applies to adults. The pressure to do what everyone else is doing is mind-numbingly sad. We live in an era where people are living pseudo lives, where Skype is how you stay in touch, where sleeping pills take care of all your worries, where a breakup is done through a txt message, where being HOT is what it takes to be loved, where a gun is the way of dealing with frustration, where your mother is no longer in your Call-today list, where relationships are as quick and cheap as a drive-thru meal, where having one-night stands and getting trashed is the 'in' thing, where Wants are endless, where 'plastic culture' is on the prowl. Life has become so fast, cheap and fake today that I wouldnt be surprised if a foetus in the womb demands a pedicure next *and the mother provides it too*! Today, life blooms with too much information, and the blossom withers and falls off way before it's time...simply because there's a paranoia of being left behind...something that need not be feared if you arent a follower.

Hmmm...I agree with most of your sentiments there Kesh. Kids are growing up wayyy too fast for most people's liking.

HOWEVER, you also got to realise that for a lot of little girls - playing dress-ups (which includes trying on all of Mummy's makeup!!) is quite common. Those girls you see there may have been there for a special occasion to make them feel 'grown up'. You don't know the circumstances. The colour of the nailpolish is irrelevant - how can you say that red nails on a little girl is 'slutty'??

So don't blame the mother so much - blame the society that puts notions into women's heads that these are things that make them beautiful. Toys like Barbies and Bratz, 'real-life' baby dolls that play to the stereotypes of how girls/women should be interested in and how they should behave.

There's a line between innocent playing and provocativeness. I don't agree with people who let their kids wear clothes equivalent to grown women - because yes, kids don't need mixed messages of being 'sexy' in their heads. They have a whole lifetime to deal with it lol.

I think that only the parents can decide what side of that line they will raise their kids on. If they can give the message that it's ok to be just YOU then I think kids will be ok.

Those little kids were probably just a couple of spoiled, pampered little brats whose mother indulge them with anything they want.

A lot of parents are more concerned with being buddies with their kids rather than the parent.

** playing dress-ups (which includes trying on all of Mummy's makeup!!) is quite common.

oyeah I agree...my niece does that too. But playing dressups isnt the same as getting professional manicures n pedicures is it?

**Those girls you see there may have been there for a special occasion to make them feel 'grown up'.

to feel grown-up (for fun) u really dun need to get professional salon treatment! I find that ridiculous. Maybe Im wrong but if I was a parent, I wudnt consider that something 'rightful' by the child either. But thats just me :)

**how can you say that red nails on a little girl is 'slutty'??

:) ok I may hv sounded very opinionated there but bright red nailpolish on a 6yr old is 'vulgar', IMO that is.

**So don't blame the mother so much - blame the society that puts notions into women's heads that these are things that make them beautiful

But Silvara its the MOTHER of the child who has the control of ths child, no matter what the Society does, isnt it? Especially of children as young as that.

Parents are responsible for putting restrictions to certain acts..to create an environment of limit..but with the kid of competition..everybody wants to & make their kids fit into what they think is 'different' & 'snazzy'.
In India as well..you'll find little girls/boys getting their hair colored & following such kind of things.
I personally know few who have been so badly pampered that they drive 300 kms from home just to get a haircut!!

These things just turn innocent ones into snobs! Manners are on planet Pluto.

Fast forward another 3 yrs, students are taking such coaching up on themselves right from 7th standard! No, I am not kidding you...

No, I did not mean to "deviate", but this is what came to my mind up on reading some of your statements in the last paragraph.

Branching it out on a broader sense, u have the answer...

After all, precociousness kills a child's innocence.

Yep Keshi, completely agree. Kids are loosing their childhood pretty soon it seems. Pedicures for 6 or 7 year olds is scary.

Menchie said...

Hey Keshi! Totally agree with your observations. I see four year olds wearing shoes with heels! heels! My daughter sometimes wants those shoes and I'm like, no freaking way!

I know little girls love to play dress up -- but it's the parents who should put a limit to what should be allowed and to let kids be kids. Apart from the pedicures, I once read an article from the U.S. about little girls having bikini or full body waxes -- mostly those whose parents allow their kids to model. It was very disturbing.

JAMJARSUPERSTAR said...

Well I think kids are growing up a LOT faster these days - they're getting all sorts done when they're very young and aren't enjoying the freedom of being able to just go around looking really natural (cos let's face it, by the time they're 15 they'll be wearing loads of makeup and wanting all the best clothes - peer pressure, people!)

Agree with Silvara though - maybe this is just a mad extension on the whole dress-up thing!
Ciao

rayshma said...

i don't see anything wrong if this is a once-a-while thing... like if it's the kid's bday and the mom lets her get a pedicure as a "treat" or something.
but there are kids - as young as 5 and 6 who frequent salons for beautification! and not just hair cuts! and that's really pushing it!

i'm all for letting kids choose what they love to do and do it... but it is the parents responsibility to guide them. to "ground" them. they have to made to realize the "value" of things... and taught the importance of a non-plastic world.

as you said... as long as you're not a follower - and don't become one - you're safe!

p.s.: welcome back gurl! love the new template! :)

forgive me if I sound a little preachy, but I disagree completely. What is saw is the exception and not the rule. All examples u've cited are exceptions. Its sad that we live in a world where we don't notice people other than those in our strata. Just look at the income group and u'll realise a lot of us are in the top 5% of the country and that's what we believe this world is. Rich, spoilt, with beauty bought.
Go out there, in the country and u'll know what kids are like. They are still like they always will be :)
Also, in our worlds, remember one this quote
"I understand the impulse to pull the trigger. But if we lose ourselves, we lose everything"
So be urself and u'll notice that there are many like u :)

However, it may be possible that these girls in question are here for some special occasion or are just pampered brats. You always see little girls wanting to imitate their mother and do whatever she does and so this might be a treat from their for being good or studying well or something like that. In that case the mom is to blame for letting the girls have their way !!!

now that is what you call too much of freedom!! honestly, no one there has an iota of realisation of where this could lead to and the ones providing the service are there to make the money. so even if their conscience pricks them they wouldn't say much, coz that's where they make their money.
for the kids, they are young and impressionable. they would follow the latest trends n fads, do wot their mommies do or elder siblings do. its the parents who can put across in the most apt manner, what they can do what they cannot. again, parents end up agreeing to such acts just to make up to their kids for may be not being in time for dinner the last week. basically, over compensating for giving more time to work than their kids.
the price u pay in a mad rush to the top, especially with both parents running in the race.

Hi Keshi!

A very good to bring up. Certainly kids are doing a lot of things that tarnish the beauty of their innocence. I know a 5th grader who owns the latest mobile phone since she was in 3rd grade. A lot of similar things like that. Where did that freshness and innocence go? Kids don't really look good when they act older than their age. I still don't know how to act/look like many girls would at my age or even some female cousins who are hardly 12 or 13! I totally agree with La vida loca. At the end of the day we are who we really are. There's no escaping, is it?? Even if we try to look all glamy and be who we aren't then, how far can one run from oneself? Who are we kidding? Ourselves??? :)

oyeah I know alot of young kids like that. They even starve themselves to look thinner by the day. I hv young cousins who think drinking and partying out every night is FASHION. lol!

Im always MYSELF. Thats why I see both sides of everything that I come across. If I was only concentrating on ppl who r just like me, then I'd be blind to ppl who arent like me.

but i feel i look loads better with my brows done. and yeah i do my nails myself too!! i dont even feel like getting my hair trimmed!
kids dont have the place and friends to play with and talk to... everyone stays far away and all they do is stay home and watch tv... and they tag along to the parlour when their mom goes..
i know one girl who is around 11 or 12 whose mom has a parlour. the kid hangs out at the parlour all the time and doesnt listen to the mom (who tries to keep her away but isnt able to) so ask the kid about anything from a manicure to waxing and shell tell you!
and so many kids these days, in 7th or 8th standard, wear lipstick every evening!!!

When both the parents go out to work, its the child that waits at home without anyone near to speak to......But jobs have become so necessary these days that even parents cannot think of sitting at home.....In these cases, we just give extra pocket money and a tution teacher to fill up that vacant space of ours....

I hav no solution to this problem but just can hope that the world becomes a better place to live.

I completely agree with whatever you have said. It concerns me a lot too. Life and people in general are becoming fake and they are making that falseness get into their kids too.
