Amazing Human Nature

Beginning of this week, I read so many heartfelt posts about the weekend Delhi Blasts and the Hurricane in Texas. Tragedy everywhere, and sadness and pain in many hearts. By now we have become a generation that have witnessed extreme violence and nature's fury, and felt immense grief many a times. We have witnessed the World Trade Centre towers tumbling down to ashes with so many people trapped inside, we have seen the devastating Russian school siege that claimed innocent lives, we have seen the China-Tibet clashes, War in Iraq etc etc. We have also seen catastrophic natural disasters such as the Tsunami, Earthquakes, Floods, Tornadoes and many more. What do we do now? Actually nothing. I'm sorry to sound so helpless and pessimistic, but it's the truth. If you look at Terrorism, it cannot be stopped...there's no cure for it. Cos some people will always be evil, just as much as some others will always be good. Goodness and Evil are both inherent qualities to humans. Evil is natural to some, just like grace is natural to some others. What about natural disasters then? Nature can be calm and beautiful as well as violent and deadly. It's natural to Nature hence cannot be stopped...they will come as they please. Just like evil (/good) humans and their evil (/good) deeds. One holds a gun to prove a point, and the other stays silent to prove that same point.

We can cry, feel really sad and angry, try to stop them, hope against hope, try to find a solution etc etc but the truth is both humans and nature are unstoppable. Both can be really beautiful as well as super ugly...both can be really calm as well as extremely violent...both can be really life-giving as well as brutally fatal. We may put a stop to it today, but somewhere else it'll all happen again tomorrow, be it terrorism or a natural disaster.

My point is, as long as both humans and this Earth exist, there'll always be evil and disasters...both natural...one to humans, the other to Nature.

I'm unafraid of evil humans and Nature's fury...and I'm also unafraid to admit that they're natural, and there are things that we cannot do anything about but recover from afterwards. Do you have a cure to evil qualities that are inherent to humans? I don't. I only have thoughts and few suggestions that some people may never understand. Only cos it's natural for them to be evil.

The Buddha said 'Your worst enemy cannot harm you as much as your own unguarded thoughts'.

How true. Cos that's where evil is nurtured...at thoughts level. And Sri Lanka even being predominantly 'Buddhist', is in bloodshed for 20+ years now...why? Cos humans are so 'divided' in their 'thinking'.

Just take care wherever you are...and make sure your 'nature' is life-giving, not deadly...be a life-saver, not a killer. Cos after all, humans do have a choice, unlike Nature. The Earth is a beautiful place no matter what, and we humans CAN learn to spread Grace instead of Evil...can't we?

  2. Beautiful post keshi. In this whole year, there are many blasts in India. Large no of people have died in these disastrous blasts. But yes, what can we do in this? When I go out, I don’t know if I will be back home safely. Bcs there re so many evil practices, I cant say when can I become a victim of it. I just feel that, you can just see what is happening and be alert to detect if anything wrong is happening around you. Like in delhi blasts, 3 small kids saw someone planting the bomb!
Life is short, live is kingsize. Bce you never know when it can come to an end!

  10. Regarding natural disasters....

I believe that its the humans who have been destroying nature since long and as a result, we have to face tsunamis, tornadoes and earthquakes.

Its basically due to global warming through industries, deforestation and mindless mining.

Here in Orissa, we are witnessing massive sea n river erosion. Rivers have been eating way chunks of land in many villages and sea has eroded major tourist destinations like Puri and Gopalpur.

Humans do have an option of keeping nature beautiful and calm but instead they chose to spoil it for their benefit.

  11. I say :
Start promoting goodness wherever you find and one day each human(may be) narrating the goodness about others and someone narrating his goodness too and that day will be the world goodness day.
Hope we understand how important is to promote good things of life.
    Start promoting.

  22. Hello Keshi,
Lovely music, and I am amazed of Your way of seeing humans as a part of nature, and that natures movements are unpredictable, and so are we.
Your post made me reflect over the good-evil dichotomy from a cultural perspective, and all of the sudden good became evil, and evil good. So it is not only weather and climate that plays a role, also culture and place.

Great photos, makes Your words stand up much stronger!!!

  23. Let me rant a little:

The planet is fine. It's the people that are fucked.

I personally enjoy nature kicking back humanity in the nuts. Why? Because, we raped the planet with our indiscreminate personal greediness for a comfortable life. Enough said.

Human Nature - Let me leave you with this quote, ponder on it and you will realise how true it is:

"You know what's interesting about assassination? Well, not only does it change those popularity polls in a big fucking hurry, but it's also interesting to notice who it is we assassinate. Ya ever notice who it is, got to think who it is we kill? It's always people who've told us to live together in harmony and try to love one another. Jesus, Gandhi, Lincoln, John Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, John Lennon – they all said, "Try to live together peacefully." Bam! Right in the fucking head! Apparently we're not ready for that. Yeah, that's difficult behavior for us. We're too busy thinking around, sitting around trying to think up ways to kill each other."

  24. Keshi you stole the words from my heart. These last few months have been very hard with the blasts in different places in India, floods in Bihar, hurricane in the US etc. We are actually a generation which has grown up on this.

My first reaction on hearing that there had been a blast was "Oh where this time?" e have become hardened by what we see. The flip side is also that we have learnt to to be cowed down by whatever comes our way. We grit our teeth and smile. We shall not be cowed down - either by by some nameless faceless cowards who choose to bomb public places or by the fury of nature. We shall learn and we shall adapt and we shall cope - but we shall not be felled by this

  26. This was a post that could make one dive in thoughts. You wrote
****the truth is both humans and nature are unstoppable.*** and I doubt if human are unstoppable. Among so many reasons why the violence has been rampant and why we hear about them so much I believe its due to the difference in class, social status, living standards, distribution of wealth among people. THose who have been fortunate enough (don't give example of hardwork I do not believe people in US and rich European countries work harder than labors in Africa) to amass wealth and prosperity have been very inconsiderate toward the unfortunate people. Their luck and others misfortune made them believe that they can do anything at the cost of the unfortunates. Bias, double standards become rampant. They control judiciary, media and every other mean living no options for the destitutes to battle for their survival and existence. The unfortunates resorted to violence. I also believe that violence had always been there the only difference in our times is our instant reach to information.
I do not justify violence and atrocities against mankind. I detest Delhi blast, September 11 attacks, Iraq war.
This is only one way I think on the violence. There are some other points of view but I would reserve them for the time being.

    ReplyDelete

As the Buddha himself said..."'Your worst enemy cannot harm you as much as your own unguarded thoughts'", because its your thoughts which make you do bad things...
And as Mahavira said, Live and let live... everyone talks about the same thing...

  31. Yes I agree with having both qualities.

But then I am more curious to kow/find what qualities in other do we/self support more?

  34. **Do you have a cure to evil qualities that are inherent to humans?

Well, no one can have a cure to these qualities of humans, except for themselves.
Humans are individuals, so, the most effective cure for us is we ourselves. I can cure my evil, no one else can.

"N yah, the nature and human, I guess every living being is like that - positive and negative. Now, it is said, for matter there is antimatter, so for our universe, there is an anti-universe out there. Who knows, how things will be out there?

  35. you know what is strange..

its that one is man made and other is nature.. nature is something which we cant do much about.. but man made.. we can take lots of steps to prevent it.. but the only problem is .. there isnt much done about it..

i hope am not tryin to hurt anyone's sentiments here by mentioning the twin tower bombings but after that have you heard the States being in any kind of terrorist attacks.. they have actually tried to strengthen there security and taken precautions to make sure that its safe for their ppl.. why because each life is important.

India and its neighbouring countries.. have shed so much blood in the name of terrorism.. but there isnt much being done about it.. if there is.. then its not enough..

u're right. we, as humans, always have the choice. but as the old proverb goes, one man's food is another's poison.

yes..ppl like u and I atleast TRY...but d u think some ppl even THINk abt getting past their evil?

yes...but some ppl dun even know that they r evil!

  81. hey ty Aneesh!

**no one can have a cure to these qualities of humans, except for themselves.

I agree. its an INDIVUDAL thing.

**Humans are individuals, so, the most effective cure for us is we ourselves. I can cure my evil, no one else can.

Spot on! thats why its no point telling such ppl to be better ppl...they themselves hv to realise. Just like how we ourselves realise when we hv done something wrong...even after weeks and years...

**"N yah, the nature and human, I guess every living being is like that - positive and negative. Now, it is said, for matter there is antimatter, so for our universe, there is an anti-universe out there.

    I agree...

**Who knows, how things will be out there?

    eerie!!!

yes ur right...humans CAN atleast TRY to change...unlike Nature that depends on us too.

**they have actually tried to strengthen there security and taken precautions to make sure that its safe for their ppl.. why because each life is important.

    so true!

Countries like SL, India and Pakistan suffer for longer periods cos the govts and the terrorist groups hv their own missions...a POWER struggle. In between the innocents suffer and no one really cares, as long as they r safe. Its appalling!

I believe that. Cos even I can be evil sometimes :) Sometimes its just dormant, thats all.

**There is nothing good in us.

somehow I believe there is SOME good in us humans...such as love n compassion...kindness and goodwill...

**The Bible says that even our best deeds are like filthy rags in the eyes of God. We need God to help us make and do good.

Im not very religious..I just follow my Instincts than a Religion. I hv a way of life. And Im not so sure abt God. But thats just me :)

I didnt say just stand and watch! all I was saying is that EVIL is human nature too.

tell me, cud u do anything at all to STOP those blasts?

We cant control certain things and the only good thing that can be done is HELP those victims.

**they need to be taught a lesson as that was in the case...in Nepal..where there is a strict rule against theft ...... and guess wat people live without any fear there...so we need to be strict..and eye for an eye..and then it will stop

I agree. Punishments and deterrents need to be there. I didnt say we should eradicate them? But since the birth of this Earth and human civilisation, both LOVE and HATRED existed. It will be so til the end of time.

And thats all I was saying. U completely misunderstood my post.

  108. yep ... more like .. how do i appreciate the good if I never knew bad ....
having said that .. I surely feel we could use a little less of bad.. the balance has shifted way too much towards the bad ... and thats disturbing ... and i don't mean only bombs .. even friends, relationships, work everything ...
it (world) was intended to be sweet and sour soup by God i guess , but ppl are making it into hot and sour one .. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  109. I agree Shadows.

    **and i don't mean only bombs .. even friends,relationships,work everything ...

    Spot on!

I feel that the already GOOD should become BETTER...and the already BETTER should become the BEST. :) that way, we can inspire for the WORST to become WORSE...and the WORSE to become BAD...and BAD to become GOOD perhaps. :)

  110. we don't have to conquer the world...all we need to do is conquer ourselves...

there are enough moments of hate within us....the little terrorists within us...let us vanquish those from within...and i guess the world will be ok :)

  113. People are divided coz selfish needs rather than social needs and thaz why they are divided in each and every community rather thinking of human race.

    ReplyDelete
  114. thats so true, keshi dear. we can be angry about those facts, we can cry, shout, write about that. But it wont change anything.
It starts with those who are responsible for keeping peace but they care only about power and money, unfortunately it will remain this way, dont know for how long.

    ReplyDelete
  115. what u were saying is true... but issue is once it was true that no one can cross ocean and reach the moon...but now it is possible..isn't so...

so wat seems truth and universal now..may not be there tomorrow..but for that we need to fight and do the work...utopia is ideal but it is not impossible at least a near utopia can be achieved..we can try for it...can't we???

    ReplyDelete
  116. only if sick minded terrorists n politicians wud listen to any of us!
the world wud hav been a much better place!!

    ReplyDelete
  117. well then it goes for the already-enlightened ppl to spread the movement :) !!
guess the comment on othr statement is correct..
only i meant it the other way..
as in how wud it be , if each one improved the way he can...
in tht sense,"to each one his own"...
    get my point ?

    ReplyDelete
  118. Is like what we spread is picked by how many hands. Unless a change in the cycle, it never stops; it means in practice and thoughts. All seeds grow in way how we care truly by pouring water; bury seed in good soil to see the plant grow well. The same comes to human to taught good to see them grow as per. Beautiful post keshi! Hope we never touch the evil think.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I agree Mystique we dun hv to conquer the world. But its always ppl like u and me who UNDERSTAND wut needs to be done and really take those steps..not the really eveil ppl who goes and does these things.

They r the real terrorists, right?

It starts with those who are responsible for keeping peace but they care only about power and money, unfortunately it will remain this way, dont know for how long.

yes nothing will change, cos we chose the GOVTS and we chose to be quiet as long as nothing affects us. Sad world!

    Keshi.

    ReplyDelete
  124. yes Bro we CAN try...but the ppl who r trying r the ppl who are already GOOD. hv u noticed that?

**so wat seems truth and universal now..may not be there tomorrow

I agree. But being HUMAN is something that will NEVER CHANGE. Its DESIGNED already. Can u change ur human MIND? I guess not! It cant be compared with a trip to the Moon.

    Keshi.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Gosh.. so true..humans are part of nature and their course is as temperamental or beautiful as nature is.Its sad however because humans have a choice and choosing to hurt innocents crosses a line, and then again whats the point of calling these monsters "human"
