It seems that I've quite successfully acquired myself a cellphone stalker! No I'm not the kind of person who gives my cell number to just about anyone I meet, neither do I display it on any of the Internet forums that I am on. But this caller is freaking me out, since it is the first time that some anonymous person is giving me such calls. Here's the Stalking Timeline so far:Last night I was fast asleep when my cell rang twice around 11pm.
Second time around I picked it up, and a strange male voice gave my FULL NAME and asked me if I was that person.
I, in my groggy state of mind and still half asleep, replied yes. *at this stage I didn't suspect this person to be a stalker so I was only answering a standard phone call*
He then proceeded to say that he found me on the net and wanted to know if I was looking for a partner! *as soon as I heard that I freaked out and disconnected the call immediately as if I was speaking to Jack The Ripper!!*
What went through my mind after that was a good 6 hours of repetitive scenes from the horror flick 'Psycho' that made me lay awake til dawn, that resulted in a severe headache due to lack of sleep and the sudden phobia that has developed in me! His cell number got recorded in my call log *since his number was detectable, that kind of tells me it's not a serial rapist - but if it is, he must be superdumb!*. So after alot of thought, I texted him asking who it was and how he had obtained my phone number. I was being polite cos I really needed to handle this myself without having to drag the Police into this *not yet* and I desperately needed to know WHO it was. I got an immediate SMS reply saying that he badly wanted to talk to me and that he was going to ring me again in 2mins, and if I'd pick up the phone! He also said that 'it would be worth it', and left some kisses n hugs for me...in 'xo' form! To which I didn't reply. It was a lil creepy but for all I know it could be a friend playing pranks on me using another friend's cell. But what kind of sick and tasteless prank is that? I really don't have friends like that...friends who play stupid cellphone stalking games like that. So chances are, it isn't a friend. That leaves me even more freaked out. Ted Bundy images controlled my poor soul all through the night and I was imagining myself being hacked to death...lol! I know I'm a lil dramaish here but hey cellphone stalking is no joke. I strongly believe that invading someone's privacy and harassing them in this manner is a serious matter and an offense that needs to be charged with.
This morning I decided to take matters into my own hands, and dial the unknown caller's number to speak to him directly, find out who it is and ask him to stop the menace. He didn't pick up. Then I texted him saying it's best that I know who he is and how he got my number, or else I won't speak to him at all as he wanted me to. I haven't heard from him in the past 6 hours or so. Let's wait and see what he does next *perhaps tonight*. I just wonder how he found my cell number...that just baffles me cos my cell number is not public. And it has only been given to the closest people in my life, except for a new friend that I met recently. I'm just doubting if he gave it to someone else for the fun of it. I have already emailed him asking if he did that. He just replied to me saying NO he didn't!
Who would harass you on the phone like this...would it most likely be someone you already know? What would you do in a situation like this? What is the best way to handle an unknown stalker who calls you late in the night? How would you stop them from calling you without involving the Police and having to change your number etc? I want to handle this sensibly, and in a way that does not escalate the problem. I don't want to provoke unknown people, neither do I want to press charges without knowing who it is and whether there's any real danger from him *I'm sure the Police has more serious issues to work on*. The calls started coming only last night, so I'm gonna give it some time before I jump into rash conclusions and hasty decisions that I might regret later on. What say? Any tips or personal experiences shared, will be greatly appreciated.
PS: Sorry I haven't been around Blogville all that much lately. Have been extremely busy. Will come around when I do get some time. Thanks for understanding! And if I don't come around at all, then the Stalker scored a date with me, sadly for me!

ReplyDeleteI understand how irritating that can be. When that happens, I am often tempted to lose my temper and give the freak a sound hearing. That'll only escalate the problem, so I stop myself from doing such things. Well I found if you completely ignore such calls, chances are high they'll grow tired of it. And if the freak persists and proves to me he/she doesn't have a life, then I see to it they get charged for every call they make. I answer the phone, turn off the microphone and go back to sleep. There was one idiot, who kept disconnecting and calling back, in that case *sigh* i had to switch off my phone, i hate doing that!!! Grrrr...!!!

well no, i dont get many. but i got once. these days its very easy to get someones tel number. probably you would have shopped somewhere and filled some lucky coupon, where you would have given you number. or probably something of that sort.

I can completely understand hw irritating it must be. I had gone thru a similar experience where in the guy kept calling saying tht he wanted to make friends with me and tht he had seen me at some local station!! It was freaky and i still dunno who this person is!

Also, u can call ur service provider and activate the service of blocking unwanted callers, i m sure u can block the number he's calling from.
Its disgusting how ppl make such calls...this guy used to call me every single day at night and talk shit!!i remember how i lost my cool once and yelled really hard at him. But u knw wht i guess thts wht they enjoy doing, annoying u!
So i think the ignore treatment jus works fine, wht will he do if u dont answer the call.
But a word of caution, be alert when u r travelling alone, u never know such creeps, they might resort to things like following u and stuff. My intent is not to scare u, but i want u to be cautious and realise wht to do when things go out of hand.
keshi, the best thing is that u have already solved the problem by calling him back...which has given him the clue that u got his number...u can find out who this chap is by tracing back his number...i think u can do this thru the telephone office ( if u know somebody) or even the police..

If you want to totally ignore..put his no. on call restriction.If you wanna know who he is..just wait for a while till you figure out & if he seems harmless then you do not have to go to cops.

Well, in US there is a site, donotcall.gov where you can add a number to that and then that person cannot call you after that. There must be site where you are too.
ReplyDeleteOr you can call your service provider and ask them to block the call, giving them a complaint that the caller is harassing you.
But since it's just one day, I think you can wait it out another day. It's probably someone acting funny or weird and fizzle out. ( I truly hope ) And don't give him or his calls too much importance but picking up or responding ( since you have his number ). Curiosity might get u to, but avoid it totally. He'll get bored eventually.

Anyways now that you have made efforts in your own way to find out who he is and have not yet succeeded, I suggest henceforth jusst IGNORE. There is a very simple way to find out the id but I would not like to put it here in open space. I am sure you know that tele-serials like CSR or whatever the name is give criminals clues how to avoid detection.

hmmm I cant make assumptions like that unless the caller racially abuses me. However, I dun think this is based on racism. the guy sounded like a SL/Desi guy :)
Also Soul, it seems the racist attacks in Aus hv given a totally different picture abt Aus to those who live in India. It isnt that bad. I hv never faced racism in Aus. And we really cant judge a whole nation based on few morons' actions. Also, the media isnt helping much by only showing the sad side of things. The Aussie cops and the govt r really helping the Indian students right now and r planning to take action on the issue. I believe every country has racists, not just Australia.

these cell phone stalker guy must be a person ner by u...just look around when u get the call..because the people whom we know most must sometimes be playing pranks....but i know the shit they talk on phone and they should be ignored sweets...
similar case with my frnds cousin she was in her engg 1st year her parents were worried of this guy...so i helped them logging a complaint and the police got the guy ...he was a guy from near by area..who got th number from one of her frnd...
these guys dont have any other work trying to do such bad things...

2.just block him on the phone by service provider..
3.track him down and put him behind bars..

Keshi, hope it got sorted out.. I got a call like that once, and it freaked me out for a week..Then years later a pal told me that he had dared another pal to call me ( total stranger to me btw)...

when i went thru something like this 3 years back, I dint quite know how to deal with it. Figured its a silly college kid making the best of his pocket money + the free sms for students option.
ReplyDeleteI was too freaked out, so I called up a police station nearby and told them the matter, + gave the phone number of the stalker to them.
The next time he called up, I didn't pick up the call. Instead, gave him a call from the local PCO and told him that I've given a police complaint and that his phone's being tapped. And that he can look forward to visiting the jail in the weekend if he goes on with it. He never called again.
A few months back, I got a couple of sms es from another stalker + too many missed calls while I was driving. Though this time, I knew better. I called back at that number. It was a no reply. I kept dialling it, non stop, just the way the creep did. And now when I knew that this guy's enough intimidated and petrified himself, I thought of really giving him a dose of his own medicine. I called him up from a PCO again, and again n again. like a maniac.
And then he replies by sms that he just meant to play a prank.
My point: just freak them out, those freaks.
What I would do if something like this hapens again is:
1. call up the person.
a. if he picks it up, ask him in stern no nonsense and calm manner, who he is? you can't expect cowards like this to answer it, so you just tell them that you were planning to give a police complaint, so giving his name along would help. that's why.
b. if he doesn't pick up (which's the case 99% of the time) freak them out by calling them back.
2. In any case, dont reply by sms.
I hope he dint call you again!
These kinda people are cowards of the worst grade, i tell you.
They can be intimidated much more easily that what we would think.

well, just a couple of weeks back this guy calls me at 11 in the night and says harini? this is deepu. im all "who deepu? i dont know any deepu" and he goes "how could you forget me harini?? its me! dont u recognise me? im deepu!" and i disconnected the call.. ive been all freaked out ever since, but i dont have the num anymore and the police wont be of any help!
