Irritable Towel Syndrome
Alright put yourself in this situation. There's a great Sinhalese Baila musical show coming up in August...2 popular Sri Lankan singers named Bhatiya and Santush are coming to Sydney and they will be performing for us just for $25 per head. So we (a Sri Lankan group of friends) all plan to go cos we love to dance. And then a Bollywood dinner and dance cruise in the Sydney harbour is coming up too. It's in September and the tickets are $55 per head. My Indian friends are calling me for it and they just rang me to book tickets. Now I want to go for both as the prices of the tickets aren't too high and I enjoy both Sinhalese and Hindi music, and ofcourse dancing. But my sister suddenly drops a bomb on me...she goes "we can't waste money on both, we can only go for one..I have to think". HELLO waste?? Who's wasting money here? I don't call going to an exciting musical show that we will most probably enjoy a waste. And neither do I think $25 + $55 is a big amount for 2 shows cos usually the concerts/dinners/shows we go to cost more than that. How can you judge the quality of a show to be a waste without really being there in the first place? I don't know what got into my sister's head suddenly cos I really don't think saving either $25 or $55 would put someone in a position to buy a Ferrari or a castle tomorrow (rolling eyes here)! Also, they are both shows that we are really going to enjoy and they don't take place every year either. This reminded me that once I booked for Lion King at the Sydney Capitol theatre and tickets were like $120 each, and then my sister backed off. So I had to cancel that too. Sounds like I suffer from Throwing In The Towel disease ha? Giving up each time accepting Defeat, when it's not even a case of Defeat. So hang on a sec. What would you do in this kind of situation? This time I'd go without her. Cos I can't wait all my life for people to agree with my likes and dislikes, and neither are they gonna wait for me - they always have it their way. I'm always in some function that someone else wanted to go to or I'm always doing something for someone else. So for a change, I'm gonna retain my self-pride. This time I wanna do it my way and I will go for both shows.
City Of Brides
To calm myself down, I will put up some pics of Sri Lankan Sinhalese (namely Kandyan-style) Brides. This is what I'd have to wear if I get married to a Sinhalese man - Buddhist that is (Hindu wedding gear is different). Whether I marry or not, I'd love to put this gear on and take few pics just for the heck of it :). That last pic is of a friend of mine from school. She's a famous model/actress in Sri Lanka now. It's not a wedding pic...it's a modelling pic of her in the traditional Sri Lankan Kandyan-style saree. I have worn it too as a friend's brides-maid few years ago - it was a Peacock blue saree and I had all the traditional jewellery on as well - it was sooo exciting to walk around feeling like royalty LOL! Enjoy the pics.
Today's music is an old, famous Baila song from Sri Lanka titled Yanna Rata Wate (means Going around the country). It's about Sri Lanka and it's natural beauty. This is one song I love to dance to. This music video shows some of the most beautiful places in Sri Lanka - the hills in Kandy, the Tea plantations, the waterfalls, beaches, temples, the ever famous Sigiriya, the stupas and the frescoes, the wild ponds where beautiful Lotuses grow etc etc. I love my motherland and I miss the place very much! I love Australia too but you can only feel at HOME when you're in your motherland. Strange ha. Don't forget to check out the video to have a look at where I come from. La la la la la laa la la la lala laaa! Come dance with me :).

Hi Dancing Queen
Was that the song you were dancing to in your pj's in the morning?
Wow! I loved the video!
I'd love to visit your country Sri Lanka....a beautiful place!
You must miss it soooo much!
When were you there last?
I think you should most defintely go to both shows....I can imagine they will be wonderful!
Too bad your sister does not want to see the two of them.
It would not be a waste of money to me!
I loved seeing the beautiful pics of the brides in their wedding wear.
So very elegant!
Your friend is very lovely!
Have you known her a long time?
Well, I have to get to bed soon!
Hope you are having a good day.
I have to say mine has been almost perfect....
Nitey nite my dear friend!
HUGGGGGGGGGGGGZ!
Margie:)
Hi Keshi
Nice post. Go to both shows. Life's too short. Compared to one's life, money is nothing.
Just to update you on our loss: Cause of death is drowning. There are doubts about a certain party involvement. Suicide is the likely the manner of death, but homicide may still be added into the equation.
Bev
GREAT OPOST AM CALLING 911!

Beautiful Keshi, really beautiful! Ohh i am not talking about the music video here (SriLanka has been on my places to go for some time now), I am talking about how lovely you'd look in the saree!

Gorgeous wedding dresses! I remember on a trip to Bangalore my friends and I went to a store to have saris made. While choosing fabric and design, I saw a picture of a dress but the lady told me it was only made for weddings and that it wold take more than two days to have something like that made. I was disappointed cause it was really beautiful.
About the show, I'd go to both and if my sister didn't want to come along, i'd go without her. :D
I love that last pic and the sinhalese way of wearing saree...reminds me somebody...:P

i enjoyed ur post. i didn know sinhalese indians are specifically buddhists and i loved the elegant and exotic costumes. do you know how to do classical indian dance? i find that breathtakingly beautiful. i watched the kamal hassan film where he really expended on the techniques and feel of dance.
Oh, I can just imagine you in that splendid attire. You'll be a knock-out bride, Keshi!
What a great song! (No I couldn't understand a word of it, but I still liked it and the vid)
If you want to go to both concerts and can afford it, then GO FOR IT!! Your sister can stay home, don't let her hold you back. Although it would be great if she would come too!
LOL Margie Im always dancing...even in the lift, Ladies', shops, while driving, traffic lights, crossing, shower, bed etc etc :):)
I left SL long long time ago...:( Time for me to visit it again.

Bev first of all big HUGGGGGGGGGGZ!
Im so sorry for ur loss...words cant express how I feel. Its so very sad losing a friend and in that manner. Its really heart-breaking. I've been there too...one of my good friends DAN committed suicide...n he was only 24. I wrote abt him too. Whenever I think of him I realise how SHORT life can be...
**Life's too short. Compared to one's life, money is nothing.
yes...thats exactly what I told my sis this morning by email (when she said she'd hv to think abt the shows). Im not trying to overuse that 'Life is short' term but its so true isnt it. I mean look at ur friend's life...look at my dad's life..look at Dan's life...I wonder of they ever hesitated going to a show or do something FUN...I hope not.
ty for ur advice on this. I appreciate it Bev. I hope u and ur friend's family find out what exactly happened to him and that you receive closure.

Keshi.
You go to both shows Keshi. If your sister does not want to go to one and you pressure her, she may become resentful. Likewise you may towards her if you miss a great night out.
Those gowns/dresses are exquisite. I'd like to see you in one as well.
I like this post.
***Cos I can't wait all my life for people to agree with my likes and dislikes, and neither are they gonna wait for me - they always have it their way.
Agree. I say go for two shows. If not ya sista than perhaps a friend. The tickets are realll cheap. And its like what you say, they don't come by everytime. Go for both and enjoy yaself to the max i would say.;)
Interesting exploration to your culture and country there. I would definitely love to see a pic of you in that outfit.:)I like the second gold one. Pretty nice. Interesting outfit i would say..:)
Have a good day Keshi.
Cheers!

Go to both!! Music is never a waste and if ur sis doesn't want to go with you then u have others who do :)
The pics are GORGEOUS - I can't wait to see pics of you in them :P
I once heard Baila music at a friend's party - it was some song about "I don't know why" which made me laugh so much. It had a great cheery tune and made me want to dance tho lol.
i'd skip the sinhalese show. [i dont et a word of it, thats the only reason why, aggressive Keshi :D]
anyways, i identify with that feeling of 'For once, I'ma do it for me'.. Keep that up, seriously.
Saree makes all subcontinent girls look smokin'! *drools*
Go! Go! Go! Just Go! Don't miss the boat just because your sis reckoned it is too expensive.
I'll go with you if I happen to be there coz I simply enjoy bollywood dancing :D So fun!

And regarding the other post.. dad is totally fine now.. Just that we are very careful about him :)
Aaawww, Keshi, I always have people bailing on me, too. I spent a better part of my twenties going to events alone because everyone else bailed. I like sharing experiences with others, but sometimes I just want to experience it and not say "I should have just gone anyway." ; ) If I were there I would venture with you!
eww if she is a famous actress, i think u can be the same, keshi-chan!!
that is a really elegant :)
and im amazed by that pic of SL!
la la la la laaa :) nice place to visit n beautiful locales
n btw nice pics too.
dont miss either of the shows.it wud keep u in good spirits.
something you like to go.. you should go. Many of the times I am constrained not to move around because lack of car. Even at home once dad said not to go for hiking.. when i badly wanted to go.. infact it was my idea to go there!.. last minute back off.. After that i never told where i am going.. i go and then tell!..
Nice pics of wedding.. when is yours going to be?..
Hi,Keshi..ur anger is quite understandable..Very frankly,I think,in such situations, one has to do what one's instinct tells one..not wait for others to make a decision for us...so,if sis thinks the show's a waste,go with those who think that it'll be worth every cent or more. And, nice wedding pics.Tks for the info.Cheers.
pretty girl .. or was it pretty dress
oh keshi, beautiful! And I would like to see u in a traditional Kandyan attire. Looks majestic.
And please do enjoy, dont care about people unless it's really nesacary, of because you are Keshi, btw, you can talk nicely to her and take her with you! Or tell her the ghost will get her. :D muahahahah! I used to back down from stuff coz I hate to see the pretenders there, but then good music, good programs are rare, especially the ones of our culture. So dance baby, dance like there is no tomorrow! wohoooo!
No Waste Girl!
Go to BOTH!!!
hey there...you should probably tell your sister that money's not important when you do the things you like...
hope you enjoy the shows...
-Rama.
hello! I ended up spending 10 hours at the hospital last night:(
Hi Keshi
Thanks for your comments on my blog.
If you enlarge the pic on the 2nd. last post, you will wonder like anyone else why some one who is a diver and a very strong swimmer, would choose water when wanting to take his own life.
This is just one of several mysterious facts about this case.
Nothing adds up. 2+2 does not = 5.
Weird?
Bev
Lovely post Keshi
HUGS
Definitely not a waste!!
Any amount of moner spent on music,phone-calls,books and art materials and high heels (of course!) Is definitely not a waste in my books!
Lovely pictures--Lively Video--Gorgeuos friend :-)
Thanks for sharing!
I'll go tot he shows with you!! I haven't heard any Sinhalese music but I love Bollywood. Bhangra dude!!!
You'd look hot in those wedding dresses. So when you getting married, anyway??? Just like "My Big Fat Sinhalese Wedding!!!"

so we do things together and things on our own.

SECONDLY... very pretttyyy.
The outfit in the photo is georgeous. Shouldnt get that excited as a guy:)
I have no idea i how much i have spent on concerts over the years, last week it was $270 for manson (x2)and machine head! I love live shows, i am sure i am just on a random shit mailing list. People just go hey random event who will go, ummm AIdan... So i go to student theatre, musicals, metal concerts, art galleries, exhibitions of body parts. I like adventures.
I option is just go with out her you will find like minded people once you get there, she would only be a wet blanket if she doesnt want to go.
You are not responcible for the short comings or faults of others

Very pretty bridal dresses! Especially those puffed sleeves, I remembered all my dresses had puffed sleeves when I was really young, it was as if the dressmakers were determined to hide our stick-thin arms ;o
Would love to see in you one of those!
**and you pressure her, she may become resentful. Likewise you may towards her if you miss a great night out.

**Why can’t u have ur picture of ur own with this bride suite or should we wait till ur wedding?

I will put up those pics some other day. So yeah, only the ppl of High castes wear this. Thats why it's called the Kandyan style...cos Kandyan ppl (caste descending from Kandy) is the highest of castes in SL. Im not bragging here but my dad is from Kandy.
I'd tell my sis wut u said. LOL!

Excerpts from 'Vests' Published Memoirs.
HMS King George V 1944.Our next port of call down the Sea was Aden. Located at the bottom of the Arabian peninsular, Aden was another place that would qualify as ‘the rear end of the world.’ We then sailed across the Indian Ocean to exotic Ceylon (or Sri Lanka) visiting Colombo where we had shore leave. I was now enjoying a beer due to the warmer climate, but the ‘beer’ was nothing more than awful ‘sludge,’ which was its nickname.
Later on, we sailed for the beautiful harbour of Trincomalee, north of Ceylon. Although full of warships, Sober Island was an escape into the jungle for me. Every opportunity I had, I would go exploring. This was something I thoroughly enjoyed. I was then eighteen-and-a-half years old. In later years, I again visited Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), it is really, a very beautiful place.
Christmas in Trincomalee was great, with plenty of sporting activities. I played one game of soccer; but the climate was more suited to swimming. I also played cricket with a team that lost. I had to retire hurt, after I hit a ball that was well placed to the boundary with my bare left hand. Another day I being unable to play, I agreed to umpire a game. One cocky person, who had scored far too many runs and was likely not to give anyone else a chance to bat, was well forward when I gave him out; leg before wicket to a ball missing leg stump. He told me I should wear glasses. I told him he was probably right. (The mystic rules of the game of Cricket leave most people stumped)
We were now on our way down to Fremantle in Western Australia. We had left Sumatra, where we and other ships (mainly aircraft carriers) gave the Japanese a fair wallop. We had lost many planes and crewmembers during the bombing of the last oil fields the Japanese relied on. Strangely, when the first Jap plane passed on our port side, our wavy Navy Air Defence Officer ordered, “Port armament Dummy Run Aircraft Port.” When the situation had been corrected, we managed to shoot down one of our own fighter planes. Many other tragedies occurred during these actions. Nine of our fleet air-arm pilots (who weren’t recovered) and all those who were shot down or bailed out over Japanese occupied territory (all between the ages of nineteen and twenty-two) were later beheaded by the Japanese in Singapore.
On the way to Fremantle, Western Australia, we had to wait for oilers (tankers) to refuel. There was nothing to get excited about in Fremantle, as we only stayed for one day. My watch duty kept me on board. On Saturday, 10 February 1945, we arrived in Sydney. My life would soon change.
HMS Scarborough, 1960.Most mornings while berthed alongside in Karachi, I would be off to the consulate with the ship’s official mail, having taken over the duties of postman for the ship. A car and a driver were provided for this purpose. On my first visit, I was told that I could get an exchange rate of 17.5 rupees to the pound, which was higher than the bank exchange rate of 13.5. (You could get up to 15 rupees to the pound on the street, but you were punished if caught.) My shipmates agreed that my rate of 16 rupees to the pound was okay, so I regularly turned up at the consulate with a stack of cash. I often wondered what the ceiling exchange rate was. I do recall my total income from these nefarious transactions equalled about three month’s salary. We dubbed it “The Karachi Shuffle.”
At Karachi, Pakistan, I saw the Pakistani Naval Ship ‘Babur.’ After further scrutiny, I discovered it was my old ship, HMS Diadem, where I had spent three months in 1947.
Our ship also visited Colombo and Trincomalee in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) where I did more exploring and thoroughly enjoyed myself, Sri Lanka is such a beautiful place. We then went on to Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, the Maldives,Ceylon, Mauritius, the Seychelles, the Persian Gulf, Kuwait, Aden, Dar es Salaam in Tanganyika, (now Tanzania) and the Island of Zanzibar.
Later in 1960.returning to Uk via the suez canal.
While on our journey West the ship called into Trincomalee, Beautiful Sri Lanka. I was so pleased to be able to visit Sober Island again. On one of my visits, I was investigating some movement around the rocks near the shore when I saw a large eel. I chased it with a sharp pointed stick and eventually speared it. I took it back to the ship in our boat. One of the Chinese laundry men on the ship asked, “You catch it?”
I replied, “Yes.”
“You bloody stupid?” he asked loudly.
“Why?” I said.
He replied, “Not eel. It is deadly sea snake.” The ‘eel’ was a bright black and yellow.
“Being an uninformed survivor, I have escaped posthumous wisdom once more,” I replied.
He shook his head and said, “Not understand.”
“Me neither,” I said.
The highlight of our visit to Trincomalee was the bus trip to Diatalawa near Neuralia, where we stayed to enjoy seven days rest and recreation at the former signal station a few thousand feet above sea level. I thoroughly enjoyed the countryside which was so lush and green; cool and beautiful. I walked to Flying Fox Valley escorted by two of the local children, one of whom threw a stick into a tree; disturbing a swarm of bees. I being wise about such things, I ran quite some distance waving a bunch of twigs warding off the stings of the bees, it reminded me of a well oiled comic book scene. However, it was one more wonderful experience to add to my many visits to beautiful Ceylon (Sri Lanka).
Our last visit; hopefully not the last.
Sri Lanka 2000
We travelled to Sri Lanka formerly Ceylon, on Sri Lankan Airlines (which is still a beautiful country). This was an eleven-hour journey, half of which was from Sydney to exit Australia via Port Hedland in Western Australia. We then flew over Indonesia ‘Sumatra’ and passed over Palembang, the scene of the British pacific fleet’s many forays against the Japanese during WW2 where many lives were lost. Flying over that area again gave me an eerie feeling.
I would like to mention that the service we received on Sri Lankan Airlines was superior, and I would not hesitate to fly with them again, they are such delightful people
When we arrived in Colombo (where a general election was imminent), we travelled forty minutes on an ancient, non air-conditioned bus with non-existent shock absorbers to the Pegasus hotel. During this pile-bashing journey, we noticed a large military presence and were advised not to go into Colombo due to the possibility of riots. The air-conditioned hotel was old but clean and presentable. Mary won two bottles of spirits in a hotel raffle, which inspired me to sing a few songs with the hotel band. All in all, it was a very pleasant stay.
Mary and I walked around the local village close to a slow moving river that appeared to be more mud than water. We spoke to some of the local people and watched the local boys play an improvised game of cricket on the dirt road. I was tempted to have a knock with the bat, but because of their expertise, I politely declined their offer when they asked me.
During our journey back to the airport to catch our plane to Gatwick, London, we rode the same tired old bus as before and were stopped no less than a dozen times for security checks. When we arrived in London, I heard that Mrs Bandaranaike, the wife of a former prime minister of Sri Lanka (who was assassinated on 25 September 1959 by a Buddhist monk), had died the day we left, after the election her son had contested.
FINI.
