Granny Craig

I had to write this post cos someone I love is rapidly disappearing into thin air because of a so-called 'healthy' diet (which ofcourse I think is a certified path to Anorexia). La Vida Loca's fantastic recent post about unhealthy diets reminded me of this girl I know. I'm not writing this to make her feel bad or to laugh at her. Trust me I love her and she's very close to me. And I don't wanna see her sick cos of some diet that don't make her beautiful anyways. That's why I want you to read her story so that if you're in the same track you'd realise that it's not really a fashion statement that you're making - rather a big blunder. (I have written a similar post long time ago - check 'butt it's beautiful'). My sincere apologies in advance if I hurt anyone through this post, but this is how I truly feel about extreme and crash-dieters.

She used to be a normal size 12 (perhaps a size 14 I'm not sure) and she used to eat without feeling guilty. She used to be happy, carefree and she looked fresh and healthy. And then came along some weirdo who told her she looked 'big' and that changed her life, for the worse I think. She immediately went and
joined Jenny Craig's weight-watchers' program (which I have heard is ok to a certain limit). And in the months that followed she not only punished herself with tasteless fish-food but also went and bought a whole gym spending alot of money. Her house is full of gym equipment now. She followed Jenny Craig religiously for 10 more months combined with rigorous exercise. As a result she really lost tons of weight. At the beginning she looked good...more firm and healthy than she was before. She came to a size 10 which was great. I think this is where she should have stopped it and taken up natural ways to maintain it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that weight-watchers programs are bad altogether. It may be good until you lose the excess weight and then you have to be sensible enough to stop it there and continue with natural ways of maintaining that weight. But she didn't ease up on the diet after that, instead she continued like a Jenny-Craig-produced-low-fat-maniac and deteriorated rapidly by the day. Her face dropped, her eyes and cheeks hollowed, her very visible rib cage could be easily studied by anyone, her excessive skin started to hang from under her arms and worst of all she feared normal food! Whenever we ate rice/pasta (carb foods) in front of her she completely freaked out. Her tasty home-cooking also stopped cos now she survived only on program-supplied pre-packed food. She's a woman in her late 20s and she was now a size 8 going on size 6! Girls now when you're a full-grown adult woman (women of 25 and up), you really don't want to look like an under-developed teenager do you? You should be healthy, full and natural. That to me is attractive than a bag of bones moving around. And when you're an adult woman surely it isn't a fashion to look like a hungry Ethiopian who hasn't eaten in yonks?? She even mocked me for being a size 10-12 (trust me I fluctuate between the 2 sizes). I didn't mind her laughing at me cos I know what Im doing whereas she doesn't seem to have a clue about the damage she's doing to herself. She is lost in some craze to look like a walking-stick that isn't sexy anyways. And I think she is partly frustrated that she is obsessed by this diet and that she couldn't be normal anymore. That's why she was mocking those who ate normal food and didn't mind having sugar in their coffee. She takes Equal (saccharine-coated sweetener) with her tea/coffee. I read that artificial sweeteners such as Equal causes Cancer in long term use. I received a recent pic of her yesterday (no that's not her in this pic - she hasn't come to that stage yet but is surely on her way to it!) and she looked like a size 5 or even a 4! Is there even a size like that except for infants?? I don't know but she looked really sick. Both her cheeks seemed hollow and she looked extremely tired. Seriously clothes look better on a 'woman' than on a 'hanger' don't they! She didn't look like a fresh young woman anymore - instead she looked like a granny who's madly running after Jenny.

I can't advise her anymore cos last time I advised her she said I was jealous of her...helllo jealous? Hell na I'm not jealous. How could I be jealous of a woman who has no flesh in her body? I'd have to be a bone-specialist to admire her. Guys you tell me...do you prefer flesh-less and skin-only women or fleshy, healthy and bubbly women like Uttsy and Beyonce? :) Anyways I told her to beware of Anorexia and she didn't even know about such a thing - how ignorant can people be. Still she's not stopping on the diet. All of this to look like some 100yr old skeletal remains? WHY?

I really can't understand why some women fail to realise that their bodies are unique and beautiful as they are. I think most women punish their bodies cos the body is easier to change than the attitude towards yourself. If you have an over-weight problem then go and get some healthy advice from your doc and follow simple and genuinely healthy rules. Perhaps cut-down on certain sugary and oily food, let go of some unhealthy habits and exercise regularly - but never overdo anything. Everything in life should be done in 'moderation'. If you are so obsessed with looking thin to the extent that you miss out on having fun and having a life, then certainly you're on the wrong track. We were not born into this world to starve - we were born to live, eat and enjoy life. If you stand in front of the mirror and you have to try real hard to find your image, then you are in for some serious trouble. Life is too short to breathe weight-watchers and live on crackers. What matters most is if you are happy, sensible and healthy. I'm sure those who diet like this aren't really happy but they are forcing themselves to do it just to be thin and look like a model/actress who needs a good serving of steak on any day. A woman is beautiful when she's beautiful both in and out. To me outward beauty means being curvy, healthy, fresh and natural. And also if she's just beautiful on the outside and cant carry a decent and intelligent conversation (due to cranium depravation cos of hunger) and without fainting out of starvation, then what's the point in looking thin, thinner and thinnest? Where are all the full-figured beauties these days (like Sophia and Marilyn)? By crash-dieting you are putting yourself at serious risk and depriving your body of the nutrients it needs to function properly. I have heard of people dying from crash-dieting/binge-eating and some people end up as miserable anorexics/bulimics in mental hospitals. Don't ever let a diet ruin your life - you get only one life, so protect it. I hope my friend realises this before it's too late. Exercise your soul, do everything in moderation, be well and stay happy people.

Its very easy to let men rule the perception of ourselves...culture doenst help either.
I know so many anorexics around me in India, its unbelievable. I know people that routinely get admitted to the hospital for "weakness" because they have absolutely stopped eating. Cuz of course no one here follows a healthy diet and exercise.. they just dont eat.

Those pics. you posted are scary!
It is sad when someone is trying so desperately to lose weight they
do not even care about what long-term damage they might do to themselves in the end.

I have a friend that is always on a diet... she never seems to be happy!
I told her if she ate more... she would not be so grumpy!
But, she wants to be skinny in such a bad way... she will not listen to me.

I have never been on a diet!
I would hate to always be thinking about what I could and could not eat!
I like to eat, but I eat in moderation!

I do like to be healthy though...
and do work out!
It makes me feel good to take care of my body!
I think I am the right weight for my height!

Luckily I have never had a weight
problem... I think it is just good genes as noone in my family has ever been overweight!

A very good message Keshi!
Thanks for it!
You always have the best posts!

Hey Keshi...wonderful post...best part is you've weaved in alot of funny lives....to put your message across.

I have seen some real wierd cases of crash -dieting on Oprah...gurlz are crazy or what ??

I never ever believe in dieting...the best is to control & keep a check on your intake of sugar, greasy stuff & exercise regularly to have a fit mind & body....

& the pic you have inserted of a girl with her rib-cage almost out of her body is really scary ....

Hope your friend understands your sincere advice ....

I've never dieted - because I love food too much lol, but my aim is more exercise to TONE not lose weight (if some happens to fall off - yay!). The butt that I hate, everyone envies- Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - as long as we are healthy - why does it matter how we look???

And the second pic sure look scary KEshi..Gosh !! I really wonder why people think Skinny is PRetty. That picture looks so awful and its like she is sick and right i do agree on that ethopian expression you mentioned somewhere in ya post.

And also i prefer MEAT than Bones. I don't fancy being skinny. i like meat on me. and of course men too. i feel its looks more fuller...i dun know thats wat i think. and healthier for sure..hahaha. lest of excess meat though...

Beautiful post! i heard of how they have websites that encourages girls to starve . They actually created anoxeric webbies to encourage girls to be skin and bones. And it seems that its a sort of propaganda..Not sure abt that though. i like this post its real and affirming tht meat is beautiful and can be beautiful and will be beautiful especially when well balanced.

Cheers! was looking forward to a new post in ya blog. And You did a great one up!

I am glad you took on this topic. I posted about a year ago on how fashions are being tailored to the waif thin and flat-chested or the waif thin and artificially enhanced. It's rare that I could find a dressy summer blouse or halter top that was functional for a normal woman, who is a natural C cup or higher.

It's about time fashion was made for real women!! They should put you and me in the fashion shows!

Hmmmm..Kesh I am not tall, a modest 5'2.5 inches, I make sure I had that .5 :-)Anyways I fluctuate between 8-10 more towards 8.
Reason I mention all this is, somedays I find myself worrying about what I eat 'coz I know with my tiny frame if I put on weight I will look short and stout. But thats where it ends. I can enjoy a meal, indulge in icecream,a packet of crisps and everything.
But I know that there is a thin line between worrying and obsessing and I bor anyone really could easily be on your friend's side.
But like you said everything needs to be in moderation, anything in excess does only harm.
I hope your friend understands your concern and appreciates it

Anycaase now shes got hazar health problems. It so much wiser to exercise & loose those extra kilos rather than crash diet! Food is just too yummy & insisted of rejoicing it resisting it is sick! Life is short so enjoy as much while it lasts.

Good post. Some overdo it. I hope it works out for her. As someone on a diet ( i don't need to be on one) I can see where you are coming from. All I am trying to do is push down my body fat to as low as I can and combined with the home gym get to being in decent shape. I think it finally shows now at least acc to *A*. lol.

i agree keshi, girls sometimes take it to extreme levels thinking its going to make them look good. I for one have always been a thin but healthy kid and i tried so many different things to gain weight....even tried eating brinjal for a whole month, nothing else and brinjal was something i used to hated!

Anyways now that i have put on weight naturally am very happy. Now i feel whole, and best part i dont have to answer questions like - r u sick? u r so thin anything wrong? etc etc. phew! quite a relief!

Now the only thing is i need to exercise and stay fit not reduce! :) Hope ur friend realises she's not gaining anything by loosing too much wait. getting back to a healthy state is kindof difficult after loosing so much.

Hard-hitting post, Kesh, nicely done. It actually hurt to look at that 2nd picture especially, though the 1st isn't much better, it was slightly more covered up.

This is such a scary and sad issue, and things seem to be going from bad to worse - esp. recently it seems to be escalating.

Moreover along with women getting smaller and smaller, men are getting larger and larger - two sides of the self same coin. As said, very scary.

I feel deeply for your friend, I have such friends too and know it hurts to see them consciously choosing to cause themselves harm in this way. Hope she realizes that there is such a thing as too thin well before she makes herself ill.

Worst thing about it is (for us, those witnessing, I mean!), is that there is little or nothing we can say or do.

This is a very enlightening post. It is sad that people in the fashion industry promote this thinness. even girls as young as 8 or 9 are worried about getting fat. I think its good to promote good health and I teach my children that, but inever tell them you have to be thin to look beautiful.I think anorexia is an emotional disease and people like your friend needs some emotional help first , so that she can love who she is.

Hey good post. This really breaks my heart.I hate when the diet demons ask if you are jealous of their weight loss.I had 2 room mates-1.was a healthy gal..went to a demonic diet and another pretty much refuses to eat.All the body abuse was too much to take.Unfortunately I got sucked into the body abuse vortex but wound up gaining weight :(
No more diets for me and I refuse to listen to "I hate my body" rants.
You brought up some good points.Hugs :)

There is nothing wrong with dieting, and trying to be slim. It is just sad when things get out of perspective - and balance is lost. My own daughter was diagnosed as being pre-anorexic when she was only 9 years old. She is fine today (she is now 30) thank goodness because of treatment she received at that tender age.

Very good post Keshi.

I remember being carefree and not conscious about my body until my close friends started commenting on my weight.Yes,I am on the excessive side but they haven't helped me in any way. They are interested in joining me in the gym or eating with me.So the only thing the comments keep doing to people like me is make us depressed.
You have broached upon a topic that is so sensitive among us girls yet at the same time something has to be done to make women understand that they need to eat a balanced diet to be fit and healthy.

>>Everything in life should be done in 'moderation' <<
Amen. It is hard to know the limits sometimes.. but in certain cases.. like here...if your body feels bad, it probably aint good to do something.

Your friend will probably hate you.. but somebody has to tell her... even if harshly.. sometimes i think the facts need to acknowledged by someone "as is", instead of sugar coating.. It need not come to that.. but sometimes it has to...infact the person might be expecting someone to do that.. [we are crazy sometimes:), aren't we?]

Some like some things in certain ways and most of the times something else will compensate for what is lacking...Sooner or later everyone realizes: "its not all that important"... Its true isn't it?
SO, I wonder if the guy who told her that she is "BIG" is taking notice now.. if so he should have realized the plight she is in now... I wonder if he told her "that is enough"... I wonder if she is now unstoppable.. BIG..well.. HUGE.. may be bad... but obsessing over "thin" and "thinner" and "thinner still" cant be good either...

It is just that one word again: "moderation!!"

u can be my chela

i will teach u the facts of life

fact 1
never loose your cool
when an old man makes a pass for u
REJOICE
old men have seen plenty girls
and if u make his head turn
u gott something very special in u

fact 2 and 3
u dont need to diet
eat healthy
wear no make up
as some girls like KESHI do

dont change your lip colour or the color of your hair
dont go for breast enhancement
u will only attract mamas boys
who still yearn for breast feeding

remember GOD made u
u cant improve on GOD's work

if u try
u might end up looking like poor MICHAEL JACKSON

Hi Keshi...

I could not stand to look at those pix, they sure made a very powerful post hit home, hard.

Your rationale is all very sound.

Luckily, I've never had a weight problem, just my body type. Others do, it's genetics and lifestyle.

I'm sure it's easy for someone WITHOUT a weight problem to not be able to understand why other people DO.

But women who start believing they have a weight problem when they don't...and then kill themselves over it...it's out of this world.

--------------------------

Margie ur right...body weight should balance with a person's height. Alot of ppl forget that and go to extremes - I think it's plain stupidity.

lol that verse on food was cute, ty! I so eat alot when Im stressed :( Not like a pig but more than usual.

Choc cake OMG I luv em! email me apiece will ya Marg? ;-)

-------------------------

Mehak yes moderation is imp. The first 2 pics r from an Anorexia website and they r real pics of real patients. And to imagine that first girl thinks she's beautiful and walking on the ramp?? Who put her there!!!!!!!!

My friend wont get it. She now shops in Childrens' shops!

-------------------------

Silvara u must look really beautiful. A real woman. Dun let anyone tell u otherwise. ppl who have no figure r jealous of girls like u so they tell u ur big etc. An hourglass figure is SEXXXXXY!
;-)

-------------------------

Southy I know u like the bootylicious ones :)

yes those 2 anorexics r scary and the fact that the first girl dun seem to realise that is even more scary!

-------------------------

Kautilya ur right...pleasantly plumpy is so in now!!

-------------------------

Steph ur spot on! It's the fashion industry and weight-loss industry that have to answer to this. Some women even dunno that Jenny Craig and the likes use extremely yukky artifical crap in their pre-packed food to make it taste like normal meals! I read that from a girl who tried their program. She said that all of JC's foods consisted crap like that that r harmful to oen's body. How else wud they get the cheese to taste like real cheese and the sweet to taste like real sugar!! Use ur heads girls.

tnxx Steph for bringing that great point in!

Coolvir ur extremely lucky! :) Good on ya!

Kalpana tnxxxx!

---------------------------

Amy thats right...maintain ur body weight so that u dun go over or under. Its not that hard if ppl stick to healthy food and exercise regularly. Alot of ppl think they cant do it so they crash diet and then they get sick. And when they stop the diet they put back all the weight on!

** heard of how they have websites that encourages girls to starve .

yes I have seen such a documentary on TV. How these sites teach young girls to starve and bring their bones to display. It's plain wrong!

----------------------------

Uttsy u try telling my friend - right now she's deaf and she thinks Im ridiculously fat (yes she thinks that lol!) and that she's fat too - omg shes so not fat - she's a size 5 I think! Now how d u put some sense into someone like that?

btw she was just liek u and me b4 all this stupid diet. She was a sensible happy girl. And to imagine that something like this could happen to someone like her is shocking. Cos it means it can happen to any of us. Our mental state can be changed by almost anything. Obsession can happen and then there's no turning back. Thats why I wanted to write this so that it wont be too late for someone else too.

U dun have to diet at all. Just exercise and control on oily food etc. Go for daily walks - it really helps. I have put on a bit during Winter cos I didnt do much walking either. Now Summer's ard Im gonna go walking again from tonite. :) But I never diet (I dun pig out either). I love my food.

--------------------------

S0ulAsylum heyyy!

**also fit his/her wafer thin self sideways thru the pages of a book

LOL that had me laughing like crazy!

ur right girl..exercise is the key. I always beleived in that and it has always worked for me.

No she wont listen to me either. She thinks Im grossly fat and that she still has to lose alot of kilos...from where? LOL!

Keshi.

Keshi said...

m000nie yeah I too wish I could put some sense into her. I feel sorry for her cos she cant see beyond a vaporising body. D u know she wants to be thinner? Right now she's abt size 5!

-------------------------

Phoenix ur right. But I guess wisdom is hard to come by if brain doesnt get enough nutrients :) So yeah obviously these girls miss out on that!

--------------------------

Murane yep how can any man admire a woman who has no breasts/butt at all??

**But maybe it's easy to say, not knowing why someone is getting kind of addict.

true. I know that. I mean some ppl r genetically prone to Anorexia and we cant really blame them. But most women trigger the illness cos of their madness to look like someone else. And thats stupid.

-------------------------

Pallavi yeah I know one girl here in Aus who was so pretty...and then she was obsessed with soem diet and u should have seen how she changed over few months. From beauty to beast. It was SCARY. Her story came in the papers too. Eventually she died and she was only 21!

--------------------------

Saffy hey yes there r naturally small-boned girls...but they r ok cos that's their natural Body Mass Index.

---------------------------

Visithra tnxx!

And yeah there's nothing wrong in dieting sensibly. For health's sake. Cos there r ppl who seriously need to lose weight. But those who overdo it r crazy. I see alot of anorexic girls here walkign ard thinking they look GREAT! Today I saw abt 5 such girls and I was like 'girl I do feel for ya' in my head!

--------------------------

--------------------------

Saby my mum always says that the old actresses r the most beautiful girls she has seen. My mum laughs at the skinny sticks that appear in movies these days LOL!

**like Sophia Loren and Liz Taylor and Gina Lollobrigida

true! They r REAL women.

true and that factor can be a killer for some women.

------------------------

Ashley u go girl! :) U r so right.

**It's rare that I could find a dressy summer blouse or halter top that was functional for a normal woman, who is a natural C cup or higher.

so true. D u know that Aus has some shops where clothes look like they r for adolescent girls but they r really for women like us! I cant believe that. When I walk into such shops the biggest size they may have is size 8. Just what is that?

My friend wont get it. I have told her everything possible. I try not to laugh at her cos that wud be mean. But she thinks Im the one who needs help LOL! She goes to parties and u should see her plate she she serves...it looks like leftovers already.

------------------------

Ammuuuu mwahhhhh I missed u! Wut have ya been upto?

ofcourse when sexy Amu is ard why do we need Marilyn-look-alikes! :)

**. your fren is another case of mis-understanding of the concept of nutrition.

so true. And since u know abt nutrition alot, can u tell us how wud this affect the brain's functioning? I mean crash-dieting and it's effects on the brain.

---------------------------

Fleiger rem u wanted to see a ghost? I made ur wish come true lol!

Madhu thats great. Im happy for ya :)

Brinjal/Eggplant makes one fat?

**best part i dont have to answer questions like - r u sick? u r so thin anything wrong etc.

OMG every person who sees my friend asks her if she's ill! So u can imagine what Im talking abt.

**getting back to a healthy state is kindof difficult after loosing so much.

thats soooo true! My mum always says that. Cos when teh body starts deteriorating w.o. enough nutrition, the damaged cells r hard to recover. I hope these girls get some brains!

--------------------------

Autumn ur spot on babez. Cos I feel bad not being able to do anything...just watching her disappearing is shocking and it hurts. When I saw her pic the other day I really cried.

Starry u raised a very good point.

**I think anorexia is an emotional disease and people like your friend needs some emotional help first , so that she can love who she is.

It is an emotiona need thats being suppressed that leads to this. I always thought that. Cos if someone wants so much attention that they'd rick their lives to getting it, that means that person is emotionally unfed. My friend does have some personal issues I know. And Im sure this is her way of addressing it. I do feel for her. I really do. And I did speak to her abt it so many times. But instead of solving the first issue, she's now stuck on a deadly diet. I wonder where it'll all end!

--------------------------

Nelly arent they scary! But these girls still think that they are not thin enough - thats the scariest part!

true she needs counselling cos my words r not helping her. But she refuses to believe she's obsessed. btw Jenny refused her anymore of their food. What does that mean? She's on anorexic levels now.

to tone down 2 not luk in awkward shape if fine, n to work out to not be flabby too

some ppl r thin by nature, they dun put weight not matter how much they eat, to not eat to become slim is darn silly

its anyday better to eat well, *junk foods inclusive* and exercise to stay healthy

My first visit here and this post of urs forced me to write. Yes, the pics are scary & somewhat sickening. I fully agree with you. In fact, I thought of posting something on the same topic. Now, I won't :) You did the job.

More than advice, your friend needs treatment (both physical & mental). I am sorry to have used such strong words but that is the truth.

Just nutritious diet & a bit of exercise depending on one's body needs does wonders.

I have a beautiful shapely body & I would never want to change it, let the world call me old-fashioned.

Every thing is limit, if it crosses, it will spoil our health. If ur friend thought to stop her diet and live a healthy life she can do, but for those who are born thin with less flesh, I don’t know how will they get strong health.

There was a family near my house, the dad, mom, and the children looks very lean. Their children go on sick many times, and visit doctors. I have seen many people who have diabetes loss their weight. Even my doctor advice me to not to eat much sweet products, to avoid breathing problem in my future.

In Nigeria, thin lizzies would be sent to mental homes.

We have fattening homes for new brides, because we don't like thin women in Nigeria.

Levi Jeans just made "Eva" series for the extra-booty of African babes and ladies.

Voluptuous women are sexier and more enjoyable.

But personally, I prefer a woman who is neither thin nor fat. A woman built like Keshi.

G'day Mayur, thanks :)

--------------------------------

Scribblez heyy hows u girl?

**Know someone who had some harmonal change she suffered a lot after tht..

why d u hate food sweety? dun u ever get hungry?

--------------------------------

Schrodinger's_Cat WC n tnxxxx!

**The problem is that of comparison and paying too much attention to what others have to say

So true! that is the underlying issue that gets women to feel inferior and insecure. It's lack of self-confidence too.

--------------------------------

Viv yes...a balanced diet indeed. But for alot of girls these days, its a NO-diet. How sad. My friend dun eat anything normal...she even fears an occassional piece of cake!

this is what she wrote. And then, some newspapers came out saying how she should not say things like this, because many bad characters in her novels are bad etc etc. Caused a lot of controversy on this...

Keshi: Me on "diet" no way girl....

I think its basically the media and soceity hep. People do ened to grow up in others ways to think they have to improve their brains rather improve their hip size. Whazt is size 2 and 6. I feel that size is for kids when they grow up but not for women.

Ther r ppl' who go for small sizes and ther r ppl' who cannot wear such sizes but make it awkward simply to get attention.

As long ppl' know the side effects of dieting and eating pills, they will not think positive.

Keshi said...

Fleiger tnxxx for that..I read it. She's spot on! Wudnt u rather know a person who's witty, intelligent, sensible and smart than skinny?

** because many bad characters in her novels are bad

lol arent 'bad' characters suoosed to be 'bad'?

Priya ur right.

** Whazt is size 2 and 6. I feel that size is for kids when they grow up but not for women.

LOL yes whats with those sizes? I think it's plain UGLY for a grown-up woman to be of that size.

Sorry... typo there. It was supposed to be "Bad characters are fat". My bad...

Keshi said...

Fleiger heyyy!

**"Bad characters are fat"

are they? I mean I havent seen HP at all. Well maybe extra-fat, not just normal-fat. I have also seen very thin 'bad' characters in cartoons/movies.

Also have u seen Addams Family? What abt Lurch? He's lanky and pretty lean :) And Uncle fester is fat n wobbly lol! So yeah there r many fat/thin 'scary'/'bad' characters :):)

i just read ur post and it sure does strike a bell!!from personal experience,i have come a long way, from a size 16 to a good size 8-10,but luckily for me i knew where to stop....i feel only pity for ur friend, there is a limit to everything.she needs to pull up her socks and get things into perspective.
and believe u me,all is fine, but putting yourself through this torture and short cut end to ur life, just cos some self centered, ftv addict guy says ure big!!!thats just the worst thing.ure friend definately needs to get a life.
my god, those cakes and chocolates are there for u to enjoy, and u have just one life to eat them all:))
ps:those pics scared the hell out of me.
